This is not a bargain - it is selling for roughly the same price on the Soda Stream site.

If by roughly the same price you mean without six syrups and two extra bottles then yes.

  • Kmart had a clearance of a model called the genus or genisis a couple of months ago for $28 and had 2 extra bottle packs for $5 and syrups for $3 each…
So I am sure they do it to rotate stock..
Bought one but still have it in the box as the refill tanks are stupid prices to refill/exchange.

Soda Stream seem to be a returning fad. We used it 10+ years ago and you do get sick of the device and consumables (esp. running out). We always put more flavoring in than they 'recommend' or they taste too weak. I also seem to remember the original model (maybe 20 years ago) having a manual-pump handle so you didn't need to buy carbonating gas bottles - obviously not enough profit in that for the manufacturer.

In the end it seems easier to buy 1.25 sodas on special in bulk.

    • yeah 60 litre gas cylinder, 6 standard syrups & the drink maker for $99 is hardly a bargain (think about the time n energy put to make the drink n maintain the equipment). Also seen occasional sales for this drink maker at K mart.
I normally just buy from wollies when they have sale ($1) for 1.25L pepsi. This will get me 123.75L for $99 :). Last week I seen 2L pepsi lime for $1.69.

      • Think about all the plastic those pepsi bottles are generating.

If you regularly drink carbonated water then this can potentially save landfill. It is not especially cheap (costs 50c to carbonate 1L).

Then you can also make strange carbonated drinks not sold in supermarkets. Carbonated milk, anyone? Or homemade carbonated lemonade?

It is very easy to use and no cleaning involved if you only carbonate water.

        • It might be nice to just make regular soft drinks, only with 60% flavoring. Ever since I turned 25 I've found soft drinks too sweet. Or you could do stevia sweetened softdrinks. Etc. Would be nice to have super fizzy on tap, although I wonder the Eco footprint of the canisters.

Did anyone else used to call this the fart machine?

yep. Carbonate to two farts and you are ready to go! ;)

You mean I have to buy your syrups, use my own bottles, make the damned stuff myself and it's still more expensive than the (surprisingly good) Aldi diet cola?
At least they let me keep the bottle :)

  • If anyone gets this, I thoroughly recommend their Vanilla Cola syrup. Much better than their standard Cola, plus considerably cheaper to make than real Vanilla Coke.

    • sorry, but i really hate vanilla+coke. so ill be staying away from that one.

  • Can you put cordial into the syrup bottles and use that instead? Or even plain lemon juice?

    • +1

Yes you can. I often carbonate the water, and mix 50/50 with fruit juices for a healthier alternative to soda drinks

'Genesis' drink maker…so if you have too much you'll be feeling full of air tonight?

  • So you make the drink up & then add the bubbles? I wonder if it works for homebrew?
make up a large keg, cold chill to get rid of the yeast, then dispense to bottles & carbonate.

    • No. Fermentation <> Carbonation.
