      Public Service Announcement:
Think twice before using this med. If your liver is already overworked because of alcohol drinking, taking this medicine will put further strain on your liver.

      • -3

        Bah humbug…

        • -6

Paracetamol toxicity is the foremost cause of acute liver failure in the Western world, and accounts for most drug overdoses in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.[61][62][63][64] According to the FDA, in the United States, "56,000 emergency room visits, 26,000 hospitalizations, and 458 deaths per year [were] related to acetaminophen-associated overdoses during the 1990s. Within these estimates, unintentional acetaminophen overdose accounted for nearly 25% of the emergency department visits, 10% of the hospitalizations, and 25% of the deaths."[65]

It's a dangerous drug that should not be available over the counter (but it's cool because there's so much money being made so it's OK that people are dying at rates far higher than illicit drug use).

          • @Diji1: You really need to know when to stop complaining. People in western countries die of para overdose because they aren't busy with fighting malaria and other disease.

          • +4

@Diji1: Cute, this quote nothing but fear-mongering.

Almost anything is toxic in a high enough dose, like caffeine. Are you going to tell people to stop drinking coffee, coke and tea? For paracetamol this is over 4000mg or 8 regular 500mg tablets within 24 hours. This is always listed on the box. A standard adult dose is no more than 2 regular 500mg tablets or 1000mg. Even at 3x a day, that's 3000mg, 1000mg short of the max daily dose.

What should also be noted is that typically a lot of cold and flu tablets come with paracetamol which has to be taken into account but these will also be 2x500mg tablet doses so it's not hard to calculate your intake.

Regarding alcohol, I doubt you'd find any med practitioner recommended any drug with alcohol regardless of whether it affects it or not.

TLDR: Read the dose instructions on the box and you'll be fine.

      • +8

I don't know why you are negged, paracetamol and alcohol are not a good mix.
If you are hungover take ibuprofen instead.

https://metro.co.uk/2017/01/01/why-you-shouldnt-take-paracet… (or Google and find a medical Journal about it for a non news article)

    • +6

Don’t ever take paracetamol with or right after alcohol consumption. It becomes toxic and might cause liver failure and death. You were probably thinking of Aspirin, not Panamax

  • -1

    Would prefer Australian made.

    • +8

You won't be able to afford it then.

      • +1

Hardly. Tablets are produced in factories where machines do most of the work anyway.

        • +10

But machines here costs more, so does the electricity to operate the machines, so does the people to operate the machine, so does the people to service the machines, so does the land that the machines need to be on, so does the building that the machines need to be in so does producing the raw materials to go in the tablets.

          • +2

@spaceflight: And the govt taxes they throw on top, to subsidise the PM's private travels to Hawaii while the country suffers. Those same taxes subsidise the big corps who don't pay taxes, etc etc…

            • -4

@dangerdanger: How does the country suffer when the prime minister takes a well deserved holiday with his wife and kids? The people in the country are incompetent to deal with things while he's away? Stop being ridiculous

Big companies are always going to find ways to minimise their taxes, it's part and parcel of being smart and doing business. The alternative is that those companies give us the finger and take their product or service elsewhere.

              • -2

@Oofy Doofy: Unless you're volunteer fighting fires, while the PM holidays in Hawaii… all the while saying that "you want to be there fighting fires, no benefits for you!" "Nothing to do with climate change!" "Coal is good!"

And about those companies : the smaller Aussie companies pay taxes +++ because they can't hide their income at off-shore tax havens, or a subsidiary in Singapore. So if your family business pays your fair 30% tax, while FB and Apple make billions with <1% tax… you think that's fair? Just part of doing business?

Wake up - those big companies won't give you the finger because there was a time when they weren't even operating in Aust. They NEED your money, not the other way around.

                • @dangerdanger: There was no paid leave system in place… So it seems some kind of middle ground has been reached in circumstances like these.

I don't see how it makes the prime minister a bad guy for taking a holiday with his family. At this point I think any kind of holiday will be frowned upon for any reason because we have a lot of strange people around these days.

Yes it's unfair large companies find a way to minimise their taxes in the countries they 'operate' in, but that's the way of the world and when you are as large as these companies, they will always have the best tax lawyers, amongst many other legal and finance professionals, to do their utmost to reduce their tax burden.

I believe the case for a flat tax system for everyone is making a case for itself, but I see no progress towards that kind of thinking in Australia yet.

          • @spaceflight: You're claiming those things. At a guess one could assume some of them to be true, but I think there are a lot of ways companies can cut down their cost of doing business, even in the west.

    • What a knockout deal

Stick to the recommended dosage. If the Acetaminophen doesn't provide relief see the Doc. Don't double up with something else without chatting to you Pharmacist or Doctor. Just like doctors, not all Pharmacists are equal. Find one who explains things to you and explains clearly. Your answer to "are you taking anything else" answer should also include herbal products (many medicines were derived from herbs).
    Quote:
A total of 101 drugs are known to interact with Panadol (acetaminophen).
    8 major drug interactions
    55 moderate drug interactions
    38 minor drug interactions

    • Could you please reference your interactions summary?

      • +2

I no longer have an account for access to best information but grabbed basic information here https://www.drugs.com/drug-interactions/acetaminophen.html

Pharmacists are specialists in drugs (not label-lickers, as my father used to call them). Chat with a Pharmacist for advice if you are uncertain. If you (or someone you know) are prescribed a number of drugs, a Pharmacist should be able to organise a review).

    Limit one box? WTF?

    • Line up again if you need more.

  • Weren't these as low as forty something cents before?

That being said I'd happy buy some for 69c too!

  • What's the expiry date?

  • +4

WHy buy this when you can buy panadol for like $7 for 10 ? !!

    • because panadol and panamax are the same medicine. You're paying for the brand when you pay for panadol.

  • FYI: Limit of 2 boxes per customer in store while on sale (or at least that is the official policy).

Online always restricts you to 1 box, regardless of price.

  • Hehehe…. 69…. ;-)
