        • … and thermonuclear war. Let's all stay at home and play a nice game of chess.

          • @LikeMike: Agreed LM.

Just be careful where the Chess board and pieces
            were made

Will be an interesting session on Wall Street tonight.

          • @LikeMike: Russians love chess, so anyone promoting it must be an agent :D

Taking a cruise is individually one of the worst things you can do for your carbon footprint. Bad deal.

I like to take short distance cruises (they're easier), unfortunately this one looks too far Cunard.

  • I want to do the NZ cruise. Need help please…

Any suggestion on a decent cabin to choose without going too crazy on price?

    BF Oceanview Balcony $1,399 $2,798
    BD Oceanview Balcony $1,399 $2,798
    BE Oceanview Balcony $1,399 $2,798
    BC Oceanview Balcony $1,519 $3,038
    BA Oceanview Balcony $1,519 $3,038
    BB Oceanview Balcony $1,519 $3,038
    A1 Club Balcony $1,799 $3,598
    A2 Club Balcony $1,799 $3,598
    P2 Princess Suites $1,999 $3,998
    P1 Princess Suites $1,999 $3,998

I've heard a lot of new deals are coming online next week from Princess line ?!? most cruises will be around Oz and NZ away from Asia and corona virus.

    • In my uneducated opinion, of all the B's, pick BA. They are the most central cabins, all the other Bs go further to the bow or stern of the ship. The more to the centre of the ship you are the less movement you may experience as you go up and down over waves.

Then if you were looking to spend more money, I would say for the $200pp difference the Princess Suites are a much better deal than the Club cabins.

I'd suggest you google some reviews.

Royal Caribbean have announced they are temporarily relocating "Spectrum of the Seas" to Australia, formerly China/Asia only itineraries. This ship is similar, but even larger, to the "Ovation of the Seas" and is not even 12 months old, about 5,000 guests. Royal Caribbean are offering the volunteer firefighters a free cruise. Have heard that itineraries available next week, expect some good specials, this is a big ship to fill.

    • Wow - being an island country is paying dividends!

    • Keep us posted!

  • SOLD OUT for "27 Night Australia Circumnavigation Cruise on the Queen Elizabeth"?

I just booked myself and the wife on the "11 Night New Zealand Cruise on the Queen Elizabeth" departing Sydney.

    Departs 15 March,

    https://www.ozcruising.com.au/cruise/cu20-q010n

I went for the BF Oceanview Balcony cabin for $1399pp.

Never know might get a bonus extra 14 days off work up at the inpex camp in Darwin.

    • +3

Yep, I've booked the wife and mother in law on the same cruise. Opted for the Q1 Grand Suite in the end for $5400 pp. These normally go for $30-$50k for a similar trip length so was too good an offer to refuse.

They were planning on doing the Ghan/Indian Pacific train but are now doing this instead.

      Thanks OP.

      • Nice ! They are going to have a ball

        • I'm beginning to think that this may have been a bad idea..

This is the cyclone which is forming up North QLD forecast position on the 18th March

Basically, the day the ship arrives in NZ

          😲

          • @gooddealmate: Yeah i was having a look at that earlier today. I could see us possibly spending some time on the South Island. I am not in any way invested in the itinerary so don't really care where we end up.

I live in North Queensland and have zero faith in the BOM being able to predict the path of a cyclone this far out, years of experience have taught me they are highly unpredictable and erratic. I have seen so many cyclones fizzle out that were forecast to be big ones, I wouldn't stress too much at this stage.

Just keep in mind the Estimated Position Accuracy (km) in 72hrs is 320km. And even then it is normally wayyy off. BOM's weather charts have it skipping over the top of the North Island by Wednesday night. If that proves correct it will have minimal impact, i personally think they have it plotted too far south, and if it ends up there it will have no wind speed strength.

            http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/charts/viewer/index.shtml

In other news Cunard is offering "On Board Credit" for existing bookings made before 11 March 2020, and departing before 31 August 2020 to try to get people not to cancel their cruises.

            https://www.cunard.com/en-au/contact-us/travel-health-adviso…

But for some reason our sailing is exempt from the On Board Credit offer :( Probably because we didn't pay enough lol.

I gave them a call and pleaded the whole my am i exempt case but didn't get anywhere…. couldn't even get a supervisor, just went around in circles.

On the plus side if you do it by tomorrow you can cancel your booking and keep the amount as a future cruse credit. I don't personally like this option though as god only knows what financial position Cunard (Carnival owned) will be in once this whole vrius situation it resolved. They could easily go broke before you even get a chance to use the credit.

Carnival CCL's share price on 17 January was $51.90, they are now $21.75. Down 9.45% just today. If you trust Wikipedia they have $13.5 billion dollars of loans to continue making payment on, the ships are not paid for in cash. I have no desire to become one of their unsecured creditors, i can't see the next 12 months being kind to the industry as a whole.

Might be a good time for me to buy that cheap luxury cruise ship i've always wanted :)

            • @stringbean402:

I could see us possibly spending some time on the South Island.

That's what I said to the Mrs, I know the models aren't that reliable 7 days out but can't see the cruise ship risking it if there is a chance of it.

