SAD edition. It would’ve been good to bring back the disc version with the same price.

    • +3

Yes! This is what I'm waiting for.

  • +26

So the advantage of this version is you pay $99.95 for all new titles when disc users pay $69 & you lose the 4k bluray player. Awesome.

    • -3

You effectively get two copies of digital games if you set a console as your master console.

  • +24

    “enjoy disc-free gaming”

Because the one with a drive can’t do that? That’s some BS marketing right there.

  • With the RRP being $225, I was expecting it to drop even more than just $26.

Maybe in a few months time.

  • +11

Eck. Digital only meaning you own nothing. No thanks. That's a dystopian future I don't want to be a part of

      • +8

I still play my xbox 360 games.

      • +5

I still have a working N64 with my original collection.

I too am annoyed this is the direction we're heading. I recently bought Modern Warfare 2019 and was disgusted to see the disc just directed you to download the game. At some point those servers will get shut down and I'll own a paperweight.

        • -8

That would be the case whether you bought it on disc or not. Same with Overwatch on disc for Xbox, one day it won't work on any xbox in the world. And if you don't have internet, then it already won't work at all on your xbox. But am I even going to remember what Overwatch is in 10 years time, will I even see the headline that announces the servers are being shut down forever?

          • +4

@AustriaBargain: I know I'm in the minority, but I play single player campaigns in CODs. Why should I be unable to play from a physical purchase that without pinging a server?

          • @AustriaBargain: Most games are single player and work just fine without an internet connection.

      • +1

+AustriaBangers Plenty of collectors around dumbass. Also if you have kids, you might want to replay some of the classics with them.

        • -7

If you have kids, you might especially not want to use scratch-able discs.

    • +1

I assume you don't have Netflix or Spotify then? Own all of your music, TV and movies?

It sucks but that ship has effectively sailed

  • +6

If only digital games were cheaper then physical copies…

  • -6

Is this like the 10th time this deal has been posted and the comments about no disk drive have followed???

  • This is kinda cringe bro

  • +4

    I can't remember the last time I bought a disc…

    • +3

If physical games weren't always cheaper than digital I'd consider the switch myself.

    • +8

I bought a game on disc, but I liked it so much I bought the digital version because too lazy to get up and put the disc in.

      • yeah but for most people that's the exception not the rule

      • OzBallin’

      • I have a wall of DVD's/Bluray, and my housemates and I fight over 'getting up, walking over, choosing the disc, walking to the DVD player, hitting eject LIKE AN ANIMAL, then sit down, only to realise we forgot to get the wine bottle!?!"

All the box sets/movies are on my HDD now.

And whilst the digital sales are good, gamepass has kept me going for half a year.

        • Also with game pass if you’re indecisive its great, they choose what you’ll play this month. Otherwise choosing a recent game to buy is too daunting for me.

  • +6

This is like the anti-bargain version of a console. No second hand/reduced price games for whoever buys this

    • +1

And that is the goal for Microsoft, Sony and all developers for some time. They hate EB Games and EBay as they make $0 from used disc game sales and consider it losing sales/money as the buyer would have otherwise have had to buy it new digitally from them. Most PC games have been sold only digital for around 10 years now so it’s inevitable that consoles will eventually follow this “ideal” business model. EB Games’ business model of relying on used disc game sales is in trouble as a result of this shift to digital only for consoles. While I’m mostly a PC gamer who buys games digitally, I still own and prefer the disc based Xbox One model over the digital only model. This DO model is no doubt MS’s way of conditioning gamers away from buying discs, to make a future full transition to digital-only less dramatic.

  • +8

    Poor value discless unit
Combine with poor performing Aus internet
    Now you're playing with fire
It's a hard pass from me

    • +4

Nope buying this version is plain stupid. You don't own any games, u just rent them. It's called the SAD edition for a reason.

      • -3

It's called SAD edition because of wanna be edgy people and mob mentally on here, this is absolutely no different to Netflix, but how many people whinging here still buy physical DVDs of movies? If people are so anti disc less and "renting games" great , then cancel your Netflix and online streaming and go back to blue ray and DVD . It's crazy how oblivious people are .

spoiler alert Of gaming with steam has already turned into this and if you play multiplayer games like the vast majority of people you are always renting games . You can only play while the servers are supported online.

