    Amazing price

I'm gonna have to thinq about it

  • +14

someone tell me if ThinQ is pronounce "think" or "thin queue". It's been eating at me for years.

    • +3

Officially, according to LG at CES 2018 it's "thin queue".

But as can be seen from reddit, both ways are used in the wild.

      • do they ever explain the etymology behind the name? why they called it that?

        • There was nothing mentioned in the first bit of the video that I watched that alluded to the etymology of the name.

      • lol

      • +19

        ThinQ for clearing that up

        • +8

          Qr welcome

      • Lol!

For those of you wondering, my link templates are "[666](666)" and "[666](/node/666)". Looks like I used the wrong one and forgot to paste the actual YouTube video link. It should have been LG at CES 2018

        • +1

Philip the android they set up for the ThinQ demonstration almost appears human - very advanced LG tech.

    • -6

pretty sure they meant "Thank You" but you know asians they pronounce it differently

    • -1

      It's Thank you

      • why would you call a phone Thank You?

  • Thin Q I think

    • +2

      That's what you ThinQ!

this or iphone XS for $999 ?

    • Depends

    • +10

      Buy 2 of these.

    • Right now, probably this. If iPhone SE 2 does come out, it will make things interesting early next year. It's meant to have A13 CPU and should be cheaper than $999.

      • +1

will it be that same 4" screen as SE1?

        • iPhone 8 form factor apparently. Basically, iPhone 8 with A13 CPU with perhaps standard wide angle lens from 11. If it also supports low light, it could be quite competitive.

          • @netsurfer: They may as well make an SE2 Plus then with the body of an 8 Plus.

  • Would this be a suitable upgrade from an S7 Edge? I'm sick of the Samsung bloat and laggy google maps performance.

    • If your talking about performance… yes, snapdragon 845 and 6g ram is plently of grunt.

My s6 edge has been holding strong and have been cheaping out on an upgrade but its time has come.

    • it's equivalent to S9 in specs. Better DAC, but has a notch. You can hide the notch though.

    • +2

I bought v40 a few months ago upgrading from s7 edge, I'm still very happy with the phone and i paid about 600. This is an awesome price and yes it is definitely a decent upgrade. To my ears music sounds a lot better on this phone too (particularly wired headphones anyway).

      • How do the camera and battery life compare? Also I generally prefer closer to stock Android, what's the V40 like in terms of its software?

        • Depends how much you use it. As an average user I get 1.5 day using it in dual sim mode. Normal camera is great, zoom camera is not the best and also darker (higher F stop), wide angle is acceptable. Not a fan of the front cameras in low light situations. The software was buggy in some situations, did an update which fixed that but had the camera become bon responsive which is also fixed now on it's own. Must have been an app update.

        • Battery life is not great (3300 mAh battery) compared to other Android phones. Cameras - has 3 lenses, but remember this is a 2018 phone so don't expect too much. The ultra wide changed from 13mm (V30) to 16mm (V40). Camera quality wise, better than V30, but cannot compare to 2019 phones.

Stock Android - it is not Android One. Android Pie (9) is the current version. I don't know Android's circle folders, LG ones are squares with rounded corners (which I prefer). Launcher is okay, not great though.

          • +2

@netsurfer: A flagship phone released only 14 months ago ( launched Feb this year in Australia ) from the worlds 7th ( by volume ) smartphone manufacturer, and "don't expect too much" for $399-$700+ now from a Australian store ( was over $1200 closer to release ).

I would expect something decent from this smartphone, and going by many real world owners feedback/reviews, most people are pretty happy with their purchase.

I know smartphone tech,especially/mainly the on-board cameras are progressing quickly, but I just to get some balance and fairness for this model.

            • +4

@ozhunter68: I have this phone and I tried to be as objective as possible. Just don't want to sugarcoat this too much. I bought one around this price (and used feeBay plus $50 voucher on it).

There are various minor issues and battery life just isn't great. While the screen portion is flat, there are still curves. Decent screen protectors are hard to find. Local eBay sellers sell inferior ones (either poor quality PET - easily scratched or inferior tempered glass - making touch screen less responsive).

Software, well… it does have little glitches. It's capable of 1440p HDR but YouTube by default locks it to 1080p. It is odd because S9 doesn't have this issue so I don't get why Google does that. OS update, only 1 so hardly any security update. The search screen, come on LG, you can do better than that to hide the ears/notch better (but to be fair, it is the same glitch for all LG phones anyway).

Dual SIM setup, while there is a quick switch toggle, I'd rather the phone app lets me choose which SIM I want to use there, instead of I need to choose the SIM prior to entering the phone app. The data SIM selection, there are two screen/options, one of them is quick, the other one is slow. Basically, I prefer the el cheapo Xiaomi and Lenovo dual SIM implementation, rather than LG's implementation.

It does not hurt to know the less than ideal side of this phone. Let's not forget LG G7 (same CPU, IPS screen, 1 less camera lens, 64GB instead 128GB and only 4GB RAM) was $399.

              • @netsurfer: Sure, I agree that this like most if not all smartphones have some software caveats are not ideal or suit us, even with latest apple, pure google and samsung, you just need to research and pick what you think will suit you most.

