Air Canada: Los Angeles Return from Melbourne $797, Brisbane $799, Sydney $799 (Mar-Sep) @ FlightScout

680

Air Canada has tickets under the magic $800 figure!

They are all via Vancouver, Canada (rated one of the best airports in the world), and range in dates from Mar-Sep.

Note, the flightscout site seems to sometimes be saying slightly higher (eg Melbourne) but when I clicked through, the prices are as I've said above.

Air Canada has a really bad rep, but at least if you're delayed significantly you can get compo. Friends Mrs was delayed back to Aus by 26hours, ended up getting more than the cost of her ticket back via Air Passenger Protection Regulations.

Flew Air Canada to Toronto (Economy): notes
      - old kind of plane from Syd-Yvr (Vancouver) but kept us in the air, not too bad. Staff were nice. Meals were average as expected. Tea/coffee was horrible as expected.
      - Entertainment was a tad limited, but killed quite a few hours.
      - YVR-YYZ (Toronto) regional planes absolutely suck. Was crammed in tight with no AVOD or meals even though we paid for them and were expected to pay again. In 5 hours or so, the water cart came around once. We brought this up with staff and they were nothing but rude. Eventually the head steward came and said they would get "unlock" the AVOD and give us a light meal/snack. Didn't see them for an hour and the next time "sorry AVOD is broken and we've run out of food" right as they deliver food to the people across from us that they've paid for.

Flight back was delayed 5 hours, which caused the YVR-SYD flight to be pushed back also which in turn left us circling around for an hour above SYD waiting for an opportunity to land.

1/4 flights were okay. I can believe the bad rep now.

Yep, rarely hear anything good about them in FB aviation groups.

    • Flew them once, never again.

Could you get off in Vancouver instead of going to LA? Then catch the return flight back from LA as normal or vice versa?

    • Yeah Vancouver to Seattle is a better option for me. Am also wondering as I'd rather jump off there and make my way there, much better than LA

    • +2

Nope. As with any airline, if you don't get on any leg of the flight, all remaining legs on your ticket are cancelled :/

      • Its a strange system how it is cheaper to fly further. Surely its better for the airline if you get off early and not complete the journey. Curious as to how the structure works

        • sometimes it's to fill the plane on say, the SYD to YVR leg, they offer it cheaper. There's a great writeup here https://www.godsavethepoints.com/skiplagged-travel-trick-sto… - and skiplagged.com tries to feature flights doing this, but they're US centric.

          • @beatthatflight: so, how do you know which flight is allowed to get off from the 1st stop?
            is it written anywhere?

@koali: Generally in your PNR (Booking reference) it'll say you're flying from A to C, maybe stopping at B enroute. You can only disembark at C. Tickets are usually one way from A to C, or return from A to C, and the intermediate steps don't count.

The other trick is if you're getting off at B and forgoing the rest, you want to make sure you only have carry-on luggage, otherwise your bags are carrying on to C…

        • Because airlines what the plane to be full to make profits.
If the airline hub airport is near a different popular destination. They will compete aggressively on cost. There needs to be an incentive to fly to lax via Vancouver, if they make the ticket $80 dollars cheaper than the direct flight Syd-lax. some sucker will take it.

  • What's a good return price for Vancouver from Sydney? The best prices I can currently find for travel in June/July is approx. $1400 per person.

Depends if you want direct or not. I'm seeing Philippine Airlines is under a grand on a lot of dates currently on my site(can't link without violating rules) but that's including a stop in Manila.

    • With VA a little over $1k, maybe $1100. These would be VA to LAX and then AC from LAX-YVR.

I can't comment on other airilnes as I only fly VA to the US. Though I know some of the lesser well known airlines fly via Asia for under $1000.

  • It’s a shame one can’t disembark at Vancouver and skip the LA leg :D. I’ve just returned from my trip to Canada. What a great destination to visit guys. Been to Toronto and Vancouver. Liked Vancouver more as there are just some many activities to do in or around the city. One can go hiking, skiing, ice skating, snowshoeing, etc. either in or near the city. Definitely recommend to visit Vancouver over LA. I’d love to go there again.
