i wouldn't be surprise some shops promote it to $299 in the next few days

    • You might be right.Since waited this long wait for couple months more.

      • didnt i say a few days? seems JB starting it already

    • lol yeah when it is only $250 in the US!! (see dy4me's link below)

      • +5

Dont talk to me about those bloody yanks. They've brought shit to the whole world with global financial meltdown and they have the nerve to get EVERYTHING cheaper than us. If it was me, they'd be paying double premium over what Aussies pay as punishment for their stupidity

  • is this the ps3 slim?

    • +2

i will say it is since they only sell the slim ones nowadays. :)

  • +1

This price drop is an international price drop.

      Sony AU info
A new, lower price for PS3 of just AUD$349.95RRP (160GB) and AUD$449.95RRP (320GB) was confirmed for Australia, making amazing and unique gaming experiences more accessible than ever (effective from 22nd August 2011).
      http://au.playstation.com/home/news/articles/detail/item3990…

      • hahaha, an extra $100 premium for about $30 of hard drive is a rort, especially when they detail how to change the drive in the manual and on their website….

  • +1

I would like to upgrade my old model as it is getting flakey. But to be honest the ps3 needs an update. 2 USB 2.0 ports is insufficient when you need to charge the controllers, and connect playtv and Move, not to mention connecting usb drives. As the older ps3's, which are still supported, had these features, it is only a matter of re-attaching the hardware. No firmware or software changes required (which by the way is where the big costs are).

At present $350 may be cheaper than it was, but for me the platform does not offer the value anymore.

    • +3

Not to mention the lack of wireless-n. Gaming/streaming without ethernet is so hampered by this.

      • lacking wifi-n does not matter to me, i use POE on my phat ps3 atm :P

      • Gigabit

    • +1

The network port is Gigabits. To get more USB ports all you need is purchase a USB hub which cost less then $10 which gives you 5 USB ports to play with. This is what I do to mine.

  • Sweet, and if it came down to 300 that'd be nice. I'm being told that it's $250 to get my ps3 repaired atm (hdmi broken, all other stuff works) so then it would surely be worth 50 bucks for a second console :P

    • +1

cant u just use component cables to get 1080i or 1080p? surely cheaper then buying a new ps3

      • +1

component cables wont give you proper HD like HDMI

        • +3

component gives 1080p just fine for games, but only SD for movies as it doesn't support HDCP.

        • im sure the minimal difference in 1080p HDMI + 1080p Component cables surely isnt worth spending another $349 on a new console……..?

  • Seeing as the price of these in the US are $250 usd now, are there any us sites that would sell them to Australians without a huge $P&H?

    • I think your looking at about $50 P&H :(

      http://www.priceusa.com.au/

    • +1

Remember, if you import you have no warranty or support from Sony, and blu-ray movies and PS1 games are region locked.

If P&H is $50 and an Australian power cable is $5, it's not worth it just to save $45.

  • +6

It is technically not a bargain as it is the same price everywhere from the same date, no?

So this should not be posted here unless Dicks or EB etc. come out with a $50 discount like Dicks did with the 3DS recently…

    bargain = $299
    $348 = normal price

it is a good FYI but not a bargain

    • Yes I think you are right, technically. To me this is a bargain in the true sense of the word and all though this isn't news to me as I'd already read the details on Engadget, it will be news and thereby of interest and benefit to many. However, as you say, according to what's previously gone on in Ozbargains (i'm tempted to refer to the rules but won't given that i've never read them) this is standard price and not a bargain.

So as pedantic, disingenious and unjust as I believe it would be, this listing ought to be removed, or the definition of what constitutes a bargain ought to be changed. Either way, let's get some consistency here.

  • =/ why are we the only country still paying over 300 for a ps3, it was ment to be globally $250 for the 160g version

    info here: http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/16/ps3-price-cut-to-250/

    • +2

last time I checked we are not US, EU or JAP:

'It's now $249.99 in the U.S., €249.99 in Europe and ¥24,980 in Japan'

But Euro and AUS are pretty much on par

  • +8

Not a bargain since RRP is $349. By 22nd August, most places will have it below the RRP.

For one its a joke for us to pay over $100 than what it is in the US. And secondly, it is a joke for EBgames to put it at $1 below RRP.

    • Yeah normal price RRP drop, should be in forum rather than a deal.

    • Agreed.

  • +10

    JB has done it again
    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/games/sony/play-station/ps3/

    $349 - includes 2 free games + HDMI cable

    • +1

Have no idea if any of those games are any good but that sounds more like a deal to me.

    • Standard price so technically not a bargain as before, but in the true sense of the word this is a great deal. All 3 of those games have their merit I'd say, AC 2 in particular.

So it's GAME's move now. I predict a lacklustre offering from them, but hope to be pleasently surprised.

Do we think that there will be an official bundle for Xmas? Maybe a Resistance 3 or Uncharted 3 bundle, if so there'd be announcing it before long I'd be thinking. A bundle with either of those games for $349 would be a great deal.

