  • I have a 1450T - you have to email them to get the free maps.

Make sure you keep the code as their systems don't always remember it…

  • Wow, So the only thing that can kill a GPS is if its battery goes completely dead……. even then you could use it constantly wired ,, ~~~ forever.

I am still using a 3 year old Garmin nuvi, no problems, maps just a little old in newer suburbs but otherwise pretty good.

  • I bought a Garmin from USA in early 2008 and that was just before I left US and moved to Aus. However after coming here I found that the unit doesn't have Ausie map and then contacted Garmin. They asked me to pay $300+ for Ausie map. Then I ended up buying a Tom Tom. I still have that old Garmin GPS somewhere in the storage. According to this deal, hope I can get the maps for Ausie for free or is it just if I already have Ausie maps ??

I'd love to add that I bought a Garmin nuvi 3690T https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134&pID=63940 which is the highest end in the nuvi line at time of writing. It is probably the worst GPS I've owned in terms of usability. This thing, which is beautiful to look at, runs some unfortunate version of Android that feels as though Garmin got part way through deploying, got bored and just shipped it. Sometimes, button presses don't register. Scrolling is jerky. There is almost no logic to the menu system. It also has this great usability feature where, when you hit the third keystroke of a suburb, the device brings up a list of all suburbs in Australia that match those first three letters. Not a bad idea in theory, but in execution the problem arises - the list only comes up after a second or so delay, in which time your finger has gone on and tapped the fourth letter of the suburb name, which the device assigns it to the newly displayed suburb list, which wasn't even there at the time of tapping. it's all just a mess. Garmin/Android, whoever is to blame, it's an absolute failure of a device usability wise. The actual mapping is on par with your run of the mill GPS device, but it's the not wanting to use it for fear of getting frustrated and annoyed that stands in front of that.

It also calculates slower than my 4 year old TomTom despite having what I'm assuming is a much faster processor, probably bogged down by the crap Android has it running.

    END RANT THANKYOU
