see, i cbf with a manual in Sydney's peak hour traffic, as im using it every day to and from work, and the auto transmission is probably better at changing gears and not wrecking the car than i am :D

I've been driving stick for almost 14years now varying between 1.5-4hrs on road each day over the years. I feel empty driving an auto and even as a daily I feel safer behind the wheel of a manual car simply because I have more control. Each to their own I guess. But it's frustrating me now because I'm looking for a family 7 seater manual and I'm super limited on options. I can't get leather seats or standard tech or even the car that i want (Audi q7, Kia sorrento). Oh well. But as weekend car I'd definitely opt for manual.
Australians have lost the love for manual but it's still there in the UK.

@gezza90: I agree manual is safer than auto but not mostly because you have more control. I think it's safer because it's harder for you to get distracted.

It's so much harder to be texting, eating a burger or doing makeups while driving a manual car.

I seriously think if all cars on the road were manual, we'd have a lot fewer accidents.

  • My vote would be a Kia stinger GT. Massively underated car. Will be around that 50k range for a used one and should still have around 5 years warranty left. Relatively cheap to service. Interior is quite premium for a Kia and other cheap sports cars.

As a weekend car, I'd get a manual JDM car. They're good fun and likely to appreciate in value. Parts are also readily available.

    @lasolaso:

How long are you planning to keep the car for?

Looks like you have access to a second car. Depending on your circumstances, the car you choose may not need to be practical at all. Maybe take the chance while you can? A 4-door sporty sedan/hatch is something most people can fit in later on in their lives. Consider getting something more memorable for a bit.

Also, if this is a significant purchase for you and you still have any doubts remaining - you could look into renting the car (or similar) first to help you make your decision.

  • How about a lexus Is

  • Op, if you're gonna have a quarter life crisis get a motorbike. You'll go 10 times faster for 10 times cheaper and have 10 times of more fun.

I'm currently at the great alpine road and driving a renault megane rs 250 with semi slick tyres. Oh what a car! The handling is next level with some decent power to boot. If you want fun then consider this car. My mate who drives a late gen STI was quite blown away with the performance and thinks its more fun than his car.

You can get these hot things for 13k - 18k! A lot of car for the money.

  • you are already so much ahead in life than most of us lol, 26 married with mortguage, meaning already owns a house, and 95k a year, well shit..

    anyways:
look for a miata if you wana enjoy the drive with the roof down. fun little car
going down the list have a look at the golf r
than if you want something more beefy heavier will be in the realm of a mustang or kia stinger or current gen sti
hell you can even stretch the budget for an a45 amg, cla 45amg, audi s3. but be warned with the germans and expensive parts.

  • What's your objection to new if it's under budget?

    • Is that a serious question??

      • Yes, I've never bought new either but my budget has never been above $20k if my budget is up to $50k and there are $35k-$50k options that meet my needs then I would consider a new over a used car.

That's under the assumption that the OP is planning on keeping it for 5-10 years and I accept the depreciation of any car. If it's a drive and flip every couple of year thing then yeh second hand all the way.

        • I've never understood the mentality of being ok with buying new if keeping the car for a long time. Whether you keep the car for 2 years or 20 years, you are still $10k (at least) out of pocket when buying a new car vs say 2 year old car.

I'll go so far as to say anyone with a budget under $100k and an income under $250k shouldn't even look at new cars.

    • +1

my objection is that you can get a better deal buying second hand, clean low kms and save $

  • -1

Pretty sure if your take on it is "mustang, 370z or porsche cayman(2011ish)"

    1) You aren't actually into cars
    2) You just want something because it looks cool/status
    3) On finance meaning you can't really afford it

    Toyota/Subaru 86/BRZ.

  • what about the new supra?

    • +1

It's only double his budget. Good suggestion.

Also OP have your considered the Ferrari FXXK? Probably only 20x your budget, and very sporting.

      • +1

nah i would personally go with the Bugatti chrion super sport in all carbon fiber exposed interior, its only x1000 times his budget tho

If you want to join a cult following and car that will make you smile everytime, consider an Abarth. I own a Abarth 595 Competizione. It's hilarious fun

    • Instructions unclear. Joined a cult, had hilarious fun.

Its nice to see so much love for the MX5/Miata. They still get look down upon from a lot of the car communities.