I even thought they may change it to Aus only cruise, either up North to Airlie/Cairns or down to Tassie.

god only knows what financial position Cunard will be in

A good point, we haven't really considered cancelling as the price we've paid would barely get a Britannia level balcony suite on a normal priced cruise, so we'll risk it haha… Providing there's not any ban of travel in the meantime of course!

              • @gooddealmate:

I even thought they may change it to Aus only cruise, either up North to Airlie/Cairns or down to Tassie.

God i hope not… I don't want to go on a cruise to my own back yard, Tassie would be ok though. We've had a few cruise ship in Townsville in the last few weeks and we only generally see 1 a month.

It will be our first time to NZ and everyone keeps telling me it's a shame we aren't going to the south Island as it is so beautiful, i would certainly not be disappointed.

We have sailed through the edge of a hurricane in the Caribbean, literally had 3 days of medical emergencies in a row with the ship blasting a full speed to the next port each day, was actually kind of fun.

Cancellation isn't a realistic option for me either, i couldn't book another Cunard cruise for $1400 pax and would also lose the expenses we have outlaid making our way down to Sydney.

I am genuinely curious to see how busy the cruise is though? They had such a short period of time to sell the cabins.

  • I just went to look, sold out 😂😂😂

What are the ships like? I'm gonna assume we'll be seeing a few more cheap cruises!

    • 2020: the year of cheap cruising

      • Just a matter of time before the two for one offers start then eventually the shipping lines will be PAYING the customer to get a booking.

        Be patient.

Another cruise ship, the Grand Princess, is stranded off the Californian coast, with 21 people tested positive; more importantly, 19 of whom are crew members incubating the virus from two previous voyages

    • yep, you'd have to be crazy to go anywhere near a cruise ship at the moment

Our cruise leaving tomorrow with Cunard, just got cancelled today. Already travelled down to Sydney as well for it.

Oh no. So sorry to hear that, really unlucky.

New Zeland have banned all cruise ships as of tomorrow bu they're not using that as an excuse..

Here is the email they sent.

We are very sorry to advise that your voyage on Queen Elizabeth from Sydney has been cancelled.

Given the escalating Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation across the globe and following advice from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and Public Health England we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel Queen Elizabeth’s voyage from Sydney on Sunday March 15.

We ask that you do not travel to the terminal as there will be no further information available, however, please be assured a member of our team will be in touch with you today to offer assistance and make any necessary arrangements for you including hotels and onward flights. We have also arranged to accommodate you in a hotel this evening and for an additional three nights if required.

Whilst these changes are due to unavoidable circumstances beyond the control of Cunard, we are delighted to offer you a Future Cruise Credit for 125% of the value of your original cruise.

        To summarise, further to the cancellation of your voyage, we would like to confirm we will provide you with;
Support from a member of our team throughout your stay in Sydney
Up to four nights’ hotel accommodation (full board).
125% future Cruise Credit (based on value of existing booking - to be used within one year).
Flights and transfers so that you can return home (original class booked).
Once again we sincerely apologise for this change at such short notice and thank you for your understanding during this unprecedented situation. We do hope that we will be able to welcome you onboard sometime soon.

        • +1

Problem is, 125% credit on a normally priced Cunard cruise doesn’t go very far :(

    • a bit low that they cancelled it with such short notice

    • +2

      This is pretty poor actually

P&O have grounded their cruises for the next 30 days

They’re offering full refunds OR 200% (!!!) cruise credit

      Carnival offered 150%

Seems like a pretty piss poor effort from Cunard, a supposedly higher end line to only offer 125

      • I was quite surprised by that too, pretty lousy if you ask me.

On saying that, I reckon a refund would be the better option anyway. Just can't see how these cruise lines can survive the next few months without any passengers. I wouldn't be surprised to see a few of them fold.

  • +1

You all should feel lucky now it got canceled otherwise you may be stranded on sea for weeks.

"Yeah, but this discounted trip would have saved me hundreds of dollars!"

As the seriousness of the world-wide restrictions became known in the weeks following this deal, successively upvoted OzBargain travel deals besmirched the website's reputation.

Luckily for Ozbargain, the lockdown has meant these shameful deals stopped appearing and everyone's forgotten this intellectual low point due to the trauma of enforced social isolation.

      • What reputation lol

        • It's hard to believe now, but when the SE Asian budget airlines were emerging and Tiger was launching new domestic routes, OzBargain was the go-to place in Australia to hear about legitimate flight deals. Without any new airlines emerging in a long time, it's understandable those types of deals would become rare.

The daily affiliate marketing deals, fanclubs, wordless comment downvoters and mind-bogglingly stupid members (I used to think they were kids or trolling) didn't become mainstream in the travel section until maybe 3 years ago.

But over the last month, upvotes for travel deals that normally wouldn't get highly upvoted (despite the trigger upvoters) were doing better than ever. I would prefer if it was sockpuppeting rather than a recent rise in stupidity. Imagine if TripAdvisor had these types of people dominating the forums…Democracy doesn't work when 90% of the population is dense.
