My first post, take it easy on the comments guys.

Target Nova Santoku or Chefs Stainless Steel Knife 18cm $2 at Target Casey Central. Nice little knives my mom and mum in law will be happy to receive. They are very light so not sure how long they’ll last but $2.

The 18cm is not on the website however here’s the link for the chef’s and bread knife:

“My first post, take it easy on the comments guys.”

You may or may not get sliced here.

That's a cutting edge deal you posted right there.

      • +6

chop chop or it's gone ~~

    • +2

Like the cut of your gib mate

      • What's a gib jib?

  • +13

You may have to forgive our blunt comments.

  • +16

Nice find. definitely a cut above the rest

  • +10

    No sharp comments

  • not sure how long they’ll last

Neither are we, since "Stainless steel" is pretty vague. There's over 150 different standard grades of stainless steel, and they all vary widely in performance. Only some are good for knife making. Ones that hold a sharp edge tend to rust more easily, and ones that don't rust easily tend to blunt more easily - only a select few grades are good at both.

I suppose if it lasts 3 months is still as good "value" as an $80 knife that lasts 10 years.
Shame honing steels are not $2 also…

    • I have a 20year old victorinox large knife that I use every day and it still looks like new. It was $200 in 2000.

      • +1

        link please?

      • -5

        A 20 year old knife that was $200 in 2000? That's 20000c! It's sure to be worth $200000 in 2 million AD!

      • You just made me feel old with that comment.

    • +1

Only lasts "3 months" you must be using it for chopping firewood. It's a kitchen knife and will be fine using as intended.

      • +1

Of course! It was just an example of how this knife could still be good value from even as a "throwaway society", which is what it would be if you decided never to sharpen it.

My past experiences with cheap knives from aldi using cheap stainless steel is that they go blunt very quickly.

If you sharpen it would definitely have a longer useful lifespan, but $2 certainly does not include a sharpener or honing steel.

It's a kitchen knife and will be fine using as intended.

Yes, but how long for? If you don't sharpen it, how long would you expect it to stay sharp?

Edit: My comment got negged? Wow.

    • +1

Assuming that the information pinchers has kindly taken the time to educate us with here is true, why would anyone (let alone two people) neg pinchers' post? The mind boggles. If there is some inaccuracy in what pinchers has said, then that should at least be mentioned as a polite 'reply' in conjunction with anyone negging his/her post. Inexplicable negs like this simply function to discourage experts from kindly educating us here on OzB with the information they possess on any given topic/re any given product. To any rational-minded human all of this would be obvious …

You could add the bread knife to the post as well.

These knives re actually pretty good for the price once you sharpen them. Have had one of the "chefs" knives for about a year and a half, holds up pretty well. That said it absolutely does not compare to any of my more expensive knives buy hey, not everyone can afford to drop a few hundred on a single knife.

    • +9

Sweetheart, dear, darling, with a name like that I won’t be arguing with you 😱🔪⚰️

    • What about compared to OzBargains favourite Global knife set?

      • +1

They're leagues apart. That said my globals tend to lose thwir edge faster than most of my other knives.

        • Jenny, do your Globals look anything like this? It is a line of pitting/rusting between the handle and the blade. These are ~19years old, but have been like this a while.

          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/233328/76330/global_cl…

          • @hodgeheg: More spot rust rather than a line. I suspect the line of rust is from being stored while wet? Just a guess.

        • I love how you tell us about your other knives but don't actually tell us the name

          • +1

@montorola: I've used a few different brands. Global, Masahiro, Shun, Wursthof and some other brand I forget the name of make up my main set of knives and would generally be the brands I'd recommend going for. I've also used Baccarat and Scanpan knives (lol) in the past s well as the "forever sharp knife".

I usually use my Masahiro santoku for every day stuff, but maybe a Wursthof chefs knife would be a more common starting point.

      • +1

Globals = garbage. Spend the money and get a Wusthof (classic range) or Mac knife. So much nicer to use, you will look forward to cooking.

        • +1

          will look forward to cooking.

          great gift for wife!

          • @djprima: “And that’s when I killed him your honour”. We’ll you have given her a weapon :).

    • +3

I don’t skimp on knives. I have two sets of Wusthof knives. One set is over 20 years old and they are still going strong. You need a knife with good balance. For me these are the sort of thing you have for a picnic or in your AirBnB property. Where there is a risk it will get lost.

    • What do you sharpen them with?

      • Japanese whetstones of varying grit.

        • Honestly I don't expect a blade like this to hold much of an edge, even a ceramic pull-through should be good enough to keep it in usable condition.

  • +1

I use these and sharpen them with the Global mino sharp shapener. I have a 10 year old global knife which is comparable but has a little more heft compared to these. Paid $120 back in the day for the global.

    Sharp deal.

  • This is a Target brand right, same as Anko is to KMart?

    • Yeah, both knives are "Target" brand.

  • +2

thanks OP, my wife doesn't like knifes that would make her fingers bleed if she cuts on them. these knifes seem to be a good fit for her.

    • +5

The sharper the blade the less likely you are to cut yourself because you are less likely to slip. Maybe she needs to work on her technique.

      • +2

maybe i need a new wife who would listen

        • Good luck with finding the new wife. Wish you wouldn't end up from the frying pan to the fire, lol!

        • Having a look at a few videos, on technique, helps. I’ve changed where I put my fingers since I watched a couple of those. In my case I lost a great chunk of skin, from a knuckle, using my big microplane grater. I went out and bought a cut proof glove, after that. I’m also much more careful.

        • No such thing

  • Knives are not appreciated as presents by some people/cultures… just fyi :) (superstition maybe).
Personally I would be happy to receive a good quality knife as a present especially considering the cheap tat I've been "gifted" by certain relatives…

    • +2

I read "cheap tat" as "cheap tatt" and pictured your relatives forcing you to get a bad tattoo, that you would then maybe slice off with your $2 Target Santoku Knife.

  • +1

Apart from getting good knives the secret is to look after them.
    A) Keep them in a knife block, to avoid hitting the blade against other things.
    B) Make sure they are kept sharp but don’t overwork the edge.
    C) wash, dry and put away immediately after use. Don’t put in the dishwasher.

    • A) can be replaced by use the honing steel regularly.

      • Nah, it is better to protect the knife than trying to “repair” it.

    • wash, dry and put away immediately after use.

Washed up two after I bought them and left them on the dish rack. Went to put them away the next morning and one already had a spot of rust.

  • +1

I finished the stock in Perth CBD - sorry in advanced

  • +1

Strathpine has some bread knives left and maybe 1 or 2 of the other knives left. I grabbed a few. Plenty of other things on sale as well including dinnersets ($15) and frypans ($5)

  • Doukyuusei?

  • Act civic store had the bread knifes and chef ones at $2 among other $2 utensils… wasn’t after the nova knifes so didn’t buy any but they had about 10 of each left

  • Lots of santoku and bread knives still available at Rhodes NSW

  • +1

    Are these genuine?

    • Genuine Target-branded knives? Sure.
