  • are these ones better than the mirabella genio?

The Genio ones don't turn on sometimes at the light switch. There's also a half second delay when you turn on at the switch.

Also annoying is..if i turn my amazon echo off at the power then i'll have to install it again in the app to operate them by voice.

Philips Hue are the gold standard at the moment. No delay, and almost no issues. Usually more expensive than anything else, but worth it in my opinion.

      • What do use to control it? I've been using Google Home but its fairly delayed

        • +1

That delay is nothing to do with the Hue though. Commands need to be sent to google servers and processed before coming back to your hub.

Speaking of which, not sure of the time line but google has/will have local processing of common commands which will speeds things up. It may already be enabled on the newer assistant devices and pixel 4?

          • @zorrt: Thanks for the info!

What do you personally use to control the lights? Just your phone?

            • @WilhelmBargo: Amazon Alexa

            • @WilhelmBargo: Na don't use my phone. Mines run off home assistant + deconz plus combination of Xiaomi light sensor and body sensor to automate, voice using google, and Xiaomi buttons and the hue dimmer for the kids. Mix and matched over the years depending on what's on sale.

Yes zigbee no WiFi Chinese tuya server

    • My Mirabello Genio light always goes offline and stops working, even after a complete reset. And no firmware updates since purchasing a year ago. Hue all the way.

      • I used to have a genio light but firmware update bricked it lol

        Put me off smart lighting

  • +1

Has been $10 cheaper from memory (missed that deal dangit) but this is quite a good price if you want the bulbs and dimmer.

  • Is this worth investing into now that Philips is turning off support for Gen 1? Gen 2 is released 3 years after gen 1 so it may very well have couple of years left?

    • These are Gen II (square box) and apparently future proof but I suspect you'll encounter the same issue in a couple years :P

    • Don’t see why not. This is the gen 2 hub and there’s nothing newer out. Even if they release a new hub (they’ve said there’s no plans at this time) it’ll be years before this is depreciated if the gen 1 is anything to go by. You can simply replace the hub too, no need to replace the bulbs which is the main expense.

      • I know this is gen 2 but gen 1 is only 3 years older. So in another 3 years you need to replace the hub hypothetically.

        • Well there isn’t a gen 3 yet and Phillips have stated one isn’t coming at this time, so you’re looking at more than 3 years. After that the g2 hub was about $60. When the bulbs normally retail for $20-$80 a bulb, and more for specialty ones, the cost of the hubs not that significant unless you never plan to expand beyond the starter kit.

Even then the G1 hub still works for non cloud based stuff still too, so it’s not immediately useless.

This kits still a good price if you ignore the hub and factor in the bulbs and switch retail alone.

        • Gen 2 came out 5 years ago and there are no reports of a new gen coming out.

    • The hub change doesn't make any bulbs not work

    • I think it's still worth it. Those cheaper brand services can be turned off at any moment too and at this price the hub is pretty much free so you're sorta just paying for the bulb and switch.

  • Cheaper than buying the bridge along.

    • do you need the bridge for this to function?

      • This starter pack comes with a Hue bridge, yes you need to plug the bridge on a wifi router to enable smart control.

      • Yes zigbee hue hub or smart things etc

      • The Echo plus or show 10 have zigbee so can act as an alternative if you are in the amazon ecosystem.

  • Pretty sure that kit comes with 2 bulbs, but the description says "each kit includes four dimmable White Ambiance A60 bulbs".

How many OzB'ers do you need to screw in a smart light bulb?
    Four:
    one to order it
one to check the order is over $49 to qualify for free shipping with out Amazon Prime
one to go to their parcel locker to collect it
and one to post about it on OzB

Plus one more (JV) to comment about the post

    • +1

It is now $39 to qualify for free shipping on eligible items without Prime

  • Does this work with smart things?

My remote stopped working and I contacted Amazon. They sent me an entire new kit… Now I have a bridge that I have no need for.

    • you can save it for a future upgrade, let's say if you have over 50 bulbs you will need that extra bridge.

    • Did u contact within 30 days? I too am experiencing some problem with my dimmer switch

      • No, I had to set up a chat manually rather than through the returns window.

Basically it still worked but chewed through batteries really quick. I put a brand new battery in after the first one ran out within 6 months, and a couple of days later it was dead as a doornail.

    • Last yeah I threw one on eBay and got $50 or $55 for it, for what it’s worth.

    • you can sell the bridges for $30+ on marketplace

  • I guess I'll be going to Target to refund the ones I already bought then..

    • Is a trip to Target worth saving $97 to return three of these kits?

  • Great deal, bought a few to replace my WiFi lights. Was looking at the IKEA lights the last couple days, and this is a better price

    • +1

      • Thanks mate but I heard it’s hit and miss as it’s a clearance item

      • Thx for the link. Just got price beat from bunnings for $62.10👍🏻

Phillips has dropped the price on this starter kit.

    Enjoy!

    • can the switch work with other smart bulbs or just philips

      • Only Phillips ecosystems

      • In theory with other zigbee systems, but you need app support.

    • Ordered. Finally, I jumped on the bandwagon.

    • Showing as $139 for me?

      • It is showing $69 again now. :)

    • Coming up as $139 for me :(
