Good post. You might want to add the 533dc also well discounted (better motor)

  • Any thoughts? The name is amazing.

Not needing to purchase a fan atm because mine's still going strong but future reference is appreciated. I like loud fans if this is one.

    • This is loud but constant white noise (whoooosh), not like creaking/rattling some fans do. Love this thing as it cools down the whole area as opposed to a fan when it's just blowing in your direction.

      • In terms of space as well this seems like a really great fan. Current one takes up like 60cm²

      • +4

I turn my Vornado on every night, even in winter because I love the noise so much.

As long as you don't mind the optics, can't beat the industrial fans from Bunnings.

    https://www.bunnings.com.au/dynabreeze-450mm-silver-industri…

    • +1

I had one of those for years, it pushes a LOT of air around. Absolutely worth it.

    • How loud are these?

      • +2

Very loud, I couldn't sleep with one on but damn does it move air

      • On low, not that loud, and still moves heaps of air.

Remember larger blades require lower rpm to move the same volume of air. I'd expect the tiny blades on the vornado to be louder. But I can't be sure as I've never done a side by side.

        • Agree. Vornados are over-rated/priced. Had one and returned it the same afternoon.

All fans "push" air, just a matter of how much air gets "pushed". The high velocity fans would do a much better job in air circulation. Simple physics - oh wait, maths/science is not compulsory at school these days… marketing wins.

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Reading something along the lines of "the air that comes out of the vornado is spinning" set off my BS alarm.

How is the air spinning if there is no longer a direct force to apply change in velocity vector? "Magic of marketing" perhaps.

Here it is "As the air exits the Air Circulator, Vornado's AirTensity Grill straightens the airflow to ensure the air travels long distances. The airflow column will spin and twirl to the opposite corner".

  • I find them fantastic. Not stupid loud like some metal branded fans, but quite powerful, sleek and easy to clean. I use them in commercial kitchens, so being black(harder to see grease build up) and easy to clean are pretty important factors.

  • Does anyone know if this can be turned on and off at the powerpoint? I want to hook it up to a wifi powerpoint… My current vornado has digital buttons, so cant do it.

    • I have the 660 and it can't. The power button on the unit needs to be physically pushed. Not sure exactly for this model but I would assume the same.

Edit: just read below, so do you

      • Well thats a deal breaker then. Thanks

        • Sorry meant the 660, so the same as you. But Naigrabzo said it doesn't below so right outcome.

    • +2

I have a 633 and it has a physical switch like the one in the product photo, I assume it's the same and can be turned on and off at the powerpoint

    • -1

I have one that looks exactly like this, and we run it on a smart switch no problem. (edit: yes i have this exact model - 533)

  • I love my 660. Got it for $130 or so after the ShopBack 20% off.
Wish it had a timer (I use a smart wall plug to turn it off) or remote though.

I am however sick of moving it around the house, so contemplating getting another one.

Anyone with the 533 and 660?

    • Thats the same one i have.. downside is you cant turn it on with a smart plug..

      • The buttons are annoying and wish it had an oscillation function but otherwise, seriously impressive air throughput!

  • +1

I have one and its epic for moving air around the room. Cant do smart plug though so but you can still switch off using smart plug. Cant switch on.

  • +5

    These fans are LOUD……

  • Higher price now. Deal over.

  • What about DC? Can we switch them on via smart plug?

    • +2

Yes you can. 633dc has a rotating dial to control the speed. You just leave it to what speed setting you like and control power via smart plug.

      • Can you run the DC ones of a modified sine wave inverter?

        • No idea mate. Since it's using a DC motor then it should be ok? Don't take my word for it though.

          • +1

@jubified: I've asked vornado. I'm awaiting their reply.

  • We have 3 x 660 ones at home. They are quieter than a fan and more efficient. Just bought the last remaining black one from Amazon AU for $141.94…So we will have 4 now!

    Don’t forget ShopBack cash back.

    • what's the difference between these vornado fans and a normal fan is it like faster or does it go around the room like what's what's so special about it

      • It's not like a fan where you can only feel it when it's facing you. This doesn't move but if you face it somewhere in your room, you can feel the air circulating (like a breeze), sorts like a ceiling fan function I guess.

        • If I'm on my bed can it blow air up then on me on my bed or do I need to elevate it like a normal fan so it pushed air to me on the bed while laying flat.

Also my room is very small so I just use an office chair and small desk fan for now but the desk fan honestly is pretty weak and I don't know why but it feels like it is losing power as there is no dust I can see blocking the passage of air.. So thinking about a vornado.

I like minimum level 2 on my fans and do usually go to level 3 or the fastest setting so which vornado do you recommend.

I pretty much live in a tiny rectangular closet barely 3m at the width so not much space to blow air around but would be nice to get a strong gale in here as opening my window at night is not possible and fast air makes it harder for the mosquitoes that get in through my broken old falling apart windows.

          • @AlienC: Aim it at the wall

          • @AlienC: Agreed on fast air to protect from mosquitoes.

Protip re cooling is to have a damp facewasher on your chest or back. As the fan blows directly on the cloth, evaporative cooling will make the cloth cool, and the water in general is a good conductor of heat. Caveman airconditioning.

            • @ozbjunkie: genius idea I keep forgetting how easy it is to keep cool by just using a wet cloth or something.. such a simple idea but one I keep forgetting most definitely

  • Dammit!

  • +1

Was just about to hit "buy" on the 633 for just over $100. Gone.

  • +4

We have three of these small fans, purchased a year ago. The verdict….don't buy. The switch is wired back to front: meaning you go from off to the highest fan speed straight off, then the second then the slowest. And yes they are loud and they don't do what they allegedly do and circulate the air around the room. They are amazingly overpriced also. Look inside the fan and realise you've been gouged. We have retired ours over the last two weeks and are happily using box fans from Woolworhs or Coles.
They are quieter and better. (We also have the large model Vornadoh which we are still evaluating…it seems better however).

    • +2

      Need a bargain on Specsavers.

    • +1

I'm with oraserat, not a fan. I purchased one for $49 at TVSN on clearance and it is pretty loud. The DC version seem more promising, but overall the larger ones seem to move a lot more air with a lot less noise. At the lowest mode the sound is OK but any higher and it gets annoying.

      • +2

I agree with this. If you like quiet fans stay away!!!

    • Supposedly the 660 is relatively quiet on setting 2. The bigger than fan the quieter they are for this brand.

  • Perfect for sucking dirt from the floor and blowing it around the house

    • +4

Should probably try clean your floors so.

  • Some may think this is a good deal but I’m not a big fan

    fanpuns

    • I just caught wind that you may not be one

      • It probably blew you away

  • Looking at the instruction manual on page 7 it seems the control knob is static, so I imagine you could use a smart plug with the 533.
