[Unobtainable Deal] Holden Final Run Out Sale: Trax ~$13,000, Equinox ~$20,000 + More

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Important stuff from the link

The Holden Trax city SUV is almost half price, with discounts ranging from $10,000 to $11,000, bringing this $23,990 model to the bargain price of about $13,000

The mid-size Holden Equinox is also a flat rate $10,750 off, or about a third off the price of the base model, bringing it from a bit over $30,000 drive-away to close to $20,000 drive-away.

The Holden Acadia seven-seat family SUV is between $11,500 and $17,000 off, between a quarter and one-third off the price of the car.

The cheapest discount is on the Holden Commodore – $7500 off – while the Astra hatch and sedan that were also discontinued last year have a flat rate of $8500 off to about $12,000 drive-away for the base models.

Additional Info (Thanks Techie4066):

Discounts on driveaway costs. All stock in remaining dealerships is expected to be depleted well before the end of 2020, with some dealers expecting to close by the end of financial year (June 30). Expected discounts from the start of March according to dealer bulletin (subject to change):

Holden Colorado (ute) - $13,000 to $17,500 off
Holden Trax (small SUV) - $10,000 to $11,000 off (down to ~$13,000 driveaway)
Holden Acadia (large seven seat SUV) - $11,500 to $17,00 off
Holden Commodore (liftback/tourer/sportwagon) - $7,500 off
Holden Astra (hatch/sedan) - $8,500 off (down to ~$12,000 base model driveaway)
Holden Equinox (medium SUV) - $10,750 off (down to ~$20,000 base model driveaway)

Opinions vary on these vehicles, but do jump on them if you have been in the market and are happy with what's available. Holden will provide servicing and spare parts for the next ten years (through a national aftersales network), ongoing call centre support, will issue recalls where necessary, and will honour existing warranties, guarantees and free scheduled servicing offers.

Mod: Article/bulletin lists the prices as drive away, but the pricing is not final and may be subject to change. As always, the deal may be removed (unobtainable) in the future, if it does not go ahead as (or close to) advertised/listed. Minor changes will be updated.

Mod: The deal become largely unobtainable. See comments. Moved to forums.

  • I suggest you all contact Joshua Dowling at Car advice and get him to point you in the direction of a Dealer where you can purchase those cars at the driveaway prices he has mentioned.(e.g Trax and Astra) He will not be able to because that is FAKE NEWS! Disgraceful, incorrect assumptions on his part.

    • +1

JD is the king of fake news!
We trolled him on a car forum once saying we had placed orders for a very limited HSV and made up some specs. He took it and ran with it lol.

  • Any more info's if this is the real deal?

John Cadogan (Autoexpert on Youtube) has crunched some numbers on the fire sale, taking into account the expected depreciation of a brand that is exiting the market. Shows how much discount you really need to come out in front. Don't get bamboozled by the headline discount alone! Second half of this video here: https://youtu.be/wp5pI7DsRWc

    • John expects these new Holden cars to have about 66% depreciation in the first 3 years. Compared to like 40% off the Toyota, mazda, Hyundai's. Need to negotiate that 30% plus discount buffer at the dealership

    • Not wasting any time watching the self proclaimed "Auto Expert". I don't know how he can spew out so much verbal diarrhea in every video I've seen.

      • +1

Can't argue with that, however his logic seems to be on point here. There's every reason why depreciation will be much higher on regular Holdens in the years to come, so you need to factor that into your calculations. If you flip it after a few years then unless you get a very heavy discount up front you'll be better off with a brand that still exists in the future

        • I agree but also think it's common sense as well. They will drop a lot when they finally close up shop and again when warranties start running out.
If we're talking 66% off say a 57k (rrp plus onroads) Z71 Colorado, it's worth about 20k in 3 years? They're already being picked up for 43-46k drive away. It's only a 45% depreciation to get to that 20k so the sums aren't that far off and the sale hasn't officially started.

  • Just back from the dealer, they can already apply discounts of today!!

    • Got any more details of your interaction?

    • What prices were they giving you?

      • Base model Equinox 20k drive away but only 2 in stock perhaps more coming

        • shit,,im really looking for that particular model as well, have you paid a deposit?any bargaining tip to get more freebies?

          • @angelkulit025: better hurry the steering wheel is too small for me and the 1.5l engine a bit marginal. Uber drivers talking to their banks?

            • @payless69: i might look in to the ltz model and see how low they can give that to me..and iim paying cash so those Uber drivers can stuff themselves

    • yep,,more details please…i am planning to visit 2 local dealership on the weekend and see who can fight for my buckeroos.