When they released the Slim Dick Smiths bundled the highly anticipated Arkham Asylum which many then sold on ebay for around $80. As I already own a PS3 and far too many games it would be great to get a bundle with a premium game simply to on sell the game or trade it in.

      • +1

"When they released the Slim Dick"

        • for the love of Liberace, I hope you're a chick

  • +3

Anyone notice on the eb games website it states "limited offer or while stocks last" sounds like it's marketing by eb games that will return to 'normal' price … It's not been slashed as a regular everyday price …fail …

Yep us Australian's been ripped off again…

  • Not really a bargain, good post to get the info on the price drop out there, but let's wait a few days before we start posting deals.

  • Australia gets screwed they drop it to 250 in the us and decide 350 is a great price to drop it to in Aus.

    Bullshit, I'm well pissed

    /rant

  • +2

Seriously this is only $1 off RRP, The JB HiFi deal is way better and I'm sure by the 22nd other companies will have good deals too. Remove this senseless promotion for EB games from the top deals…

    Cheaper here :D

but this price drop is more of an announcement than a bargain.

  • already in forum, more a dup post then.

  • +6

Everyone saying this is not a Bargain should look at what this site is designed to do save people money. Anyone that was looking at buying one of these on the weekend would have paid around the $499 price now if the same person saw this website they would know that if they wait two more days they get $150 off which is a bargain price to me.

I think this bargain should have been for the Playstation 3 in general not for EB as we all know EB almost never has bargains.

    • +1

true its a bargain until 22 august

also i think JBHIFI deal is better
since they have a few games at the same price

    • Yes, I agree. This post is in the 'spirit' of OzBargain, it's alerting people to something which will save them lots of money, even it won't be a 'rare' opportunity.

  • Rip off from EB.

  • +7

Has anyone said 'fark EB?'. Because fark EB.

    • FARK EB.

      feels good :D

  • +1

Why is the OP doing free advertising for EB?

  • +2

How are they still charging even 350 for this? It doesn't seem to offer much more than my original ps3 with 500gb and kmeaw.

    • +1

I reckon. The size of the harddisk doesn't matter anymore as ppl can upgrade it themselves.

      • +1

it's not the size that matters, it's how you use it

        • slim or phat

        • That's what she said and you believed. :p

  • Giving this a negative.
This is $1.95 lower then the new standard price, not a bargain.
Anyone buying a PS3 this late in the game (har-har) would be better off waiting for retailers to bundle in a few things or a lower price (like DSE with the 3DS).

  • GAME have released their pricing

    http://www.game.com.au/playstation-3-320gb-plus-move-console…

$1 less than EB, great. But the 320gb bundle is rather good although not for those that already have the bundled items, which I do. So looks like there's room to have some nice alternaitve bundles on the 320gb version.

  • -1

    Haters gonna hate.

The JB deal is really good though.

    • -1

Eh this isn't a bargain, typical EB fashion they are selling at over-inflated RRP……

There's already been several examples posted showing better offers!

  • If I buy the 160GB can I just upgrade the hard drive myself?

    • +1

yeah, 2.5" 9mm height one, don't buy the 12mm ones

  • not really a bargain, but i would say the post was rather informing people of a general price cut (just take out the EB bit)

  • Oh MY GOOOOOOOD~~ I just bought the 320G in JB Hi Fi for $599 on 07/08/11, less than 2 weeks~
Dear all, is it possible to get the difference refund from JB? I know when the ipad decrease the price, people can get the difference back~~~
    Really upset~~~

  • u can only ask - they might chuck u a game or two - just a thought

  • not a bargain considering JBhifi deal and the other store deals which should come in the next few days.

  • +1

Ozbargain civil war? This is one of the most divisive bargains I have seen over here.

    • can't believe already have 31+ves, must be from EB staffs :D

      • Weird how the minority are the most vocal

  • $1.95 below RRP.
    Pufff…

  • Big W will probably bring it in at around $320 or $330 because Big W are known to do things like that.
I'm surprised with the strength of the AUS$ though that the RRP wasn't set at $299. Then again, Australian retail pricing has never made much sense.

  • "Was $500" They say.
I swear I remember seeing 160gb models going for $350 late last year.
That's what I got mine for. (Well not including the $80 discount from a nescafe promo posted here.)

    • yer i got a PS3 320gb for $487 with GT5 just after it was released and that was $120 on its own…..

  • not really a bargain.

  • Was just at JB at macquarie shopping centre looking for a replacement ps3 as my 40gb fat ps3's bd/dvd drive stopped reading discs yesterday. Replacement drive is about 50-100 from ebay delivered.

One or the friendly staff in the Apple section advised the ps3's will have 100 price drop next week and stated i could buy today and get a refund next week. Didn't state price as its an unadvertised price drop.

      • It's widely advertised. Sony is not being secretive about it, nor are retailers.

      • They won't refund you IMO, usually these things work on rebates. Any refund would be out of their pocket unless it was sold after 22/8.

      • I'm guessing he is struggling to make budget and saw an opportunity for an easy $400ish.
