First deal post so please be gentle.

Had my eye on a tablet for a while as I'm going overseas and can claim TRS. Finally pulled the trigger on this as it's the lowest price historically as far as I can tell.

Price beat at my local OW for $473.10. Retails for $639 at OW normally. Even the staff there were shocked.

I really liked the Samsung DeX stuff that this tablet can do.
I was not very impressed with the display though. Even though it's OLED it didn't get as dark as I would like (even on lowest brightness level). Viewing angles were great.

Thanks for your input but my understanding is that you would only need to declare and repay GST claimed if the value of the goods exceeds the passenger allowance of $900AUD.

Unlike what you believe, up to $900 of goods can claim TRS then brought back legally. This deal is for something much lower than that threshold.

      • +1

Correct. I re-read the rules. Good to know the threshold rule. Thanks.

it's worth educating yourself with the actual TRS rules before calling people frauds.

Return to Australia with goods subject to the Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) provisions

If you return to Australia with goods for which you have claimed a GST refund under the TRS on departure, you must declare those goods at Question 3 on the Incoming Passenger Card (IPC) if their value exceeds the passenger concession of AUD900.

GST refunds received on goods exceeding the passenger concession will have to be repaid if the items are brought into Australia.

See the Tourist Refund Scheme page for more detail about how it works.

      • That's always something I struggled explaining to customers when I worked in retail. People would say "So I claim the money back but then pay it back when I come back into Australia? What's the point then?"

So under $900 you don't pay anything back, but over you do, right ?

on "general" goods, your allowance is $900 AUD (before tax) per person, unless you are with family who you can pool together the allowed limit. So you and your spouse traveling together will allow you to claim TRS on an item worth $1800 (before GST) and not have to pay back the GST on the way back in.

General goods don't include clothing. Those don't count towards your $900 AUD limit and don't need to be declared on the way in.

@lostn: @lostn: To add to this clarification, my understanding was also that the actual value of the goods you are bringing back is diminished by the fact that they are now used.. ie. The $500 tab s5e you claimed GST on on the way out is not worth that anymore/on the way in..

            • +1

@FairCrack: i believe that is standard procedure, but I could not find this documented anywhere officially.

      • Thanks mate!!

    • It is not fraud if you are within the $900 quota.

And also passengers travelling togethet can pool their TRS quota.

  • Looks like Amazon were also doing it for $498 but are now out of stock. With around 3.5% cash back, the Officeworks price beat guarantee of 5% is best I can find right now.

Another point to note is that this is the Silver model, not Black. Bing Lee only have the Silver at the $498 price.
And if you want to do delivery, you'll need to incur another $6 as that is the Bing Lee delivery fee. I ended up paying $478.80 which is still a great price.

  • Great first post OP with a record low price on this current tech.

  • Keep in mind theres no audio jack on this tablet and cpu is a strange step backwards from the Tab 4 - https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=9581&idPhone2…

In future many more devices are going to no longer have a headphone jack, unfortunately companies want to push us on to bluetooth whether we like it or not. Luckily this tablet has decent quad speakers.

As this tablet sits in the middle between the Tab A and Tab s, this mid range model's SD670 cpu is a good choice as it is reasonably powerful whilst retaining good efficiency too, resulting in long battery life.
