        Ground coffee beans

        Very earthy…

Based on the image with the portafilter,it must be ground beans. Just a note- I bought the delonghi dedica for $100 (down from $300) in a previous deal and i haven't been able to make good espresso. I've tried every combo of grind size, dose, temperature, cheap beans, expensive beans- in every case it ends up distinctly sour. I read that sour means over extraction, but if I reduce the grind size, I just get a fast flow of bitter water. My hunch is that maybe you need to spend > $500 for a good result, and I don't think this kmart machine will work. It bothers me because the melbourne roasted Aldi $10 beans smell fantastic and have given me the most drinkable result among all the expensive beans I've tried. If only I had a good machine

im not a coffee pro like you you seem to have it down to a science, but ive got a cheap kmart coffee machine from 2018 xmas time and the killer coffee blend (normal strength) comes up very well, doesnt have that bitter taste might be worth a shot?

also hear allot of people say the plunger is the best way but each to their own in that regards lol

      • +2

        Sour is under extraction.

Try grinding finer and/or using more coffee in the basket.

      • Mine work fine.

Using a Breville BCG820SS grinder and a decent tamper.

Might be using a too long extraction time.

      • Mine makes shit coffee too, never hot and milk takes ages. Wouldn't recommend the Delonghi but am going to try this one.

      • This comment is not related to the machine, but the Aldi beans are fantastic value! I use it on plunger and aeropress.

      • try a longer extraction…. sweeter notes come in the more you extract.
or try this: get 4 shot glasses. pull 5 sec into the 1st for 5sec, quickly swap out the cup and let it continue into that cup for 5 sec then quickly swap to the 3rd cup, etc…
Now line them up in order and sip each noting the different qualities in each glass then adjusting your extraction time accordingly excluding the watery cups.
My extraction on my breville duo temp is 20sec.

      • If you reduce the grind size and just get water then I imagine you have channelling. To reduce this learn how to properly distribute and tamp using the bench technique :)

DO NOT use taste in your instance. Go for that 'shot time window' of 20-30 seconds to see if you have your grind and tamp down pat. Once you know your shot time is good then go for other variables, like increasing your temperature and then different beans.

  • I've always been eyeing the bes870 and i have to wonder can i get a passable experience for like 1/5 spend hmm

    • +1

      Even the 870 is rubbish…

      I still haven't unpacked my BES920 at $632…

If you are banging in this arena I'd grab a NEW BCG820 for $150 on sale and a EM7000 used over an 870.

You could grab a 2nd hand dual boiler but most seem to be binned when the o-rings on the boilers perish but the cup is insanely good

    Anko $69 @ Kmart

I reckon the Big W Anko coffee machines are better.

According to choice can produce nicer tasting coffee than a $900+ Delonghi coffee machine

looks like you can't go wrong for $69

    • Thanks for the links. I'm convinced now!

  • Its a shame that this is not getting so much attention. Orginal goes for $129 I think!

Note its milk tank is very noisy as people wrote in product review:

    https://www.productreview.com.au/listings/kmart-semi-automat…

I grab it straight away. Workout this plus 9 bags of supermarket coffee will work out cheaper than buying 7 eleven coffee. I am not picky on my coppa as yo can see. I will not suggest you compare this with $500 machine. I can confirm it makes an ok coffee and as long as it last for a year, I am happy.

  • Great price! I just bought a second hand Sunbeam caffè Barista ($40) which is very similar to this machine. I like it so far. I wanted an Anko one but I thought they were sold out, hence I bought the Sunbeam

    • Switching to instant coffee from these machines wouldn't reduce that much carbon dioxide emissions when you compare the emissions from burning coal. Put things in perspective and you'll see the bigger picture.

      • The point is that it's still less, with the end user.

  • Any reviews yet? Im tempted to buy, however don't mind spending a few hundred if someone's recommends something better. I mainly drink expresso or long blacks.

  • I got this 8 months ago for $129, it works good, makes decent coffee but The milk frother is hit and miss and not the best. The pre set coffee buttons for latte/cap adds too much milk so instead use the Manuel frother and add as much milk you need, iv found out this way it tastes better. One more thing, coffee tastes better when you freshly ground coffee as i have tried a few types before. so iv got a cheap hand grinder and buy beans instead of pre grinded. Aldi coffee beans taste great.
    Overall it’s a good machine for $69!

    • Which Aldi beans?

      • +2

        Lazzio dark roast coffee beans!
        Red/black packet. About $12 for a kilo.

        • +1

Thanks, I used to get their organic ground coffee but it hasn’t been available for a long time.

        • How do they compare to Coles organic beans?

      • Be warned, the Honduras absolutely kicked my arse. I'm sensitive to caffeine and that was a hard couple of days!

        • I really enjoy the Coles organic beans, so I'll give it a go!

  • Has anyone bought and tested?

  • I bought one for the clearance price. Sadly the pump is DOA: can't hear any water pump noise at all. The heating elemets are working, but no pumping action.

I got a dud. I'm returing it and asking for a refund.

    • There is an orange stopper at the bottom of the water tank you have to remove it

      • Did that too. I went through the instructions over and over again. The problem is, it's not complaining that its out of water - it just doesn't pump water.

  • Update: I just went to my Kmart Mt Ommaney and they still had a few of these. Purchased one, but haven't used it yet.