        • +3

comparing to steam to the xbox store is terribly disingenuous and you know that argument is at an end

steam has numerous sales and the price is normally very very reasonable… I wish I could say the same about xbox…. or playstation to be fair

further with steam there are ways to back up your collection, if you so need and it has a viable offline mode… again I wish I could say the same about consoles

and even worse, something as bad as the Epic store has significant advantages over xbox and psn

the fact I'm even lauding the benefits of EPIC over consoles just about says it all!

          • @tonyjzx: You can tell the people complaining don't even own a Xbox, the Xbox store has a sale every single week. I agree on new titles it not the best , however after a month or two it gets competitive ( especially noting you can get two copies with share).

What are your talking about , you can play all game pass games offline . Offline mode is actually better on Xbox . On steam you need to log on and turn a game offline mode , while on Xbox you can just play offline at any time .

It's crazy how factually incorrect people on here are. It's quite obvious that people don't even own or use a Xbox but are some how pretending to be experts and downvoting based on no actual experience.

        • -1

What you talking bout. Plenty of people have a dvd / bluray collection. I still buy em. Physical is always better than digital.

          • @peterross: Personal preference is fine , if people prefer physical I fully understand, but a deal is still a deal.

A lot of people prefer Netflix over physical DVDs , doesn't make one better it's just a different choice.

        • -1

Big difference from Netflix which can take away shows or movies whenever they want. Also physical media includes data storage, which most people have plenty of shows and movies on their personal hard drives. DVDs and Blu-Rays are a lot less these days. I don't think I know anyone that doesn't have some sort of hard drive with movies or TV on there. I understand where you're coming from but monopolising the price only from their own store is not a good deal!

  • +4

If you buy this your at the mercy of whatever MS want to charge for the games. Knowing the disc version can be had way cheaper.

  • +10

This driveless console version is a brilliant piece of marketing by Microsoft to milk you of more money by allowing you to save a few dollars on the up front purchase.

All of my cheap xb games recently have been physical media. I guarantee any savings you make on your console purchase will be eaten up after one or two game purchases.

This late in the generation, this version needs to be $120 or less to make any sense. At this price, don't do it. Wait for a sale on a version with a disk drive.

    • +1

Not really, it's targeted for Xbox pass , it's no different to how Netflix operates , however everyone is losing their mind.

  • +4

Haha this is like Apple removing headphone jack and touting it as a bold move

    • Apple is removing all charge ports soon… COURAGE

  • Jbhifi kinda matched Microsoft's Xbox s 1tb and 4 games for me for $269.

Unfortunately it was three digital gsmes and only one physical (new star wars) game.

  • +4

    Disc-Free Gaming

Also bargain-free gaming. And lending-free gaming. And resale-free gaming. And import-free gaming? Not sure if you can buy digital games from other regions.

I think I've made my point. If only I'd gotten up early enough that everyone else hadn't already beaten me to it.

  • +2

I bought one a week a bit ago at like 219 (I had a $100 jb gift card to use). I already own a ps4 and I bought this just to use with the game pass and a few xbox 360 games and lost odyssey.

I honestly think this was a great deal for me, any first party game seems to get added to game pass and anything else I can just buy on ps4 anyway for cheap.

    • also wanted that xbox one s controller for pc play

  • +1

All these hot takes about how it's a rip off having to pay full price for digital games when game pass is much cheaper than buyer physical copies

These aren't for everyone but if you intend to just match it with game pass then it may be worth a look

  • -1

Besides being discless it's not even a good deal considering fortnite is free, sea of thieves is trash and Minecraft can be picked up relatively cheaply nowadays unless you want the 1000 dlc packs with it

  • Are there places you can regularly buy digital games at reasonable prices (like the prices of physical?)…

MSFT prices of digital copies from their store are mental!

    • Wait for them to go on special (Gold gets good discounts) or checkout CD Keys.
