Extra 20GB Data for Postpaid / 10GB Data for Prepaid Mobile Customers in April 2020 @ Optus

1631

Optus recently announced they will offer Postpaid mobile customers a one-off add-on of 20GB of data during April 2020. Eligible Prepaid customers that recharge with $40 or more during April will also receive 10GB of extra data.

More information will be available through the MyOptus App by Friday 20 March 2020.

Apparently it’s to help support the transition to working remotely with the spread of the COVID-19 virus. This comes after Telstra recently asked all their Australian-based office staff to work from home until at least the end of the month. https://www.itnews.com.au/news/telstra-tells-australian-offi…

with all that toilet paper and extra internet what can I do hmmmm

wonder if hand cream is on sale…

    • I chuckled

      • I white knuckled

    • Hand cream isn't going to wipe your arse….

      Edit: Oh wait… Ah!

I you are thinking about getting prepaid and are considering Boost vs Optus and don't need overseas calls, go with Optus. They give the same (excellent IME) customer service as regular postpaid customers.

Boost on the other hand, despite being a Telstra, offers almost no support, just a call centre in the Philippines. No access to physical stores. Their CS sucks in my painful experience. YMMV.

    • +1

Optus has better international routing on mobile data from Perth.
Optus has marginally better reception than boost.
I contacted optus because my new number was recieving hastling relentless calls from debt collectors for the previous holder, they changed the number within 10 minutes.

      • They are good, generally.

      • Boost has Telstra's full network, and Telstra has the best reception in Australia.

While you may find in some areas Optus has better reception than Australia, the same goes for Telstra too.

  • +4

Cool. Now to fix their somewhat ridiculously bad reception. So many points during my commute my mobile data completely drops out 😔

    • What phone are you using? Does it have Band 28 4G? I've found Optus to be quite good until you really get out of the city.

  • I still have an Optus $0 plan from this deal nearly four years ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/251962

I'm guessing no free 20GB on that, not that I need it. The SIM card sits in a drawer 99% of the time.

    • Lol I have the same plan for parking my previous mobile number in case I ever wanted to use it again (unlikely after all these years). Problem is, I have no idea where I put the SIM now.

      • +1

Haha I have an old number that's 6789 with all doubles I put on Jeenee on the $8.90 plan. I haven't used the number for over 10 years. I just can't part with it. I was working at Vodafone and found it on a prepaid starter kit. Keeping it going just in case lol

    • Seems to fit the eligibility criteria

  • +1

Ill pop that extra 20GB on top of the 500GB I have with my Optus One plan lol

    • unfortunately this is not applicable on home wireless broadband

  • +2

Useless. Their coverage is shit in Sydney Metro.
Yes, I’ve seen the maps… and I live in reality. Blackspots everywhere.

    • terrible on train line
south coast, every second stop is a black stop :(

    • +2

Yet people still compare it apples for apples with Telstra whenever there's a Telstra mobile plan posted.

There's a reason why I'm happy to pay a premium for my mobile coverage with Telstra and why I'm happy to have Optus 4G as my home internet.

  • My plan rolls over mid month. If I sign up now, do I lose the 20gb when the new period tick over? and if I sign up after it rolls over, do i get it in May? Curious to know because when you switch plans like an upgrade, your data generally refreshes (in my experience anyways)

  • this is great, i have to use my phone to tether while work phone offline and nbn keeps crapping out

  • +1

How is this activated? Can't see any info on my app

    • +3

      It's in the Add-ons -> data section. 20GB for $0.00

    • Same, cant find anything. Dont see any "Add ons" section in app either.

      • +5

Click into 'Service' on the bottom menu and then "Add-ons' is at the top.

  • THANK you

  • Can confirm Optus coverage is shit, moved in my new apartment only 8km from Sydney CBD, Nearly no reception at home

  • 4G home wireless broadband plans are not eligible and you cannot even upgrade from the 500 GB cap. C'mon Optus - it's 2020!

  • Confirmed converage and reception of optus is totally useless, somehow I always got disconnected and interrupt call in Northside Brisbane. Telstra and Vodafone always full bar.

  • Love me some free data..

  • -1

Not great for Prepaid when they are setting conditions that you must recharge to get free data. Eg, if you are on the epic 12month plan.
At least Telstra is offering free data with no condition. (Even Boost customers got it)

  • What? Everyone is staying at home. Who needs another 20GB?

    • +2

People who dont have internet at home?

  • Far too confusing to activate, need to make it prominent like Telstra, especially for the people it will really matter to…

  • Does this come with 5g access?

  • optus gives me 60 gig unlimited, no contract for $39 a month

    • It's $49. what is your source?

      • I have been with optus for 5 years. When I transfered to prepaid (from my contract) I said that I wasnt happy with $49 a month. So they made it $39.
Also, I have 100 MB/sec download plan, unlimited, for $50 a month, no contract for life.
        How did I get it?
I made a huge fuss through online chat, emails and calls.

I always get what I ask for :)

        • NBN for $50 a month?

          • @alz: Yes, 100 MB (the highest tier), for $50 a month, no contract for life

            • @Mickeykozz: I should try that. I have been with them for over 10 years. Any tips?

              • @alz: Simply call them and say that your 'friend' is getting $50 a month for 100 mb a sec and you want that.
then hold your course. Write complaining emails, calls, etc. Go as high as you can.
I went to the general manager of optus :)

    • Yes, 100 MB (the highest tier), for $50 a month, no contract for life

  • Amaysim also gave 10gig for anyone still using them..

  • Yet they're not doing anything for people on 4G broadband…stingy…

  • When I went to activate this it says that the data add-ons automatically renew. Will we have to cancel this add-on before it renews? What’s the cost if you forget? How do you know there’s no cost after the 30 days is up?

  • ONCE THE 20GB IS CONFIRMED, CANCEL THE 20GB ADD-ON STRAIGHT AWAY BECAUSE IT AUTO RENEWS AND WHO KNOWS IF THIS IS FREE NEXT MONTH.
    VERY CHEEKY OPTUS!

    • Its a $0 per month bonus data. It very clearly shows it as $0.00 per month on the mobile ap. I seriously doubt they will up the price on everyone.

      Also, please stop shouting.

      edit: removed sarcasm

      • +1

of course it's showing $0 per month because they are doing it for $0 this month. Don't be surprised by an additional $50 when the 20G is not a free add-on next month or in 2-3 months.

      • How do you know? I wouldn’t trust Optus at all. This is stopping me from adding it too.

        • Because they are not selling a subscription, they're providing a one off 20gb to be applied to your account which is only active for 30 days after activation. The terms and conditions have a clear end date.

Is there any reason why you think they will start charging additional fees beyond the terms specified in the bonus? Was there something in the T&Cs which I missed (e.g. beyond the first 30 days you will be charged $X per month)?

          • -1

@Peelaw: Because it only makes reference to what happens within the first 30 days and that any unused data will be forfeited after that. Those are standard terms for all data add-ons.

Just because they don’t mention that they won’t charge you after the 30 days doesn’t mean they won’t. In fact, they indicate that they will indeed charge you as add-ons are automatically renewed.

  • Anyone know if the add on is available when logging in online, not via app?

  • I'm only half way through a 24mth plan, yet my plan isn't eligible because it's not one of their current plans (grandfathered).

    Bit of a joke really.
