Where Can I Buy Toilet Paper?

I’ve run out and have been to 4 different Coles/ Woolies.

Seriously when do they expect to re stock it?

Just got this email from coles

As you may have seen, the past few days have been challenging for some customers with shortages of selected items, in particular toilet rolls! For which I apologise.

This is due to increased purchases of everyday items by some customers brought about, in part, by an international media & social media frenzy – which then causes other customers to lose confidence in the system and then buy more themselves. Australia has an outstanding supply chain and most of our products are sourced from Australia including toilet paper.

We're working to re-stock shelves every day to meet demand, and we have agreements in place to increase production of everyday items in Australia if the need arises. We have increased the number of team members in our stores and our suppliers are doing the same.

However, in the short term, we have reluctantly chosen to introduce a temporary 4 pack limit on toilet paper to ensure the elderly and those groups at highest risk can still access the everyday products they need, and to reduce likelihood of bulk purchasing which then appear on the internet at a price premium.

I understand the average 4 person family needs around 20 rolls of toilet paper per fortnight, and larger packs contain around 30 rolls meaning 4 packs would total 120 rolls - enough for around 12 weeks.

We appreciate the understanding and patience of our customers who miss out, and our hardworking suppliers and team members who are doing their best to ensure we are helping all customers.

We appreciate your business and I know that security of grocery supply is a key concern for all Australians. Through the bushfires I also know that Australia is at its best when we all come together to help each other.

We as a family of 4 maybe go through 3-4 rolls a week

    How about everyone else here?

Walked into Coles in Penrith about 7 pm yesterday and grabbed myself two 24 packs of tp.. No fuss no q.. had plenty of other brands also..

  • +1

Use this and then just dry off with a single sheet of TP or personal hand towel. You will feel fresher.

  • Super cheap auto sells it

  • Coles in Christies Beach Adelaide had stock as of half an hour ago.

  • I can just imagine soon that then they stock the shelves they will need an armed guard to stop from being mugged doing it

    • +1

They should have toilet paper over the counter so you have to ask for it. 2 pack per customer

      • +1

        Like the smoke counter

    • Well at some coles they actually have a security guard standing there when the pallets are loaded and the toilet paper is getting put onto shelves. Also staff watch to make sure you can only get 1 pack.

Forgive my ignorance but if there is no supply issue why wouldn't the supermarkets just order it in super bulk. I know there is limited shelf space and small store rooms due to JIT inventory management but it wouldn't be hard to hire a shipping container and fill it and just keep replenishing the shelves.

    • +1

it wouldn't be hard to hire a shipping container and fill it and just keep replenishing the shelves.

And where do you suppose the store leave this shipping container? And how do these shops prevent the shipping container from being broken into and the stuff getting stolen.

      • I suppose it is encouraging the heist of the century

      • The logistics of the whole thing are not exactly complicated. They could fill a small rigid truck and deliver 12 pallets to each store if they had the stock on hand… they don't. If that is just a warehousing delay or manufacturers are short on stock is yet to be seen.

    • +4

They don't want to be stuck with a tremendous oversupply of toilet paper when all the idiots hoarding it realise they have enough to last a century.

    • +2

I’m assuming this is a serious question so I’ll give a serious answer.

They are getting bought as soon as they arrive in the stores. Coles is having two shipments a day and they sell out as soon as they arrive. They’re not hiding them out somewhere or sitting there on their hands.

The manufacturers had some excess capacity before but now have ramped up production. But they’re not going to increase capacity permanently because that requires serious investment and takes time. By the time they’d have increased capacity, the panic buying likely would be over.

CEO of Australia’s largest TP manufacturer said that if people stopped panic buying, it’d take a couple of days for the supply chain to be back to normal. All this is doing is pulling purchases forward. People aren’t wiping their bums more so eventually there will be a lull in purchases.

When the same panic buying happened in HK, it lasted a few weeks. Then everyone realised they had nowhere to put the extra toilet paper and stopped panic buying.

      Hopefully sanity is regained soon.

