    Get Reolink, shits on Swann.

Obviously HikVision/Dahua are better but they are in another price bracket. NVR is $750 and each camera is around $200 min.

    A decent video reviewing them:

      Reolink are great.

But I can't recommend their IP cameras at the moment, their latest firmware update completely breaks the shutter adjustment feature which means night time has blurry movement.

Their support also don't have their old firmware's available….

    • +1

I wouldn't trust HikVision/Dahua seeing that they are owned by the Chinese Communist Party. China wants a backdoor to everything and wants control. Even governments around the world are now removing them due to security concerns.

Take We Chat for example. They've basically banned all social media so that they can create their own and monitor and censor everything. You can't even talk about the coronavirus on we chat. They even have a keyword list to see if your talking s**t about their government.

Heres a tip. Never buy anything made by a Chinese company without doing extensive research and pen-testing.

Thanks for a well articulated and accurate comment on something many pass off as bs.

It's awful to think how strong of an influence China has already placed within governments and digital infrastructure. We haven't seen the tip of the iceberg sadly. That's why I've never understood the appeal of xiaomi products. Each to their own I guess

        • +2

People don't pass this off as BS (well some people might I guess). The BS is that if you think your information is safe with Google and apple you are deluded, the US has been proven to do all the same spying. The only reason the five eyes are complaining about Huawei 5g is because it breaks their monopolyy on spying, if Huawei is getting orders from western governments to spy on their own people, it's easy to see how it would be big news if that was leaked to the media every time. Rather than lose their spying monopoly, they would rather say ”hey look over there, it's the bogey man" when the truth is they are just as bad.

The other factor is in this case the Chinese don't care about you claiming insurance on the break in at your house/place of business, so why you think one thing is better than another is beyond me.

          • -2

@Jackson: False equivalence my friend! We're all well aware of Google and Apples activities. It seems you have difficulties commenting without being unpleasant at the end there which is a shame. You've been presumptuous in my opinion!

I love conversing about this stuff in an open and constructive manner. I agree with the foundation of your comment which is definitely accurate (our info isn't safe and shouldn't be trusted with any of these businesses/gov)

            • @FlatulentFrank: No offence meant, but people letting their own governments off the hook and pointing overseas at why not to buy a security system from a Chinese company is quite hilarious to me. The US basically bugged Assange, listens to Merkel's calls, Australia bugged the Papua in negotiations over their natural resources, but the first thing you should do is not buy a leading brand Chinese security system because they care to see what's going on at your place? There's a million reasons to jot let China off the hook, but it's mainly up to their citizens to try and break that deadlock, the best thing you can probably do is support their economy and watch the slow change that is happening already.

          • @Jackson: Here's the difference between China and the US. Data collected from companies in the US are regulated to an extent and many aren't owned by the government hence any monopolistic competition and mass collection of data on specific citizens. Many of the data collected by companies aren't even shared with the government. The data they collect is just to help improve their product and produce better ads.

When a company such as Google or Facebook violates something they are questioned by congress. Whereas in China there is no such thing as China has monopolized its social media market and other IoT markets. So they can commit any crimes they want with no consequences.

Because China owns everything they can force companies to plant backdoor into its product. HikVision, Dahua, and Lenovo are some of the companies they have been exposed for doing this. Whereas a company like Apple is renowned for its privacy and security and has rejected implementing back doors for the US government many times.

When it comes to spying, China is trying to create a huge database. Reminiscent of 'God's Eye' in the movie Fast and Furious. What looks Hollywood can be a very real thing if you have the computing power and database which China has. Most of China's CCTV is AI-enabled meaning they can track any individual based on the image of their license card or ID.

China plans to spy on other individuals and governments around the world to expand its array is simple.
            - Implement Backdoors
            - Scan the internet for open or exposed databases
            - Physical Spying
            - Satellite
            - Sell electronic components with exposed vulnerability for easy reverse engineering
            - Sell cheap phones to act as information gathering devices such as gathering video, voice, location, WiFi and more

Don't you find it weird that when you visit China they force you to give them your phone? This is so that they can install a background application to monitor all your actions.

Although the chances of China looking at your CCTV live stream is minimal. The fact that they have access to it is concerning and just provides them with more spying resources. So why betray your home country and act as Chinese spies for them.

The reason there are so many devices made in China and why it's cheap is because they don't care about their citizens and the minimum wage is essentially nonexistent in China. I mean China makes it legal for 4-year-olds to work in factories instead of being in schools which is wrong on so many levels. This is why we are able to purchase Xiaomi products for dirt cheap. I think it was reported that they only make 10 cents an hour. The pay rate is so bad that many of its citizens jump off buildings and instead of raising the minimum wage. China installs nets around its building.

            • @No Username: Not looking to get into a long drawn out argument on this, but if you think questions from Congress after the fact is anything but theatre you’d be wrong IMO. Also IMO, what you are complaining about is largely what most westerners seem to complain about with foreign countries. Instead of saying how lucky we are and how can we help them get to where we are socially and economically, we say how bad they are and boycott their product. I don't think it's helpful, and I think it's tantamount to complaining about why caveman uses a club and why he hasn't invented the wheel yet. There's lots of things wrong over there, and there's lots of things wrong over here too.

  • Are these IP cams ?

    • +1

No, they use analog HD over coax, I kid not. Same cable as long ago for SD systems.
So the digital compression is done in the DVR, not the camera.

  • How much is this kit at bunnings?

  • +1

    Price beat $540 from Bunnings?

    • They don’t. This is a special order

I had 2 swann outdoor wire free cams. One got water in it and never worked since. App is rubbish.

Only positive is the night vision distance, but the res is so poor it could never be used to identify anything.

I wouldn't buy swann again of any kind.

  • Can you see previous motion detected videos via app?

  • Do these require internet access?

    • +1

No, you can just record to local HDD. App can connect over LAN.

  • +1

OP, do you have any deal on NVRs?

    • I am also looking for just NVR from Swann.

  • +1

A shame it isn’t POE. Makes it a pain in the ass when you want to change the cameras in a few years but retain the cabling.

    • Makes it a pain in the ass when you want to change the cameras in a few years

But it is great for people who want to upgrade an old system. No new cables needed!
If starting from scratch, it may be best to install ethernet.
It is possible to connect these cameras over ethernet instead of coax, using suitable adaptors. But not IP cams over coax. (not easily anyway)

      • Really, do you know how easy it would be to run these cameras off POE?

        • +2

The cameras are 12V, and standard PoE is higher. But no problem doing 12V if you want. Then you just need a 5.5mm connector - cheap as chips on ebay etc.
The analog video over ethernet needs a balun as the characteristic impedance of ethernet is different to coax.

What is wrong with using the supplied cables? When installing them, you could also pull some cat6 for future upgrades.

  • OP, any deal for SWDVK-855804WL system? I am after 4 camera system

refer to be my comment above

  • Hi OP, does each camera require individual power or is that sent through the same AV cable from the recorder?

    • Hi, Each camera requires power. The power is supplied via a splitter cable that is plugged into a single power adapter. Both splitter & adaptor are supplied with the unit. Please note each camera uses a seperate 18 metre coax cable also supplied for video.

      • Thanks for the reply, looks to me that the power cables are not included and may need to be purchased separately?

  • Why spend this much !! Guys check out Wyze cam.
    The best for the price.
    Highly recommended!!!

How is that even remotely related to this setup ? No internal large storage, 1080p vs 4k, NO light on each camera and that camera isn't designed for external use.
