Best Credit Card for Point Collections - Massive Expenses Coming up

Hi,

I have a lot of expenses coming up for my wedding and I'm looking for the best credit card to sign up for.

Ideally velocity, but happy with QFF too. I'm currently holding the AMEX platinum velocity and westpac velocity.

Browsing around, seems like this is the best deal currently? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/503431

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

I would focus on AMEX cards, and/or cards that are officially affiliated with Qantas. Less than 1 year ago AMEX increased the amount of QFF points their cards yielded per dollar spent.

    Check this site out:

    https://www.creditcardcompare.com.au/frequent-flyer-credit-c…

ALSO, if it's a bit of a 'one off' situation (optimistically speaking) re huge expenses (as you suggest re wedding), maybe get a NEW card with great points benefits that waives the 'annual fee' for the first year… pocket the points for the wedding expenses… then cancel the card before the annual fee for the next year is due. Do wait until a few months after the wedding though, to ensure that your points 'crash through'…

Also note that bit at the top of the website I have linked to that says:

'Get 55,000 bonus Qantas Points when you apply online, are approved and spend $3,000 on your new Card within the first 3 months.'

    That's quite a decent 'sign-up bonus' …

Also note this, in that same part of the website I have linked to:

'$450 Qantas Travel Credit each year. (Conditions Apply)'

That would likely be applicable, if you are travelling for your honeymoon… or any other reason within about 9 months of applying for the card.

    • thanks, will give that site a browse.

Tangential, but I'd think twice about collecting VFF points. Virgin have been running on losses for years in Australia, passenger numbers falling, and cash starting to dwindle without any strong leadership. Your VFF points might become worthless very soon.

I used to like Virgin, but their award availability is horrible, they hardly have any international routes (just LA, HK and now Tokyo), so they're basically a domestic airline unless you fly to those destinations regularly. QFF points are a better bet especially given that you can redeem them 1:1 with preferred partners as well (e.g. Emirates).

using VFF for SQ isn't too bad. can also convert to SQ but u obv lose a bit.
I think it is wise to have both VFF and QFF :)

Yeah, the plan is to convert VFF to SQ. :)

  • ANZ has the Freq Flier black promo which gives 120k QFF and $275 cash back with a 4k spend over 3months going on at the moment

    • That's what the OP has already mentioned.

      • ah i didnt click the link

  • How about 100K ANZ Rewards points which can be converted to ~60K VFF during one of the promotion transfer periods.

Or 75K VFF points with the ANZ Travel Rewards card?

Hi mate, I recommend the Citi Visa Signature card, worth the hassle for the low $49 first year fee and the 100k QFF points

    • Yeap I second this one as a great points earner if you have a lot of spend coming up.