    • and which dealership please…

      • I am in Cairns so only a tiny dealer but if serious perhaps take time off and check what is nearby. Senior stuff were nervous I guess they have plenty of changes coming up.

        • I think the smaller dealers that are likely to close up shop at EOFY or thereabouts would be more likely to come to the party than the larger ones that are sticking around. Especially for floor stock.

  • I was looking at the Isuzu MUX to buy but seeing that this potential price drops could occur, the Holden trailblazer is now being looked at. Almost identical cars with some minor cosmetic changes. Parts would be easily readily available so that's a plus as well.

Just spoke to my local dealer in vic,

    $18,100

    I had a bit a of a chuckle,

reckons hes sold a few and all will be gone within 24-48 hours

    • is this for the trax?

    • For what car?

    • Seems about right based on MRP.
Astra R base model in auto is $22490 + stamp duty, rego, ctp, dealer delivery, metallic paint.

I'm sure they will charge for whatever they can get away with right now and use the 8500 discount as a reason.

      • oh, and the quote was for a non metallic paint car, $500 extra apparently

if it supposed to be $8,000 discount ?
        that would make it $13990

        • +1

You havent added in on road costs.
Stamp duty 3%, rego & ctp about $800-900, dealer delivery I'm guessing they will say is $2500.

          Then minus the $8500 discount.

          • @8azinga: fair enough,

the other person who got offered $20k for a equinox seems to be a screaming bargain!

            • +1

@Samsungnote10: That salesman may have thought they were getting these discounts on top of the already discounted prices, maybe a driven demo, and can you trust what people comment on here? We will never know but it is cheap.

              • @8azinga: yes will be interesting to see what prices people are getting now and a bit later

im sure people will be posting up the prices they are getting

            • +1

@Samsungnote10: Would need to see receipts!

caradvice have now backtracked on their claims:

If the discount was applied to the Holden Trax city SUV’s current drive-away price, the savings of $10,000 to $11,000 would bring the $23,990 model to about $13,000 – cheaper than a Hyundai hatchback cost 20 years ago.

However, some Holden dealers claim the discount applies to the full retail price of the car, and so the drive-away offer on this model would be closer to $16,000 to $17,000 drive-away – still a significant saving.

$16,000 for a Trax no thank you.

    • +4

It was pretty obvious it would be off the RRP from the start. The author of the article clearly didnt do his research and many on here dont realise that prices offered before the article were already discount.

      • Herd mentality

    • 500 for a trax no thank you

  • +2

Uber drivers picking up all the BASE LEVEL Trax, Acadia and Equinox for Uber XL jobs lol. They will run down the cars with 300k km in 3-4 years and dump it. $30k tax rebate for them. They are not interested in the Astra and ute so better chance to nab those. According to the Australian rideshare forums a lot of the Uber drivers are at the dealers today paying full discounted price deposits on them.

    • Do you know if Uber drivers get deals on certain cars? Just wondering because while I was in Christchurch recently there seemed to be quite a few Corolla sedans doing Uber. There are also 3 Uber drivers who live close by to me, they each own the same model of car, a Corolla sedan.

  • -4

Colorada seems good since its based on the US Chevy Colorada but it looks like the US has a bigger body but I can't tell exactly. Australia should convert to left hand drive, the world should be on the same side to reduce waste.

    • No… its typical US superiority bullshit. The metric system is better but nope… they stick with imperial.
240v is better and more common worldwide but nope, the USA sticks with 120v.
Most of Europe and Asia is RHD, but nope… the US continues to stick with LHD.

Are you American by any chance?

  • The fun seems to have already begun in Thailand!

    • The new Captiva 1.5 LS Turbo, for instance, was offered at 499,000 baht — down from 999,000 baht.

if currency converting is correct it would seem that a Captiva sells for around $46K. Insanity

      • -3

Captiva is a reliable car. Cousin bought it for $45k top model 11 years ago and still running great with 180k km. Nothing more than yearly service. The interior quality is horrible and cheap though.

        • +2

Your cousin getting a good one doesn't mean the model is reliable. Sample size of 1 vs all the problems reported.

        • +1

No way in the world Craptivas are reliable… Friends have only had trouble with these at low Kay's. All play up before 120000km. Mechanical failure. Timing chain and engine replacements. Not worth any discount. You are buying trouble without a doubt

  • Is there a risk that future insurance premiums will rise to an unacceptable level since repairing work and parts may get expensive? Anyone knows what happened to Opel cars last time?

