  • This vs the NVIDIA Shield 2019 for Plex?

    • Definitely have to recommend the shield 2019 as it has some great tech behind it's AI upscaling and works great as a plex server. Although I don't think they're available just yet and would be at a much higher cost, likely 5 times the price here.

    • Shield - if you are looking to set up PMS on it. If you need purely for streaming then any device is good -Roku / firestick / Voda - all will work well

      • Do they all have proper support for atmos, hdr, etc? i.e. can they all properly play everything?

        • Definitely recommend you steer clear of Vodafone TV as HDR and surround sound codecs are extremely flakey and don't work on all apps. There are barely any configuration options in the menu to let you adjust sound/picture settings. Mine is gathering dust. Even basic 4k video file playback looks quite bad compared to th TV's built in media player.

        • I use my Shield (non 2019) to stream HDR Netflix and Amazon to my Hisense OLED 55" and also Atmos via my receiver from downloads through Plex.

    • +2

The older shield is pretty damn amazing too

      • Its great but bloody Netflix (or Nvidia) won't update the App to support Atmos in the older Shield.
Only Shield 2019 supports Atmos in Netflix.

Atmos works in Plex though in the older Shield.

Where can we find the shield 2019 for $52?

      • -4

Why you asking me? You should post this in the forums

        • +7

LOL, he isn't asking that, he is highlighting the cost difference between the two devices. the question you should be asking, is the Shield worth XXX amount more than the Roku player, are you going to use those extra features?

          • @wisc: But money is not an issue, that's why I was just asking for a performance comparison

    • +2

One is $57 the other about $250 to $300. Not really a comparison

  • I got roku ultra without much knowledge. After setting it up, there were no local Aus apps. I could only make use of Netflix. There is no prime but there was apple tv.

    • I have had Roku ultra for the last few years and have been using Amazon prime Aus. You should be able to download prime app and login.

    • May depend on what you're using for a proxy/VPN. Check the settings and it may have an option to change the region for Amazon.

    • I got Prime app on my Roku Ultra, dont use it much but it's there and works fine.

    • Running a Roku 4K Prime I picked up in the US Black Friday sales last November for $72 AUS and happily running Prime, Disney+, Netflix, NHL and some other stuff. Only one not available is Stan, but we're dropping that anyway.

Which reminds me, I must set up that VPN.

      • Can you stream any of free to air channels on Roku? TIA.

        • +1

          No.

      • I dont know what I dod wrong, but cannot get prime and disney+. Searched their entire store and via the mobile app too.
Did you set up US account or registered here?

        • Don't recall being asked for an address here. It's only been an issue trying to access US only content, not the apps themselves.

    • Subscribe to dns4me.net and you can unlock foreign streaming services with ease. Just have to put a DNS address in your router settings. I've got two of these, one from the US and one from the UK. The only difference is BBC iPlayer will not work on the US one as they can tell from the Roku MAC ID that it is not a UK device that is sold in the UK.

  • Any idea if this contains the Apple TV app?

    • Current roku store does have an Apple app which will play things from your apple account. Also if you read the description of the deal on Amazon, it actually says it does.

      • Do you know if it has apple tv + app?

  • Theoretically this should play 4k content via Plex without needing to transcode on the plex server shouldn't it?

    • This is a player, won't trancode plex

      • +2

If it has PGS subtitles which 4K content often uses, then only Shield has direct play (e.g. no Transcoding) for PGS Subtitles.

All other players will force Plex to transcode the video for PGS Subtitles.

        • Bummer, thanks.

  • Can I use this to stream from my android phone ? I have an S10e

    • No it's a streaming stick for a telly

  • -1

Can this replace my existing Telstra provided Roku please and what more value will I get if I buy and replace this (assuming I can buy and simply replace this with existing Telstra Roku). Thanks in advance.

    • From what I can see all that information is provided in the link.

    • +3

You'll probably lose the Australian services eg iView, rugby, afl etc. This really isn't a replacement for the Telstra TV.

      • Many thanks..I shall leave it.

  • Vodafone TV seems like a reasonable comparison to this which is fully compatible.

    About the same price too.

    • I agree VTV definitely a better mainstream choice for average user at $72 including TV tuner

  • It says item doesn't ship to Australia. Anyone else seeing this?

  • For anyone interested, the Roku has a 100/10 nic.

Which means the roku may have some issue with streaming a full rip of a 4K movie over the local lan (as their bitrates can get above 100Mbps sometimes, and up to 200Mbps burst).

This isn't an issue for most ppl though, as I doubt most people rip 4K movies anyway.

Nvidia shield has a gig nic btw.

    • Aside from the NIC, does this mean that this Roku can also stream pass through Atmos or DTS-HDMA?
My Vodafone TV will not pass through any high res audio > DTS. I've tried 4 or 5 apps including Kodi and just cannot get it to work.

    • Is there actually any low cost media player device that can play 4K rips with HDR, and pass-through Atmos and DTS-HDMA to a receiver in Kodi that is actually known to work 100%? Or is the Shield 2019 the only one?

      • An old desktop PC with a nVidia 1660 card works fine running Kodi in Windows 10, providing you use the special builds in the thread below - note that it's only a matter of time until support is in the release builds and in LibreElec (if you want to boot directly into Kodi without having Windows installed).

        https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-decode-gpu-support…

        • A 1660 seems to cost $300+?? Does this mean that a cheap all in one device doesn't exist for what I want to do?

          • @Punkboy: See the forum.kodi thread linked above for a comprehensive list, I mistakenly linked a 1650 card above :-)

        • plus the cost of running it 24X7 :)

        Check out this device.
        More info here:
        Works out $135 delivered

        • Don't think there was a link with more info here

        • Hey I think I saw your Odroid posts on Whirlpool. Are you going to buy one through Ameridroid? Any idea what their warranty is?

          • @Punkboy: That was me. I already got mine direct from Odroid. Not sure about Ameridroid warranty

            • @hen dawg: How are you finding it?

              • @Punkboy: It's great! Does everything I need very well including streaming 4k HDR files from my NAS. Just need to get my Logitech Harmony remote setup which may take some fiddling. (Currently using TV remove via CEC so have to unplug/plug in to turn on)
I use my Sony X95 TV for all smarts: Netflix, Youtube etc

                • @hen dawg: I've ordered one. Hopefully it doesn't become yet another box that just doesn't quite cut it or dies quickly. There are a few complaints that they are lasting three months or so and hard kernel only have the months warranty lol.

                  • @Punkboy: I can't speak for the hardware but at least the software development will be extremely dependable

    • Ummmm I don't think this Rocku even has a nic? Appears to be wifi only?

  • +1

Now the Price is dropped to US $29. Is this good price?

  • is there any restrictions in Aus for this?

  • how does this compare to telstra tv both based on roku. are you able to cast any more apps to tv screen other than just you tube?
