Microsoft Surface Book 2 13.5" i5/8GB RAM/256GB SSD - $1757 + Free Click & Collect @ Harvey Norman

180

Had my laptop stolen a few days ago and needed to replace it. Luckily for me, this Mates Rates deal at Harvey Norman came up. Hope it helps somebody who is in the market for a Surface Book 2.

Delivery costs an extra $7.95 from my understanding.

    Same @ Good Guys, $1757.60 @ JB Hi-Fi

Better off the JB and discounted gift cards. 5% off would make it $1669.72, or an $87.88 saving

2 years old now so I feel you could do a lot better tech-spec wise than a Surface Book. Expect 4k, Thunderbolt 3 and an RTX graphics version released this year.

  • Why does it cost so much?

    • +3

It's very thin + light, good battery, active pen display, detachable keyboard etc

This isn't a great price but the Surfaces are nicer than average laptops

      Because it's a quality product.

My gen 1 Surface Book is still going strong. They’re extremely well made and the best laptops you can buy if you need Windows. I’d say wait a bit if you can gen 3 should be out this year.

  • How is user upgradability-wise?

    • Bad.

Ram soldered, SSD with faffing about.

  • Can anyone comment on the longevity of Surface products?

    • My surface pro 3's battery is rubbish but that aside its not skipped a beat, bit over 5 years old. Pen still works, screens still good, the keyboard still works - i bought a backup and still not opened it.

This has a 1/10 repairability score on iFixit. As soon as your warranty is gone, you're screwed

    • My surface book is a few years old and it still holds its charge pretty well.

They're impossible to repair when things go wrong. I had a firmware update brick my Surface Pro 2 entirely. There was nothing that could be done but send the device for replacement. All data gone just that easy. Backup, backup, and backup again.

I bought one of these and sold it within 3 months. Absolute crap. I had the i7 version with gtx 1050 and 4k display. It ran slower than my 2012 MacBook which I had laying around.

Do yourself a favor and avoid this heap of trash. The thermal throttling is ridiculous due it's 'passive cooling'

Just Google surfacebook 2 performance issues and you will find an endless list.

Sorry to OP but that's just my opinion, may e I had a bad one? :P

    • My one is the same but runs pretty good. It can even run 3d games on it. You'd better do a factory reset to see if it could be improved.

  • Please note the i5 version does not has GTX 1050 graphic card built in the keyboard, only the i7 version has it.

Get a Surface Laptop 3, faster 10th gen CPU (vs 8th gen), better repair-ability, and slightly lower price for the same i5/8GB/256GB configuration.

You only lose out in the graphics department, but if you're using something graphics intensive, you would benefit much better from looking at other laptops anyway and stay FAR away from the Surface Book which have 4 year old GTX 1050 Graphics Cards in them.

EDIT: Just remembered that the Surface Book's with the i5 don't even come with the dedicated graphics card, so now you lose out EVERYWHERE, I actually feel bad for people buying this :(

  • Considered this, got my kid to activate 10% off Microsoft education bonus with valid edu.au email. Took coupon into HN to buy, was told bad luck, not valid now as it’s already on special, so I walked out which happens often when I go to HN. Happy I did anyway as it’s over 1.5kg and Microsoft have ensured that you cannot upgrade RAM or SSD. Bought a Lenovo c930 instead, 2 in 1, FHD IPS, only 1.2kg (important for me), 16gb RAM, 256ssd which I can upgrade when needed and I paid less than $1000

    • Where did you buy at that price? Looked online and they seem to cost around 2000