      • My train of thought was that the TP manufacturers have been telling us on TV and social media that there are no supply issues and then show us bulk quantities of TP. Despite this seemingly wonderful surplus, we don't see the product in the stores. Personally I haven seen TP for over 2 weeks at my local Woolies. Maybe I am under estimating the panic buyers and the preppers but I find it surprising that the supermarkets can't keep it stocked. I mean there's gotta be a better way to manage it than having bare shelves for weeks on end.

But I agree with Brendanm, at some point it will calm down and all of sudden there is heaps of TP on the shelves and everyone has stockpiled it at home. Once that happens Woolies won't be able sell the stuff for weeks.

  • I ran out yesterday and legitimately couldn't find toilet paper anywhere. I got baby wipes instead.

They're actually so much better. I might actually just use baby wipes from now on…

    • +2

Remember baby wipes cannot be flush, it won't disintegrate in water and will choke your toilet.

      • +1

        Yes, of course, I'm aware.

        • … so where do you dispose of the wipes?

          • +1

@ihbh: They rinse the wipes after use, then dispose of them in the garbage can of course 🤥

            • +1

@sobes: I rinse them then reuse, am I doing it wrong?

          • +1

@ihbh: Actually it's pretty normal to throw them straight into the bin in some countries.

            • +1

@Inshinshishimop: It’s also not hard to put a bin by the toilet. If you use flushable wipes or baby wipes, that’s really what you should be doing.

  • +2

I went in to one of the smaller IGA today in Beeliar (Perth) and they a few double length left . Made my day :-)

I even left a few on the shelf for the next person.

  • +1

Install a bidet. Sadly don't have enough cash right now and down to 2 rolls.

Bidet will save the environment as well.

    • +3

Bidet doesn’t eliminate the need for toilet paper…

      • +4

You use 4 squares to pat yourself dry instead of 20 to 30 squares to progressively smear your butt mud to the point where you don't see it anymore.

You use a hell of a lot less than what you otherwise would.

Also works well as an enema to give your pipes a good clearing if required (just gotta aim at the right spot).

Well worth the price of admission.

      • Hair dryer?

      • Just use a face washer (as in towel), ur washed butt should be clean so just use a towel you wash regularily will do. I've been using bidet + face washer for the past 20+ years and my butt can hardly tolerate a harsh wipe by toilet paper.

        • Intriguing system. I suppose the key is making sure not to mix them up and accidentally use an unwashed butt wipe for a face towel.

I reckon if you colour code them (maybe buy brown towels for the bum washers), it’d work pretty effectively.

  • Smaller community pharmacies - generally slightly dearer than Colesworth but as many consumers wouldn't usually buy their generic household supplies from smaller pharmacies many will still have stock at regular pharmacy prices Sockpuppet Warning: Craigmore North Pharmacy, 2 Zurich Road, Craigmore South Australia 5114 -> HAS STOCK

My wife said her Woolworths where she works received half a pallet today.

She purchased a quilton pack and a sorbent for another family member before the store opened. Once the store open there was 100+ people fighting over 30 odd packs, crazy.

We were down to around 6 rolls, and with a toddler peeing and pooping all the time, it goes fast, timing was great.

  • Try the petrol station

    • Every petrol station is out of stock since they hold so little. I saw one that sold 1 box of facial tissues for 4.50 and there was only 1 left

  • We have one roll left, went to Coles, Woolies, Aldi and K-Mart today, all were out. :O :O Damn it, not even those single packs. What are these people doing?

    • Hoarding or sending them to China lol

    • Yeh, the politicians and coles boss's said theres nothing to worry about, just stay calm!!!

  • Local Coles had pallet Quilton 48s - all gone in 10 minutes!

Older lady sat next to me just outside Coles. She did not know what to do
She was using hand towels and tissues - but I warned her re clogging sewer.

But she said - what else can I do?

    • We are going to have some serious sewer issues with this BS!

      • Thanks fully most of these people will just (profanity) up their own plumbing

    • +1

Bin next to the toilet. They do this in certain areas overseas as some places don't have powerful plumbing. I had to do this once in an old fashioned hotel.

      • But do people know they can’t be flushed?

        • Jumbo signage does wonders. The real question is if people would actually follow the rules or don't care.

