Pretty great price for a 1440p 144hz Monitor. They have a bunch of other deals on for boxing day https://www.shoppingexpress.com.au/Boxing-Day-Flash-Deals-20… but the monitor is the one that caught my eye.

This is part of Boxing Day Sales for 2019

According to Samsung these are not Freesync monitor, it's just 144hz. Shopping express ads are misleading.

      The JG54 and JG56 are Freesync. You're thinking of the JG50/JG52. It's a confusing line-up.

      • +4

        Correct, very confusing.

Very good price, just keep in mind the caveats that come with VA panels, namely the dark smearing with fast content.

If you're buying a 144hz monitor primarily for faster motion in FPS games (particularly anything cel-shaded or cartoonish in its look), this is not for you.

Example video using UFOTest, where you can notice the darker motion trailing quite starkly at the top, and to a lesser extent at the bottom.

Here's some footage of PUBG, where you can see it in a 'real world' example, and the shimmering around dark objects/edges as they move quickly across the screen.

The camera footage doesn't show it, but the contrast will be beautiful, it's just that without a custom backlight solution, it's really tough to get the most out of these VA panels at these refresh rates.

    • Are there any 144 monitors from here that you would recommend for FPS?

      • +1

        From Shopping Express' sales? No.

Take a look at the AOC 24G2 for 1080p 144Hz, other than that I'd just be waiting for next year's models, or maybe something like the LG 27GL83A reaching our shores.

There'll be a slew of monitors announced for CES as well (and some already have been), but the hype will be around 120Hz OLED, and 240Hz IPS and TN.

There's 240Hz VA as well, but seeing as we've only seen one VA monitor that comes close to 144Hz so far, it's not looking good (Samsung's model of that has sunk all the way down to $360).

        • AOC 24G2 looks really good hopefully it goes on sale sometime this boxing sales, thanks a bunch

        • Agreed, that AOC 24G2 looking good. ETA 14-01-2020 on Scorptech and CentreCom both for $269

          • @monk00: Wireless1 on eBay should shave a few more dollars off.

        • I see there’s a an ips variant too? Which one do you recommend of the aoc one

          • @Understandable: The 24G2 is the IPS variant, you're thinking of the C24G1, I think? That was listed on Amazon, and it's a pretty unique VA monitor, but they've apparently done an even better job with the 24G2.

AOC have been throwing out budget winners for a while now.

            • @jasswolf: i have set my mind on the 24G2, looks so good except theres no stock anywhere :( since im rural ill just wait till its in stock at centrecom for the free shipping

Thanks for all the info, very helpful.

I am currently looking for a 1440p monitor (144Hz would be a plus) but coming from 1080p IPS @ 60Hz, may probably go with the ViewSonic VA2719-2K 60Hz for the IPS display.

  • +1

Amazing specs for the price. I think hoping for an IPS with this spec sheet at a similar price range is a dream for now.

    • From an FHD perspective, those cheaper Panda IPS panels seem to meet the refresh rate window for 144Hz well, but they haven't put out a QHD panel yet.

The budget QHD IPS option is the new Viewsonic, which uses an Innolux (currently sluggish) panel. Personally I'd wait for CES and see what next year's QHD 240Hz and OLED 120Hz options are, and estimated price points.

      • Good point. I estimate we are still atleast another year off for good IPS panels at this price point

        • +1

Well and truly, but if the LG 27GL83A makes it here, that might shake things up a bit.

  • Great deal. Cheaper than the Kogan model sales for the same specifications while Samsung offers their 3 year warranty with local service centers locations too. Compared to Kogan which only comes with one year warranty.

  • Is this the same model as https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/samsung-27-169-2560x1440-wqhd-1… ? Specs look the same but model number is different

    • This is the Freesync version.

  • I was going to buy a Samsung C27 for $450 which was the going price about 6 months ago… $300 is insane. I'd buy it if I didnt already have that $250 Acer 28 4k unit.

