  • Do they have continuous monitoring? I’m guessing, No. just motion detection and recording ?

    • Mine hasn't arrived yet, but other users reported it has only motion detection.

    • +7

If it's battery powered, it's almost always a no

      • -4

Except these are powered 24/7 continuously, there's no reason why they can't and I own a VIGI NVR so I know mine will be (first TP cam, their NVR made me curious)

        • +3

          Sun at night….?!

          • -5

@DannyBoy: Battery at night *audience gasps in amazement*

          • @DannyBoy:

            Features:
            Uninterrupted Power Supply

45 Minutes of daily direct sunlight ensures all-day monitoring..

            Full-Colour View, Day and Night

            • +1

@parad0x: Mate that '45 Minutes of daily direct sunlight ensures all-day monitoring' is only for motion based based work. If it was continuously recording it won't last all day

              • @ninohax: Yes, quite literally the use case for this camera, so what's the issue?

Won't? You sure about that? What's your source? I have a Rep from TP-Link themselves saying it would likely last upto a week, and I don't think too much consideration was given for the solar factor into that equation because for 6hours a day right now, it would use nothing and during summar it will have no problems. But that aside…

For what purpose do require surveillance footage when there is no movement exactly?

If you have any answers to that question you want to look at something other than the bottom of a budget line, from a budget brand, along with foregoing WiFi, if you have legitimate security concerns or require your cameras to behave in a predictable manner as much of the time as possible. I can say beyond reasonable doubt that consumer grade Wifi is not fit for handling long distance streaming recordings from multiple sources in addition to the normal load being placed on it. Not only is it terrible for performance of the whole of your wireless network, it's extremely insecure. Jamming is within reach of savvy thieves, interception an monitoring in reach of people you don't want controlling your surveillance.

I do have to stand corrected, regarding the ability to enable 24/7 via NVR, as it's Tapo not VIGI and TP-LINK killed the workaround to this descrepancy, and rightly so. No $60 camera with a battery and Wifi performs 24/7.

Analogous to there being a reason only super/hyper cars race LeMans - they're specifically designed for that purpose, and your insurance failing to pay out when your road car bursts into flames a couple of hours in - this is not the the proper use of a production car.

                Hope that clears things up.

        • Most of these solar battery models get their operating timeframes assuming they are doing event-only recording & are not streaming. They shut off most of their functionality to extend runtimes to the advertised figures.

    • Motion detected monitoring as far as I could find

    • +2

I have one and it doesnt. Great motion detection and recording tough.

    • +1

No it can't record continuously just motion detection. That is the drawback of having a battery powered camera

  • Can this detect a movement and then turn on the light continuously for like 10 seconds?

    • -4

      I don't think this has a light

      • +1

        Has a build in spotlight

        • Oh cool NVM couldn't see it from the spec

    • +1

Yes, can even make the alarm trigger too via the app!

      • Thansk i check but the light is blinking not continuous bright light

    • I have the tapo app for my lights so I was having a poke around, there are ways to set it up so when an "event" happens on your tapo camera it can turn on tapo lights that are on the property if that's what you were after.

      • thanks but no i mean to turn on the light on this particular camera, but turn on completely not blinking

    • Has a spotlight built in, but I personally couldn't get it to trigger with movements.

  • Wow. This kit is getting cheaper and cheaper. Bugger I paid $73 each for 3 kits just a couple of weeks ago. 😒

    • +1

I got three kits about 3 months ago for $112 on special and was pretty happy with that.
Was waiitng for them to come down from $128ish at the time which was the normal.price from what i could see.

      • Review?

        • +2

For this price it's great value.
I've had to reset a camera once or twice in the first month but nothing since.
I'm running them outdoors off a wifi extender about 50m from the house.
Solar panel keeps them at 100% easily but I may only get 10 to 30 hits a day so hardly a heavy user.
Footage is good enough for me and I like that I don't need a subscription.

      • Wow.. thanks a great price. Where and what occasion/sale was it? If that price comes up again, I'll grab another 3 pack.

        • Sorry. That was $112 each at the semi frequent sale price. Not on sale price was often $130-150 at different retailers.
The multipack without solar panels did often go a good price but i needed solar panels so was stuck waiting.

  • How does this compare with Argus 3 Pro with Solar Panel?

    • -1

Grapefruit and prune juice VS lobster Moreton Bay bugs and fresh oysters

    • Doesn't hold a candle to it

  • good price

  • -1

Good guys won't price beat this?

    • +1

There was already a pricebeat post @ GG for this exact model about a fortnight ago, it's not even actually showing this model on the GG website anymore (at least for me in QLD). If you can still see it on the website where you are, they will price beat over the phone, if the button online isn't showing.