Anyway, will only consider getting a Holden if the discount is great enough to offset the risks.

  • Holden will continue to support customers in the following ways:

Honour all existing warranties and guarantees
Honour all free scheduled servicing offers
    Ongoing call centre support
Provide servicing and spare parts for at least 10 years

I think approaching the end of the financial year after the initial rush that happened even now including free scheduled servicing offer there will be some great deals on left overs .

I have always hated anonymous downvoting on OzB. Makes it a playground for bullies and trolls.

    • Looks great but still almost 50 grand. Rather get a top of the line Triton.

  • I've found this one at one of the closest dealership near my place

    https://www.southmorangholden.com.au/VehicleDetails/new-2020…

And the guy wouldn't budge on the price advertised and said if i wanted a discounted price, the 7 year free servicing will be taken out plus any other else.

He was also spewing and couldn't believe when i told him about the deal @Payless got which is the base model Equinox for 20k..

I also tried offering him 25 -28k when he ask me what's my offer and he immediately shut me down. =(

    • I remember looking for a Holden Trax from this same store like 2 years ago, they weren't willing to even lower the price by 1k. If they had lowered their price by 2k, I would have bought the car as well. Thank god they rejected it because I found a car I liked even more 3 days later (not Holden).

      • +2

f*** them then.. i will be trying other dealership. Hopefully they wouldn't call me back as i will try to low ball them much further…lol

        • maybe you will get a call near the end/start of EOFY

  • Anyone to talk about Colorado reliability? I'm wondering if the 4x4 scheme is reliable and if they can handle medium 4x4 trails ( the occasional beach drive and the rare mud/river cross).

I was looking into Holden since the 7 year warranty/servicing. Very tempting now

    • +1

No issues with reliability and will handle what you're proposing but the warranty is only 5 years and read the fine print on the servicing, you only get 7 services over 84 months/84,000kms…plus that promo will likely end when the sale kicks off (end of the month).

  • Just spoke to holden, astras and trax are still both over 20k. Prices just got released

    • did they just raise their prices??? :)

      • I think so, the first of march is when they officially release prices but can take deposits now. But waiting for current promotions to finish

  • +3

    Just got quoted
$23386 for the Trax LTZ (in white)
$18706 for the LS Trax (in white)

    Both drive away, in SA
5 Year warranty and no included services.

    • arent they supposed to be honouring the 7 year servicing as well? Are they dropping that off all sales from now on

      • The previous promotion of 7 year warranty and free servicing has ended (as of today).
My understanding is that previous deals (prior to today) will be honored.

    • -1

      How much are they normally?

      • +1

        The MSRP are:
        Trax LTZ aut - $30,490 + ORC
        Trax LS Auto - $26,490 + ORC

Given there are discounts from Holden, they will try to factor in every little extra like window tint & floor mats.

ORC in NSW include at least the following - 3% stamp duty, dealer delivery (probably around $2500), Rego ($377) & CTP ($400-500)

Factor in the $10-11K discount mentioned in the article and the price shrek4 got quoted seem right.

    • SImilar to me, in WA:

I went in to Holden City North (Osborne Park, WA) today after phoning about the Trax, and was told the following:

Base model 'sold out'/unavailable in Western Australia
"a handful" of cars are held by dealers in the Eastern States, however they are clinging on to them
there has been "misinformation" about the pricing discounts in the media
the best price we can do is $18,670 (~25% discount off RRP)
So I walked, saying we will see how desperate you are for sales in 1-3 months time. And said will follow them up, which I will.

They of course countered with "this is a massive saving, we will sell out, you are missing out and there will be nothing left -in my opinion- come one month let alone three"

I let them know Im happy to sit on my cash until then.

  • +1

I decided I would buy an Astra if they were 12,000… that is an impulse buy but at that price I think it could be worth it as will plan to keep for 10 years, replacing the 1998 Barina.. but 20,000? that is too much for someone like me who never buys new. Waiting for a dealer to call me back, he is taking a while so guess the 12,000 offer is not appealing

    • so you offered $12k? and wasnt dissmissed on the spot?
      thats a good sign!

      • No we are playing phone tag, I put in an enquiry online saying I would be interested if the rumours were true and they were 12,000. He called me back left a message, and I have called back twice and left messages

        • ahh keep us posted,

I mentioned of the article but didnt say what price,
he seemed keen and said he will get back to me,

was a bit surprised to his $18.Xk price

thought it might be a bit closer

          VIC

        • PLEASE let us know, $12k I will buy one for sure if you can snag one.

