    I would get the Yamaha RX-V685 for $699: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/507346

Of course if you don't like Yamaha's sound (some people don't) then get the Sony listed here. ETA just realised Sony is 7.1.2 vs Yamaha 5.1.2 with an Atmos setup.

    • Sure. I am waiting for a nice deal on Yamaha Rxv1085 or the aventage series myself. :-)

It's tricky, seems specs have it as Amplifier 7 Channels, Audio Decoding 7 Channel + Phantom 2 Channel so therefor their claim of "Dolby Atmos delivers breathtaking realism with 360deg surround sound, accurately positioning sound within your environment so that the 7.1.2 speaker channels (including Phantom Surround Back)" you need to have ACTIVE atmos speakers… seems like a huge pain in the ass to run a separate amp just for overheads which are to be not overpowering anyway (just need to add ambience unlike fronts)

      • Hmmm so it's actually more like the Yamaha v685 like I first thought

  • Opinions please guys & gals - I have a Yamaha RX-V585 and it is absolutely useless at doing 4K passthrough with HDR; I've got the xbox, PS4 and PC hooked up to the receiver and passing through to an LG OLED C7 65" and not one of them works if you try to do 4K and HDR at the same time. I've replaced all the HDMI cables and even the panel in the TV replaced, but it's definitely the receiver that cannot handle the stream.

Does anyone have any experience with this Sony one getting it to work at 4K with HDR on? And if not, anyone with direct experience of a similar priced Denon/Onkyo etc?

Yup - recently bought this for this exact reason and it works flawlessly with 4k60hz and HDR with my PC/PS4/4k bluray player. I think all I had to do from memory was choose which of the HDMI inputs on the receiver would use "enhanced" mode to support HDR.

      • Thanks Satish! When you say choose which will use enhanced mode, can you set them all to this mode, or can only 1 or 2 inputs handle it?

        • +1

I think all but one of the inputs can handle the 4k+HDR enhanced mode.

    • Why not just use an optical cable between the tv and receiver and run everything else directly to the tv?

      • Unfortunately the old TOSLINK optical cable standard is 35+ years old and can't handle modern HD audio streams - True HD, DTS-HD, Atmos, etc. It's a viable workaround for some basic 5.1, but arguably anyone who wants to spend $600-800+ on a quality receiver is in it for some of those modern formats.

    • I have this receiver and spent a lot of time and frustration getting HDR /4k working correctly from ps4 and xbox. I purchased new cables and a new projector and still no dice. i persevered and kept changing cables until i found the magic cable combination.

In short it is very picky about which cable to use, people on forums said this and i wasnt convinced, but it is true!

The cable that ended up working was a random cable i have no idea where i got it from, spewing cause i would buy heaps more.

Also the cable to the projector that i can vouch for if you need a 10m run was this one:

      https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0036BHCSS/ref=ppx_yo_d…

for some reason the 30ft cable is a third of the price than the 3ft cable!

      • Mate if you're running anything above 25ft, almost all HDMI cables will struggle, unless they are active or optic fibre

The one I used at exactly 25ft was a monoprice commercial series not rated for HDR passthrough but it worked (for my Yamaha v681)

    • https://europe.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/av_receiv… specs say it support eARC, so just run devices to the TV, w/ an HDMI to the v585.

Little off topic… but I go out of my way to disable HDR where ever I can. Love the concept, but the user experience is below par. Even Netflix/Prime direct stream to LG C9 (ISF bright) I have to switch the lights off to see what's going on sometimes.

      • +1

Thanks for reading up raybies, but unfortunately the 2017 LG C7 series didn't get a firmware update to support eARC, only the 2019 C9 series did. And my understanding is both the TV and receiver need to support eARC to get it to work, otherwise you're still stuck with the same older 5.1 audio mixes you'd get with optical.

        • My bad.

Also my previous HDR comment I meant Technicolor expert not ISF bright.

  • I got the Sony STRDH790 7.2ch Home Theatre AV Receiver $505 Express delivery from Kogan
$850 on JB HiFi. I called Jb hi-fi to price match, Kogan. Lady said no they don't price match online stores,
Which is so not true.Because I price match Amazon all the time. She said oh they should not be doing that. I said yeah right. and just bought it from Kogan!
