  • Only one in stock though.

    • Oh, is it? Sorry, no idea how to check AMAZON stock level.

      • When you follow the link ypu posted click on the image of the lens at the top left hand side. You'll see there's only one in stock

    • No there is more.

      • I see now. OP's link confused me.

    • +2

No this is not the case. Camera Mart as the seller ($126) only has one in stock. OPs price is obtained from AmazonAU as the seller. I could checkout 5 units from AmazonAU (their maximum per person/order). You need to make sure to select AmazonAU as the seller for this deal.

To my knowledge the only way to "check stock" is to add as many as possible to the cart. Otherwise you can only see "low stock" on the listing, such as the 1 unit available from CameraMart.

Good deal OP, would buy if I wasn't in the Canon camp.

      • I see. Looks like OP posted a weird link that's why I thought it's the one at the top. I stand corrected then.

This lens brings back memories - it was my first "additional" lens purchase, and amazed me with it's ability to blur backgrounds!

    • I've been using a Nikon D3300 I think it is with the standard lens. Would this be any better?

      • +1

Yes… definitely better… without the zoom.

50mm on cropped is app 70mm eqv.

      • +21

No, it'll be manual focus only on the D3300 - you'd want the 'Nikon AF-S 50mm f1.8 G' (the AF-S bit is important) as that lens has an in-built autofocus motor.

But with that body, you might also consider the Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.8G DX - it's a little wider than the 50mm lens, but on your crop sensor give approximately the same angle of view. It'd be worth going into a shop to try both out and seeing which you prefer.

Or, if you're using an 18-55 kits lens (or something encompassing that range), set the zoom to 35mm and take some photos like that, then 50mm and take some more, to compare the focal lengths.

But no, don't buy this AF-D version lens!

          Thanks for the detailed reply!

      • +5

I gave dm01 an upvote, but just wanted to second the recommendation for the 35mm f/1.8G AF-S - that's the lens you want.

A 50mm on a DX body is nowhere near as versatile as the above.

        • 100%. I have both, started with the 50mm and it takes some great photos. But now that I have the 35mm I very very rarely use the 50mm anymore.

    • Yes… abit of a nostalgia… mine was the Canon metal version… over 10 years ago now… best value lens ever.

      • The Mk I version with the metal lens mount and focus distance window? I've still got one of those I can't bear to part with!

        • Yes… on a 5DI… haha… good old days…

If I am not wrong, the same lens kept its value to-date.

          • @[Deactivated]: I think they actually went up in value - when the MkII came out with a plastic mount and no focus distance window, the MkI gained a bit of status. I used to see them sell on eBay for over $200 just a few years ago.

The main reason I kept mine is to pair with an EOS 1N I got cheaply - it seems fitting to have them together.

  • pretty sure the DX crop mode is x1.5, unless theres an new nikon out that has a different dx crop factor.

    • Thanks. Updated.

    • Yep, Nikon Full-Frame Sensor is 36mm by 24mm, Nikon DX is 23.6mm by 15.7mm

  • the option label on amazon site shows G but it's a D lens and amazon just price following digidirect

    https://www.digidirect.com.au/nikon-af-50mm-f-1-8d-lens-jaa0…

so just buy from digidirect instead

    • Coming up as $135

      • Check again. Digidirect price is the same with free shipping also. Amazon just follows their pricing. Amazon are not photo expert hence the huge mistake with the G label on a D lens ..

    • What's the difference between the D and G lenses anyway? I have the 50mm F1.8G lens and am after the 35mm F1.8G, but they're usually between $250 and $300.

      • +2

G lenses have an in-built autofocus motor, that's the main difference, and I think there's no manual aperture ring on the G's either - it's all controlled in camera.

      • +1

G series is the later version, without the aperture ring/with a faster af-s motor.

        • And less noisy motor.
G lenses are newer and usually more expensive.

        Thanks dm01 & godofpizza

  • Is it compatible with Nikon D600 FX camera?

    • Yes it is.

      • Hi DM, thanks for your reply. May I please know which else lens are compatible or what series should I go for D600, as I am unsure and new to dslr. I tried google but it's confusing to me.

        • +1

          Copied from KenRockwell.com :

With a built-in AF motor and an aperture feeler for manual-focus lenses, it works great with every Nikon auto- or manual-focus lens made since 1977!

The D600 works perfectly with every AF lens made since 1987, AF, AF-I, AF-D and AF-S.

It also works great with AI and AI-S manual-focus lenses

Also have a read of Ken's Nikon FX lens suggestions here:

          KR FX Lenses

He cops a lot of flack on the internet, but Ken does actually have a lot of practical information on his site - make sure you help support his growing family! :D

  • This lens is rubbish at f/1.8 but by f/2.8 it's very good.