          • @Aerith-Waifu: Same here to replace the 2006 focus, I don't usually buy new cars but would get one of these

  • Emailed a dealer on Colorado pricing. Same as listed price on website… WHY post that you are dropping your pants on prices in 10 days, like someone is dumb enough to pay full price in the mean time.

    • +1

There's a few popping up on carsales slowly. Zupps has a Z71 for 46k, I have heard of them going for 45 and 43k to others. An LTZ at 38k in Vic is pretty appealing even to me in WA but I'll wait it out and see if WA dealers play the game. They're all playing hardball for a couple of weeks by the looks.

      • Got quoted for 45K D/A for a white LTZ.

        • +1

Went to my local today, 44k for any colour MY20 LTZ. Didn't push any harder but definitely something to ponder.

          • @whitelie: Hey that's not bad. Will keep that benchmark in mind.

  • Went to Holden Castle Hill and all they could offer was the current website prices with 7 years free service. He was aware of the incoming deals, but didn't confirm any figures. Left my details and he will contact me with more info. His notebook had several pages of contact details.

  • Holden closure = fire sale: But how big will the discounts need to be? | Auto Expert John Cadogan

Cadogan compares used market value of brands that pulled out of the Australian car market.
Nissan's luxury brand Infinity ceased Australian operations in 2016, depreciation 66% versus market average 45%.

The fire sale discounts have to be very large to compensate for this, probably more than what will be offered. I was keen to buy an Equinox for $20k, but this is giving me considerable second thoughts, will have to do more research.

    • watched it also. Fat Mans formula assumes that you'll only keep the car for 4 years.

If the car is kept for say 10 years, then you should be ahead as the trade in prices would be near the same for a desirable brand as it would be for Holden.

      • +1

        Exactly this.

If you actually care about depreciation and value then you aren't going to be offloading your brand new car after four years (ie. getting hit with the maximum possible depreciation and the worst possible value).

If you're planning to buy brand new, and you're going to keep the car a long time, then the depreciation becomes a very different calculation.

        • In my situation, if i can get one, I'm not going to worry about depreciation unless it actually halves in value the first year, if it does ill wait a year and buy

And, unless i win lottery or the car turns out to be a lemon, or my life situation unexpectedly changes dramatically , I'll keep it for 10 yrs

    • Nissan's luxury brand Infinity ceased Australian operations in 2016, depreciation 66% versus market average 45%.

This is a dubious one since 'off brand' luxury cars like Infinity / Alfa/ Jag had absolutely hideous depreciation even when the brands weren't at risk of pulling out. Used Infinity's were a steal a couple of years ago.

      • Cheap Chinese car makers Cherry and Great Wall pulled out of Australia and their depreciation is even worse. Holden's quality sits between the two groups, so 66% maybe on the low side.

    • This was also posted on the last page where I commented my sums.
Z71 Colorado worth 57k RRP plus onroads. At 66% depreciation it's worth around 20k in 3 years. These are already being picked up for 43-46k and to get to that 20k 3 year value is…you guessed it, 45%. So the sums already add up in some cases.

      • Sorry I missed that, haha didn't read through the 7 pages of comments.

    • +1

Say what you will of John, the advice is solid. It is safe to assume depreciation will be massive. In summary all remaining Holden's would most like appreciate by 65% over 3 to 4 years. If you can buy any other brand that will depreciate on average by 45% , prices need to be 20% below a comparable car to make it even worth the risk with no warranties and future support. Holden saying they will be around for 10 years, we have no real recourse if they don't honour that. Happy hunting.

I might pick up a 12 month old used Holden if priced well below new to offset some of the depreciation…

  • -5

Is there any way to make money off this? Could you say, buy a Trax and rent it out to an Uber driver? Return on investment would be pretty sweet.

  • Just went to my local dealer in Perth. 44k drive away for a MY20 Colorado LTZ without any haggling. Still all listed as 50+ on carsales.
Salesman said there were big savings on LS-X's but I didn't price it up as I wasn't interested.

  • We are actually looking for a new car, was going to look at Subaru Forester, but might pop into Holden to see what they have.

    Their 7 seater any good?

    • The Acadia isn't a bad car, looked at one a while back but ended up with another CX9. If there's a hefty discount involved my decision wouldn't have been so easy.

Might also be worth looking at a Trailblazer. Cheaper but not as nice a car…more capable off road if that's your thing though.