      • Thanks, yeah it's showing in stock in WA but price beat button didn't work. Will have to call up.

  • -1

    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/tp-link-ta…

I think this is the same. Will Officeworks pricebeat a Bunnings order?

    • -3

That's what their price beat says… But they may take issue that it's online only I believe

      • Special orders can be done in store, doesnt have to be online.

    • +1

Special orders might be exclusion, but no harm give it a try.

    • I can confirm OW price beats by 5% bringing it to $63.64.
I called and placed the order over the phone and ready for collection - faster than bunnings.

    • Officeworks price beat it for us.

  • Does this use WiFi 6? It says cloud storage, does it allow storage to your own NVR?

    • Definitely not, and no. The only access you have is via the app, and only when the camera is on (I don't think there's even manual wake for this model)

  • Is the software good without having to pay a monthly fee?

    • +1

      It’s alright tbh

    • I have several tapo cameras + other tapo products all configured on their app and as far as software from security camera companies go I think it's pretty good (I would argue it's better than eufy, which I also happen to have).

      • I have 2 cams and just bought this one, so am basically gonna do the same as you. Do you store locally to each device on card? Or do you store in cloud and pay the subscription? Or can you store on their hub product and have data feed to that via wifi? Thanks

        • +1

I simply just use SD cards in each of my cameras, still get the functionality (such as saving footage to your smartphone via wifi) and notifications all the same as using the cloud but obviously it has the drawbacks of needing to pay for the card for each unit, and the fact that nefarious people could remove the card and you would be left without any trace of any footage but $15 a month for cloud storage is pretty steep imo.

I'm not actually sure about the functionality with the tapo hub as I actually already have a separate controller and hub for all my smart products (I have too many smart products). But I would assume it would be a sort of intermediate option between having sd cards in every camera and cloud storage, acts as a centralised data storage option for all the cameras in your home, rather than having sd cards in each and mostly removes that issue of having the sd cards removed and stolen from the cameras.

      • So all functions are available without a monthly payment? Things like say, pet recognition, person detection, areas to monitor (so you can block a tree that moves all the time) , things like that.

        • Yes this is built in to most any camera sensor these days.

Eg. ESP-CAM a sub $10 wireless, Bluetooth microprocessor with a host of features that make up many consumer smart devices, is capable of facial recognition entirely on device.

          • @parad0x: I mean the camera OP has listed.
The camera we have (no idea of brand) is similar to OPs with solar etc, but to do zoning, person sense, pets … thats all only with a subscription. The camera and software is capable but most is a paid service.

            • @PVA: The subscription is basically just for unlimited cloud storage and some (mostly superfluous) features, all the actual functions that are included with the camera do not require the subscription service, much better than Arlo…

            • @PVA: Then it's not happening on the camera, it's a cloud service

              • @parad0x: Thats exactly what ive asked….what functions are free and whats part of the subscription?

I havent seen one that doesnt need a paid subscription to get all functions.

                • @PVA: And I've NEVER owned one that does. Stop buying cheap cameras subsidised with subscription services or overpriced hardware that charge a premium ad they expect anyone who buys their product automatically thinks they're required to pay.

There are more.Free options than paid but paid services offer more options bundled than.Simple detection in.addito to custom detections.

                  * Cloud Storage: Storing days, weeks, or months of video footage in the cloud is resource-intensive for the provider.

                  * Feature Development & Updates: Subscriptions fund ongoing research, development, and delivery of new AI features, bug fixes, and security updates.
                  * Bandwidth & Infrastructure: Maintaining the cloud infrastructure to support millions of cameras and process vast amounts of video data is costly.
                  * Customer Support & Warranty: Subscriptions often include enhanced customer support and extended warranties.
                  * Professional Monitoring: Some subscriptions bundle AI features with 24/7 professional monitoring services.

Smart person detection? Would it work to record anyone else besides me?

    • +4

Now just need a deal on stud finders !

    • Are you sure you have tested itnto work on you?

    • +1

Ive got smart person detection activated, each time i walk past it doesn't work…

      • Have you met a kid who says he can see dead people?

  • -2

Pity the solar panel is not detachable with a long cable.

    • +1

But pictures show camera separated from the solar panel

    • +3

The solar panel is detachable, the camera, panel, mount and cable all come individually packaged in the box. There is also nothing stopping you from using a longer cord since the panel and camera both send/receive power from usb-c, I have a 5m usb-c cable connecting my solar panel to the camera so I can have the panel sitting on the roof in full exposed sun whilst my camera is in an eve which otherwise would not get enough light.

      • +1

Exactly the same situation for me, except I find it kind of annoying that the solar panel doesn't come with any fixable wall mount of its own.