    • +3

Tbh the ones that look down on an MX5 just honestly don't know anything about cars and the pure driving nirvana you can have in one.

Or perhaps that they need to compensate for lacking size in other areas.

    • +1

Car insecurity is a real thing. It's incomprehensible, but small cars upset people somehow. Electric cars too - there are heaps of videos of random strangers damaging Teslas for no reason at all.

Maybe those guys who hate mx5s derive their entire identity from the big, powerful car they drive. I just don't find a car fun if it's over 1300kg. It might be easier and easier to buy >300kw these days, but who cares when its in an 1800kg package. That stuff can't change direction quickly at all. And you know, if people are that turned on by weight and power they should just drive a locomotive. 22 tonnes and 50000hp engine. That'd help to compensate for any other personal shortcomings ;)

      • Aussie's are becoming like Americans - bigger means better. That's why SUV's have become so popular. I give a pass to people driving a big Ute because they actually see a functional purpose.

        • Some utes have a purpose. Some are just for the sake of driving a ute's shape. My former supervisor, who had an SS ute, told me he was gonna make his girlfriend hire a van to move a fridge.

"There's no way you're putting a fridge in my ute. That's not what it's for!"

          • @freakatronic: I concur. I used to own a Ute purely for the utilitarian status. I did work in construction at the time but I had a company truck that I had to drive so my Ute was almost never taken to work.

Then again many of them are lowered and come with body kits so I wouldn't classify them as needlessly big cars.

    • Real car enthusiast would appreciate any drivers car even if it not their cup of tea/beer.

Then again a lot of douchebags out there, EV community is the worse though in my experience.

      • +1

EV drivers derive self worth from their sanctimony.

"I'm not harming the environment like you are. I'm using clean electricity, which comes for free from the wall outlet. Not like your dirty petrol which is wrung from the still-warm bodies of Iraqi children."

Fully ignoring the inconvenient bits about conflict minerals, rare earths from dictatorships, and coal fired electricity production.

        • +1

Also irony of leasing these EVs and "upgrading" cars like iphones is somehow environmentally friendly. Self righteous entitled idiots who basically spit on poor people for driving ICE cars.

I love Teslas but the online community puts me right off, I can see why people key Teslas.

I've been driving a Toyota 86 GT for over six years now. It's a fun car and also doubles as a daily driver for me. I'd like to upgrade to something more powerful but I like how it has back seats for when I have unexpected passengers.

    • +1

I like how it has back seats

      Are they actually usable?
I tried one out in the showroom - it looks more like a back shelf then a back seat

      • I have used them multiple times for adults but only for short trips! (like dropping people home). The thing is they are bucket seats so you sink into them and the front two seats are kind of hollow in the back so the knees of the backseat passengers can dig into them.

They aren't ideal and definitely warn your passengers that it'll be a squeeze before they commit to it. Also using those seats will make the front two seats less comfortable as you have to move those seats forward or the backseats have no legroom (assuming you drive with the seat most of the way back like I do).

Anyway, they're useful when you're in a pinch but not entirely practical. lol

WRX STi. You could get a fairly recent one for the sort of cash you're looking at, and not much will go near it on the road. Almost limitless options on interior and exterior aftermarket upgrades and very little needs to be done to make them unbelievably powerful/fast, if you're into that.

Really depends on what you want mate, theres no one answer. Do you like new cars? Do you have a particular type of car you want? Do you want speed? Do you want to look cool?

Personally, most new cars do little for me, I wouldn't buy one, regardless of how good they are. To me, 90s - early 00s Japanese and European cars are much more interesting, and can get amazing performance - but thats just me. I have a friend with a Toyota Chaser (basically a fancy RWD camry), and with less than $10k work, it runs 10 second quarter mile times, which is BS fast for a street car. If you're into that, a Supra may not be a bad idea - 2JZ with the 6 speed manual ones are rocketing up in price as Americans are beginning to import them, likewise with older Skyline GTRs. Personally, if it was a weekend car, I wouldn't get something close to new, as you'll be losing a lot of value for the amount of use you'll get out of it.

  • Buy a WRX or if you can a WRX STI.

  • I’ve stopped at ‘misseus’.

    • I think he meant masseuse

    • Possibly "Miss Youse" meaning he will try to avoid hitting you whilst drag racing?
