I'd still recommend Hue. The lights are poorer quality, but they are cheaper, and have a proper ecosystem of accessories, and the bridge/bulb settings can be interacted with even if someone switched all the bulbs off.

I agree. These clog up the wifi..

      • Not if you only buy one…

I got about 25 Hue lights up my house. Some people I know have more.
Imagine if they were all Lifx or esp8266 based ?

@r0nmac: For that many lights, best to have a separate wifi access point and channel just for your home automation. Then it will not affect your faster devices - computers, TV. 25 on one wifi/router is no problem.
Simplest way is to use 2.4GHz for automation, and 5GHz for computers etc, all on the one router. No extra hardware needed.

I use Hue bulbs too, but would not if I had to pay RRP! (Thanks OzB)
It is more about being able to control them without going through an overseas server, than clogging wifi.

            • @bargaino: No separate access point needed, just a separate SSID. That's how I've set mine up. Different SSIDs and VLANs for LIFX, CCTV and PCs.

              • @banana365: What does that achieve? I thought the problem was at the wifi level.
Do you have so many you would run out of DHCP IP addresses?

                • @bargaino: There are plenty of WiFi channels available (not many APs near me) so the separation is partly for security (I can control what each VLAN can access) and partly to play around with (I work in IT).

Even in the middle of the CBD there are very few problems with WiFi channels if you do it properly, so that's not a big factor. Having Ubiquiti gear at home means I probably have more flexibility than people just using their modem's WiFi.

  • Do Hue make smaller bulbs like the LifX minis?