  • is it worth to upgrade to 1440p 144hz from 1080p 144hz?
my current monitor is a samsung 144hz 1080p va but it has a tiny crack and some backlight bleed (which will not be covered by warranty thanks to the crack) so I am wondering if it's worth upgrading

    • I'd say it is but it becomes a point of how to get rid of old monitors.

I have an Acer 28" which does 1440 and 2160p and I think 1,440 is a great res. over FHD.

      4k is questionable.

      • my old monitor has a small crack which has killed it's resale value and it's the reason I want to upgrade, so I'm essentially looking at spending the whole 320 just to upgrade to 144hz 1440p

        • Yeah do it.

I dont think we're going to see an IPS 27 1440 144hz at this price any time soon.

          Maybe by xmas next year.

  • Is this g-sync compatible?

    • Oh well, decided to get it anyway

    • +2

Yes. Anything with Freesync is G-Sync compatible as long as you've updated your drivers since January ;)

I'm currently running of an Freesync ASUS monitor and the G-Sync is detected and working.

      • Oh thanks for the confirmation!

Is that so? I thought from what I read, not all monitors are gsync compatible even if they have freesync, only some are…

        • Check to see when those articles were posted. NVIDIA made Freesync compatible in January.

  • +1

    Thanks buddy, bought one

  • What the difference between the two:

Samsung CJG54 27" 144Hz WQHD Curved FreeSync Gaming Monitor
Samsung CJG5 27" 144Hz WQHD VA Curved Gaming Monitor

    • +1

      CJG5 doesn't have Freesync.

  • Being a curved monitor, any issues with you setting up two of them side by side?

  • Considering this monitor but unsure if image blur will be worse than my current monitor, LG 24EB23 IPS. Is it wiser to spend money on TN panel like the KG271UA or 2K CQ27G1?

  • I bought 2 of these monitors from SE on the 23rd Dec., still hasn't come yet. They've been closed since boxing day and couldn't get anyone on the phone for a price match purchase. Tracking history do not show movement yet but just received by facility..

Should I purchase 2 again and have the other ones returned to sender? Or should I just wait till Monday and speak with them and if they don't give me a price match i will threaten to just request for a refund and RMA. I can always say I haven't received the items yet anyway.

I'm pretty sure AustPost will just divert these to collect at the local post anyway as they never deliver to me if it's anything larger than a shoebox.

    any advise would be appreciated…

    • They may not have been sent yet..

You can call Shopping express when they open again and ask to cancel the order.

Christmas time is a bad time to buy when stores close for a week and get inundated with back orders coming back from the holidays super busy.

Post office also closes for the public holidays further delaying deliveries.

I've had the best experience with shopping express when i call and confirm my orders but they are always during working days and not holidays.

  • Would the 4ms response rate be a deal-breaker? (I'm looking for a monitor with similar specs but price bracket usually is high with 144Hz and 2K(1440p) with curver display)

    • Most IPS panels until very recently have had around 3-4 ms peak G2G response times. For a smooth experience at a given refresh rate, you want every response time under that refresh window, so for 144Hz:

      1000ms/144 = ~ 6.94ms

Until recent IPS panels (eg. LG 27GL850 and 240Hz IPS panels), this was only done by TN satisfactorily. Even with this advancement for IPS, you still see some powdery trailing as while the rise times (transition in) are within that window, some of the fall times (transition out) are not (and even TN struggles with this to an extent).

VA in effect trades off further response time issues in darker transitions (black to near-black to darker shades) for increased contrast. Recent VA panels are decent at 120Hz-144Hz, but you'll still tend to see this, particularly in poorly executed budget panels. I've linked videos of this effect in testing and games for almost the exact same version of this panel in an earlier comment above.

Given CES - one of the two or three big trade shows for monitors - starts in a week, it might be worth keeping your wallet closed to see what models get announced, as it's anticipated that some of them will be available for purchase from April. QHD 240Hz TN, 25" FHD 240Hz IPS and VA, as well as some newer 144Hz options should all be in the mix, as well as some OLED monitor announcements.

Given all that competition, prices like this for QHD 144Hz may become to new normal.
