That's one expensive and fancy Raspberry Pi :O
If this is what you are after this is great price, but Google Cloud/Raspberry Pi/Old Laptop are probably all more cost effective means running Unifi Controller

    • +3

Sounds like it would be cheaper but less user friendly. Does the raspberry pi software also run Unifi Protect? As this is the main reason for purchasing this unit. (Simple setup of poe cameras, storage of video footage with remote access of recordings).

Ps. I didn’t neg you. Genuinely interested how you could run all that this has with cheaper equipment with the same ux.

    • The amount of power you would use with an old laptop compared to this would cost far more than just buying this. Pi isn't a lot cheaper if you have to buy the Pi a case for the Pi, a power supply, an external USB3 1tb hdd etc etc. It all adds up.

      • +1

        Pi 4 - $59
        Pi PSU - $15
        Case - $15
        1TB WD Purple - $80
        3.5" powered enclosure - $30
        Total - $200.

It does add up, just not to $288.

        • +1

Until you realise how much better this product is in comparison, I’d be happy to spend the extra $88 for sure.

        • +2

It's a tad more complicated than that. You need to factor in a UPS of some description if going like for like. One of the advantages of this is there's a built in battery to do a safe power down in an outage. Without a UPS the Controller by many reports is susceptible to corrupting itself when unexpectedly killed. For $80 or so you can get something like an Eaton 3s that will likely keep the gear up for a long time, including devices other than just the Pi (e.g. a switch + router too).

The HDD is perhaps a bit debatable for a self build and could be a cost saving. The Cloud Key has the HDD there for use with UniFi Protect which isn't available as a standalone service, so you won't be using that on a self built version. As such if you're just after the controller you're really just up for a 16 or 32GB SD card rather than a hard drive to installer the controller on. Realistically the Pi might be better compared to the Cloud Key 2 that comes without the HDD. Unsure if the HDD can be used as network storage if not being used for Protect, but if that's the case 1TB isn't an awful lot.

The Protect can also run off POE. If you want the Pi to do that then there's a further cost for the PoE hat (but subtract the AC adapter).

There's probably an intangible cost to many to having it all available as an all-in-one.

So yeah, a bit more to it. I'd say that most people's Pi setup would more closely align with the Cloud Key Gen 1 which is closer to $110. Namely no need for storage, no battery backup etc. That comparison puts the costs very close.

          • @Smigit: I'm all in favour of the Unifi device!

I only mentioned the HDD just to make it like for like really. Also instead of a dedicated UPS for the Pi you could either have a powerbank that supports power pass through (powers device as it charges) as the PI runs off 5v - or you could get a UPS hat for the PI that would integrate the battery backup much like the cloud key, however this would close the gap on that extra $88 pretty quickly. I'm all for using a Pi if you have budget constraints as it will perform wonderfully, but I'd never compare it to a fully featured product when using the bare budget level for the Pi.

            • @AmperSand: Yeah they both have a use case and audience. Another plus for the PI is it can host other things at the same time, Pi-Hole or whatever. Depends what you want to do.

    • +3

So tell me how do I run Protect on the Pi?

  • Sorry for the lazy post (haven’t Googled) but can you use any IP cameras with this or do they have to be Ubiquiti?

    • +2

I don’t think so… although maybe someone else has figured out a way.

I was comparing an Arlo pro setup, and figured I could run this, a unifi switch and a few unifi g3af cameras for the same money, minus the subscription costs, battery recharging and have more secure footage.

      • Regarding the security of the system, a lot of the reviews of the Apps are criticising the need for a US portal cloud logins and blocking local access to cameras without it.

I'd arrived at the Unifi system as we have inadequate internet for cloud storage but the multiple bad reviews are discouraging.

        • Regarding the security of the system, a lot of the reviews of the Apps are criticising the need for a US portal cloud logins and blocking local access to cameras without it

I assume this relates to the Arlo?

      • How much did you get the G3AF cameras for? They’re $380ish each at Wireless 1, so 3 of those is almost $1200 alone.

        • +1

That’s the pro for 380, the standard g3 bullet is 220, but eBay codes previously have had the 2 I’ve bought around the 180 mark. The g3 flex is another good option around the 110 mark.

I’m also keen for their doorbell which should come out this year, and integrate into the system.

    • +1

      No Ubi cameras only.

Fantastic device, being able to be powered from POE is great. I've swapped my hard drive out to a 5tb I shucked from a Seagate portable drive.

Running a few cameras with it as well as a few waps and a router all nicely tied together

    • Nice. Have you got it set up with always recording or motion detection +- 5seconds?

      • +2

Unifi protect records 24/7 in very low res but does motion detections as event and in full resolution.
This is the default, I have just adjusted my motion zone sensitivity to be a little more sensitive.

I haven't logged into the settings in a while so those could be new features? I know unifi video has this ability - but was a large gripe people had with protect when it launched. It has gotten a lot better with new updates always coming through.

EDIT: Just logged in to see record options as Always, Never or Motion are available. Mines set to always. In the past these weren't available

  • +1

Really happy with my Cloud Key setup.

Unifi protect is great with it's timelapse scrolling. Only negative I have is the cloud key gets damn hot! Supposedly there is a mod to help reduce this though.

Thanks OP. Bought one after umming and aahing…
    :)
Good price for this little unit.
Will start now replacing my Swann cameras with the unifis and can get rid of my GCP instance currently running my unifi controller

  • if you've got a home server or nas, just run it in a docker

  • Back up to $319.