        • No especially the ones that say on the pack that they are flushable which they aren't.

  • +1

Stockpiling both toilet paper and cans of baked beans seems counter productive to me.

    • & Glen20 for the nasty explosions

  • -6

You can buy it below, it's a reasonable price considering the circumstances

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1-3-6-x-QUILTON-TOILET-PAPER-TIS…

  • I think Coles is on the right path with one pack limit .
Woolies would need 2 trolleys with their 4 pack limit filling it with 48 roll packs and properly have to fight to get to the checkouts lol. BTW it a dream nothing is still there .
I know its very advance thinking to place the limit to x amount of rolls .
Still with the current limits it doesn't take long for a Parent and 3 kids to clean out all aisle .

  • +1

Why do humans need TP anyway, cant we learn to efficiently poo like animals

    • Q: why do dogs lick their balls? A: because they can!

      • But i cant shit efficiently enough to not need wiping :(

Monkeys seem to deuce it out rather efficiently, and we are supposed to be related…

        • +2

Eat more fiber and stay hydrated?

  • -4

Be proud the toilet paper hoarding has spread world wide now started here in Oz lol .

    • +4

      Definitely didn't start in Australia

      • Yep, classic hoarding behaviour that seems to have come from the source of the virus (people worried they'll be in lockdown for months).

  • +10

People really think that tomorrow is the end of the world and toilet paper will save them. People are displaying sheepish culture and animal like behaviour to buy toilet paper. Good on them, well done hoarders. You guys must be so so proud of yourself, leaving nothing for older people and people in genuine need.

    • Who are you guys? We just want 1 pack geez

  • +3

Costco Moorabbin had replaced their entire bog roll and paper towel section with bottled water yesterday. Guess they are helping out with an alternative…
Lots of things had 1 per transaction limit. Flour, sugar, glen20 (3 pack), hand sanitiser (3 pack) etc

    • Do you still get hand sanitiser in Costco? What is the price?

      • Yeah it was all loose in a shopping trolley. Limit of 3 per person. Decent size bottles not the purse size ones. Can't quite recall the price. Might have been $5 for each? Don't quote me.. U can call up to confirm stock and price :)

      • $6 for 200ml at Costco Auburn

    • I've never seen hand sanitiser at any of the Costcos I've been to. Don't think so anyway. Is it in the section where you find the over the counter medical creams and stuff?

      • Nah it was all in a shopping trolley in the middle of the aisle on the way to toilet roll section. Must have been a special order. Not in any aisle. This was by far the busiest section! (next to meat, in front of packaged bread, walkway just before TP and detergents)

  • +9

We got a pack from Costco yesterday. They'd all gone from the floor, but we waited up near the checkouts where people who had more than their 1 pack limit were getting their excess supply taken off them. Score!

    • +1

      Genius!

    • Costco packs are massive, lasting at least twice as long as anything from a supermarket. Anybody taking more than one deserves a nasty case of Covid-19.

  • +1

If anyone is near Crown Casino .
Take some bag and all the establishment from memory has those cake oversize roils in the dunnies if extra desperate .

  • +1

Just got back from coles at munno para and the have some 20 packs about 25 mins ago

  • If you go to aldi as soon as they open there is toilet paper.

    • Apparently aldi slowly stocks shelves during the day, in a staggered manner.

      • +1

yeah went to Aldi around 11am whilst pondering if I should get the 4pack3ply which they had plenty of, staff came back and threw 6 (probably exceeded limit from checkout) of a cheaper 2ply pack and 3 bystanders me included got 2 each.

      • They pallet everything into place and staff have to do all tasks in the store they restock when it’s empty unless they don’t have the stock

  • +2

I got some from a local corner shop that was hidden away in a quiet street.

With the 1 pack per limit restriction at Coles, there should be some on the shelves this week (fingers crossed!) as the buying frenzy dies down.

Hope that the major supermarkets refuse returns so the hoarders or those that bought to resell r now stuck with more than a lifetime supply

    • what stops them from paying for 1 pk and going back for another pk ?

      • +4

Nothing, but it will stop them clearing the place out in the first 5 mins.

