  • I don't use any points based rewards cards or systems so I am a bit ignorant to this. Why would you buy points when they're usually redeemable for less than it cost you to buy them?

    • If you need a little more to redeem a flight. Points can easily be worth more than 4c each if redeemed for the right thing, like first class travel.

    • Sometimes you just need a few more points to get into e.g. business class. We had that with Qantas last year but, fortunately, we got into a wine deal that was cheaper than points purchase and we got the wine as well. Not sure if Virgin has an equivalent to Qantas wine shop.

      • That's exactly what I did last week. I needed 14000 points to get a 123100 point first class Emirates flight. Qantas wanted $497 to top up my points, but they also had a case of wine for $360 with 15000 bonus points. The only problem was that the bonus points aren't instant like the top up; they say it can take up to 15 days, but most get it much sooner. Mine came in 2.5 days later and the flight was still available :)

        • Well done. The only issue is flying anywhere with the current “problems”.

          • @try2bhelpful: I'm going in Dec/Jan. Time will tell if things are better by then.

            • @puffinfresh: Best of luck. If I could get insurance I would be very tempted to go travelling with the deals currently on. However, it is, probably, irresponsible of me to do so at this stage. By Dec/Jan we should have a much better idea on what we are dealing with.

  • I don't think this is good value. Take for example a flight from Brisbane to Haneda in Business with is just under 60,000 points. With taxes the total for a one way flight is about $1600.

Considering return flights have been around $3000 on sale, there is no real benefit in purchasing points as you are also more restricted when you can redeem. Most points purchasing in Australia doesn't work as there is no value compared to some of the purchase deals offered by airlines overseas like Alaskan.

    • As far as I’m concerned points are only for business class or one way flights.