Also when getting a lower cost 1 or two year old flagship or other phone, especially one like this for $500 ( for local stock ) some small hardware and software preferences can be overlooked, unlike real hardware problems and/or bootloop lol.

Just gave your earlier comment a + to go back to neutral as you make fair points and your right, people need to know as many pros and cons as to go into a new phone with eyes wide open.

                • +2

@ozhunter68: It's good value. Hardware wise, it has all the bells and whistles. 3 lenses at the back, 2 at the front. NFC, wireless charging, fast charging, B28 all there. The quad DAC is good. Really wished LG put in a larger battery though.

Software is okay, but not great. Doesn't have annoying notification glitches like Xiaomi MIUI or Lenovo's weird customisation.

                  • @netsurfer: I was worried about the battery too until I saw this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3H9M3ay7GvQ& I spent about 7 hours yesterday watching reviews, and reading up on forums etc and I think it should be good enough. Was getting some mixed responses from people though.

              • +1

You said this last deal, but this isn't the case for me. Plays 1440 HDR by default fine.

@Captain Howdy: Okay, thanks for the info. Had to reboot the phone to get that adjusted properly.

    thanq you

  • Any idea if this can be purchased with the discounted price through their web store? Would like to use Zip pay…

    • +1

No because it's an eBay code mate.

  • This or s10e?

    • s10e for $500??

      • I think that'd be an easier decision for me, but for $750

    • +1

S10e if you can stretch the budget. Faster CPU, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5 (with all 3 enhancement features implemented). The display is slightly better. Samsung put the screen protector on by default.

  • +4

This or a packet of peanuts?

    • +2

v40 has better battery but you can eat peanuts… hmmm decisions…

  • +2

    Thanks purchased 1

  • For anyone on a tight budget can get the 64gb black model on ebay for $394 delivered at your own discretion for warranty etc.

Pretty amazing phone brand new for under $400

    • pretty sure those are refurbs sold as brand new in box, but they give you a random box. 96% feedback rating. If they were legit people who buy and resell.

      • Got a Sony Xperia XZ from them in May this year for $230 ( before discount code ) and was fully expecting an opened/generic boxed grey import ( was supposed to be new, but not sure till you see it ). To my surprise it came quickly in a Brand New Australian Original Box with all original Australian wall charger and warranty. Phone has worked well till now.

96.6% feedback is still not too bad for a high turn over ebay store that sells @ rock bottom prices. Not sure about this V40 though in all honesty lol.

    I pulled the trigger.

    Fantastic OP. Thanks much.

I was dilly dallying about this phone since I saw the last $500 deal here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/503253. After the deal expired, I shopped around to find a better "value" deal to no avail. And also watched some youtube battery/camera comparison videos for better perspective. No other phone can come close for the value on paper. Now hopefully my user experience matches up :)

I am upgrading from a practically landline like, dead battery , shattered screen 4 year old iPhone 6s :)

edit: $700 Huawei Mate 20 pro was the other short list for me.

  • I used Xiaomi Pocophone F1 for 1 year, but I need B28(700mhz). I bought V40 Thinq 3 weeks ago.

Honestly, Poco F1 is faster than V40 even though same SD845 and 6GB Ram. V40 is lighter and has google pay, OIS, AOD, IP68. Maximum Brightness is similar, Minimum brightness is more brighter than Poco F1.

I like Xiaomi Poco F1, but V40 has OIS camera, B28 and NFC.

Using this for 9 mths now and love it.

Great phone, great cameras, leather wallet case from Amazon works great too.

  • I've been eye-ing this but I have JB vouchers that I want to use.

Would JB price match this store?

  • +1

Oooh I hadn't even considered this one.

Anyone had any experience with this and the Samsung A50 or A70.

I was settled on the A50 or A70 depending on which I could get the best price on, so this has thrown a spanner in it. Any pearls of wisdom? Thanks in advance.

    • +2

Think of LG V40 as Samsung S9 Plus then decide. This is the second time the phone is around this price.
No experience on A50 or A70.

  • -4

    $399 soon ? thanks

  • How do you get it for 499? 15% off is $528 + shipping

    • I received a $35 additional discount from eBay. I'm not entirely sure where this came from, but it was automatically applied.

    • Extra AU $35 Off Each Item. Automatically applies at checkout.

  • Do You think it's going to get any cheaper on boxing day?

Also, if you have any issues, how do you get it repaired?

I've been using Samsung for a few years and although they have great customer service and many repair centers my last phone has failed too many times and would like to change.

  • +1

It won't let me use the plateau code. Is it ebay+ only

    • Same, code is no longer working on checkout, don't know if it's just because I don't have eBay Plus or if eBay has disabled the code or Allphones/Mobileciti have disabled it on the phone.

    • No. Definitely not eBay+ only.

  • +1

    Still working here.
    Voucher/coupon PLATEAU
    Applied: AU $88.04

    • Same here. (I am running through a VPN in Hong Kong, though.)

  • This? Or oppo reno 2z?

  • This is a hail Mary.
I should have looked deeper into this device but it turns out you can't root this version nor is there a TWRP build for it.

I'd really like to be able to root it.

I could be mistaken and I'm hoping someone has had experience rooting this particular device
    Thanks