Don't stress- make do like parents have done for millennia.

Before our throwaway society reached its magnificence, people used cloth nappies on babies and cloth wipes with soap and water.

Go pick up 20 small hand towels or face washers, and when ready to go 'number 2's' moisten a few of them in preparation.
Use them as needed, and then pop the used ones in a plastic bag.

It's your poo- no one else's. You have a shower and wash downstairs? This is no different. Wash the towels of most of the solids, then pop them in the washing machine with Canasten (disinfectant).

It's what we should all be doing anyway, instead of wiping and flushing perfectly good bleached paper.

Trust me… don't stress about toilet paper. No one is asking you to clean other peoples poo for god sake.
And like I said, every parent has been knee deep in poo when their kids were young. It's no big deal, just wash it all properly afterwards… and if you're seriously that queasy about your own poo, glove up and use a brush!

Stuff this toilet paper 'emergency' crap!!!!

    • Well Said Mate….Legend :)

  • +1

Fill up a water bottle to squirt as your last resort

  • +1

IMHO, I think this is a blessing in disguise. I kept procrastinating installing a hand spray in the toilet, which I finally did out of desperation. It actually works out cheaper, is more ecofriendly, more hygienic and feels nice.

  • If i order TP from coles online, and schedule the pickup for, say, wednesday afternoon, am i guaranteed to get TP.

Are they like amazon where they only finalise the order once all items are in stock?

    • Good question…

    • I ordered from Woolworths online for pickup and they were out of stock on pick up day. so not guaranteed from woolworths

    • better to get it delivered maybe?

      • Delivery minimum order is $100. I just need tp. It was hard enough to fill up the order to the $50 pickup minimum. Starting to get really annoyed now. Been looking for tp since last Wednesday, only because I was down to 2 rolls. I’ve spent probably 3 hours worth of driving, parking and walking into different supermarkets only to find empty shelves. All the while the politicians just sit back and say “remain calm, everything is ok”.

        • I tried to make a order for Click and Collect for last Friday, and Coles couldn't supply any toilet paper. They don't charge you until they've confirmed what can be picked up/delivered. I was able to get tissues at least.

Trying for delivery tomorrow with Coles instead and hoping it doesn't get cancelled this time. Have had no luck going around to stores either and relying on donated rolls from my mum as we've run out!

    • Yes they're like Amazon because we tried ordering from coles and the next day they cancelled and refunded us. Maybe try woolworths?

  • Went to the local Westfield (Garden City) today, there were a few pallets of Quilton 3-ply 36 pks. Around 3pm still plenty left. Shoppers were limited to 1 pack per shopper.

  • -4

A ten minute thereabouts distraction for you, in-between any attempts to buy yet more toilet paper during the week.

Certainly some interesting tumbleweed timing in the upload of that video.

    Bonus great song

That could easily be re-released and lyrics updated -
"Come out of the cave, silver lizard. We need more space to store even more toilet paper"
All reptiles there coronavirus-free & otherwise harmless.

    Better audio here. Enjoy

  • +1

they restock everyday / nearly everyday. it just sells out quickly. not Coles or Woolies fault it's the fault of panic buyers.
there's no shortage of toilet paper only hand sanitizer and face masks

  • +1

Went out Saturday in Brisbane inner South and visited 3 Woolies around between 8am and 9am. Shelves all empty.

Went a further 2km into Woolongabba and the Coles there had a pallet sitting just inside the entry.

So there are some out there if you could be bothered to drive around.

  • I was told by a coles stuff that first thing in the morning

  • Shame that some people are hoarding toilet paper. I only got two rolls left, so I went to Woolworths, Coles and 2 Aldi stores on Saturday, and there was none left. Decided to try my luck at Aldi yesterday when the door opened at 8:30 and got 2 8-packs. I'm relieved.

  • +1

The servos had heaps. Just the 2 big chains shell/coles and caltex. And it's only quilton. BP had the small packs.

  • +1

On my route checked a IGA which had o and some people were buying facial tissues. Second location a Coles had nothing in toilet rolls . paper towels and tissues . Took a video and picture for the crazy history lol .
