Western Digital, 3TB 64M IntelliPower SATA3 Caviar Green, WD30EZRX $159.50

Next best price was $181 from i-Tech.

I haven't been looking at drives for a while, so if this isn't a great deal feel free not to vote :)

EYO also have the HP Microservers at $239.80 still.

GreenboxIT also take 3 days to answer an email about whether items are in stock or not…

      • …and when they do answer they try to be smart-arses and are too lazy to give an estimated shipping price, instead emailing back just to tell you to go to "simply" their site, add the items to your cart, check out, register an account and THEN get to see a shipping price. Pack of wankers. If that's their idea of customer service for a potential sale I shudder to think how shit they are if you need something repaired or returned.

  • Netplus also has the Hitachi Coolspin 3TB which by many reports is a better HDD. For $159. Even cheaper at Scorptec if you have the OCAU coupon code.

    • care to share said coupon?

        • I would of gone with their 2TB for $85 if it wasn't out of stock because that equates to $42.5 Per TB instead of their 3TB for $150 which equates to $50 Per TB but oh well what's gone is gone.
Maths is the language of Bargain Hunters..well General Maths anyway.

I'd go Hitachi and then Samsung before the WD's, but I thought even if I dont want it I should let the OzBargainer's know!

    • How come?

in particular the WD's dont get a good rap in the HP Microservers. I went from Seagates to Samsungs and have found them quite and quick (F3's) and now I moved to the Hitachi Cinema Star drives (2Tb for the microserver I use for my media centre). There was a lot of comments on the ocau forum about WD's failing more than other drives.

It will be interesting now that WD owns Hitachi…

really? i haven't kept up with the forums but personal experience is that Samsungs (both 3.5 and 2.5) have a high failuer rate. My WDs have been solid so far.

Will need to do a bit more research!

        • Thx for the info.

    • Is that a joke?

Just $20 less… at least… :/ The BHP 3TB offer spoit me. I think it was $118ea for 5 HDs, delivered from the states.

    Sigh.

    • Price you pay for convenience in case of warranty claim I guess.

Only in the 1st year AFAIK. Beyond that it's contact the manufacturer, which means around $30 in shipping and time to wait.

In the first year it's less shipping and, hopefully, less time to wait. Unless you bought locally enough that you can pop on over.

Still, I'd buy local but would want it at $20+ less than the above offer, at least.

        • in the same boat, $149~$159 for 3TB isn't best bang for hard earned money!!!!

really hoping BHP/others US retailer would bring the price back!!! :(

    For the true bargain seeker.
    3tb at $159 is 0.053c/gb
2tb at $80 is 0.04c/gb (Static ice lists as low as 74 from MSY)
You can buy 4TB for the price of 1x3TB. Obviously if you're constrained by space the 3TB might be a better option. But think about it this way, the 2T isn't even on special…imagine the $/gb when it is. :)

Also, with early adopters, remember that new design HDDs have much higher failure rate. IIRC it's something crazy like 10% (don't quote me on this) which reduces to about 2-3% over time. Sure, there's warranty but losing your precious photos and documents is still a painful process. This might be a bargain, but it's a bit risky for my liking.