        • I agree, wouldn't have hurt to throw in the option to have separate mounting for each component, can't imagine it would cost that much more to do.

          • +1

@UberZ: It has this option built in. You detach camera from mount and comes with extension connection adaptor.

            • @grassyass: But no separate mount for the solar panel if you are looking to fix it to something a few metres away.

              • +1

@werdplaya58: Yeah the solar panel stays on the original larger mount. The camera has a circular mount and they give you a plastic cover to put on the larger mount to cover the place where the camera originally was. Can send you pics if it helps.

              • @werdplaya58: Is it a regular 1/4" thread?

The best thing to substitute for this is Orion wall and gutter mounts. They're about $12 from bunnings, they're the defacto quick cheap and easy mounting hardware for many

                • @parad0x: Silly me, @grassyass is right because I didn't realise the original mount can be separated into two mounts (the smaller mount for the camera is actually just screwed into a larger mount and can be unscrewed).

I'd attached the original larger mount and camera early on then went back to the box and found nothing else.

To your point, there are two options for mounting the camera, via an adapter onto the supplied mount, and also there is a screw hole on the base of the camera which looks to allow for a 1/4" thread mount like you suggested.

              • @werdplaya58: It's like a 2 in 1 mount. The circle camera bit comes off and you cover that part with a provided cover. Then the main bigger bit can be used purely for the solar panel. Meaning you can mount both the camera and solar panel however far apart you want (provided you have a cable to link them).

            • @grassyass: You're 100% right, my scatterbrain assumed that I had bought that adaptor separately (I really need to keep track of my purchases).

          • @UberZ: Hung mine up on a hook.. you can kind of use the attachment that connects to the back of it to catch the hook.

            • @werdplaya58: How did you attach the hook? if you don't mind me asking, i've been looking for some mounting ideas which don't involve screwing/nailing/ other invasive methods, have tried the adhesive route but it is a pain trying to get a good bond on brick when hook is 3m off the ground and the wall is painted with textured coating.

              • @UberZ: In my case it was just a screw in hook into the timber fascia board. The camera was located on the front corner of the house under an awning, so ran the cord to the solar panel around the side of the house.

  • +2

Click and Collect is available saving $10 delivery fee, should be in the title.

  • -5

Only problem with this one is that it relies on Solar for battery, nothings built in to supply when theres no solar power.

    • +5

      There is battery inside

    • +1

You can plug a power supply in where the solar panel feed normally goes. These same cameras are sold this way.

    • All solar device, after one year, the battery tends to go down and if you can't replace expensive battery, it's good for the bin.

      • Even the cheap Amazon PTZ camera I bought a few years back is still going strong so I guess my experience differs to yours.

  • -4

Special orders is a disaster, avoid it. I have made two special orders and both items never arrived at bunnings. And to top it off i had to go through hell to get my money back as in store they had no idea how to refund it.

  • Can this be attached to a concrete wall without screws? Any recommendations to fix it properly?

  • Here is a silly question for the owners. When using local mode with memory SD card. Does it allow you to access recordings in the SD card without having to remove the SD from the camera? Say using your phone or a website.

    • +5

Yes you can, on the Tapo app there is a menu where you can playback previous recordings.

  • Wth seems similar to eufy s340. Whats the catch

    • You're always up for catches Ricky. You never drop one ;)

  • Has anyone used these in home assistant to trigger continuous monitoring? Thanks

  • -1

The c460 4k has continues recording but it is $183.

  • +1

Don't buy this… I bought one and it only lasted for 3 months due to water ingress. Terrible experience

  • Does this feed in to home assistant for events or latest feed when or i can activate oitside lights?

  • I just wish it didnt require drilling to be mounted. The places I'd like to put it would mean drilling into square metal poles, would rather not create a spot for water to get in.

  • No stocks in WA but JB Hi-Fi price matched. The first person didn't price match it because there was no stocks but the second person did. Good luck

  • I'm considering a product that claims "45 minutes of daily direct sunlight can support a full 24 hours of operation." My main concern is, can this really sustain 24/7 continuous streaming? With my Frigate and Home Assistant setup, I'd be checking feeds frequently and recording to my PC, demanding constant power. I find the "45 minutes of sunlight for 24h" claim quite optimistic for this kind of heavy usage. Has anyone used this product, or a similar solar-powered camera, for continuous streaming and can share their actual experience?

    • +1

It gets its long operating times by being on a kind of standby where it is still recording to its internal SD card. Some will give a standby figure that only waits for a person detection event & only then starts recording.

For these solar battery cameras most models shut off a lot of functionality to extend operating life. Every time you connect to it you will bring it out of standby & drastically increase energy usage.
