I'd personally shop around for a 2020. New gen cpus, 256 gb base storage and most importantly fixed the godawful cancer keyboard.

RRP is now $1600 so you don't need a huge discount.

    • Judging by the website it's targeted at school kids.

Edu pricing for the new Air on Apple store is like 1.4k + i5 upgrade brings it to 1.5k or so.

Much more bang for your buck.

Jb hi-fi will usually match the 10% educational discount without proof

Thanks, serious question what is the “cancer” keyboard?

      • The 'butterfly' switches keyboard. It's the worst keyboard on a laptop - if dust or dirt gets into the keyboard, then the whole thing just breaks and stops working. Basically, functionality was sacrificed in the name of aesthetic: https://www.macrumors.com/guide/butterfly-keyboard-issues/

        • Ohh.. thought it was a health issue.
Yes my daughter has a 2018 model and the space bar had issues. Apple swapped the whole keyboard out and the replacement is better (different model keyboard), but still that crappy butterfly design.

      • Ones with butterfly switches which fail once dirt or grit get in between the keycaps.

$1699 for the i5 2020 model with 8/256GB is better value IMHO. Even less with education store price.

i would advise people not to buy this model
    1. terrible keyboard that still fails, keys will get stuck when minimal amount of dust gets stuck inside
    2. it has a fan that is not connected via a heat sink and is spinning alone without cooling the cpu, you can see it @ ifixit

it's better to wait for 2020 13 inch equivalent macbook pro which might feature a 14 inch screen

    • Or just go for the 2020 Macbook Air.

      • 2020 still has a fan that is designed that way, so bad cooling as one would expect

        • Is that an issue?

          • @stickymoo: it is not the best cooling method, so they do overheat and since the chip is more powerful in the newer versions, you would want better cooling

    $1419 for a 2019 laptop with a worse processor, terrible keyboard isn’t a deal

Upgrade the processor for $100. i5 quad

This is not a deal. Please buy the new model from the Apple Education store. :)
    Upgrade the processor for $100.

    • Do you have to provide a student ID or something to purchase from the Education store?

Terrible keyboard and tiny storage for $1300+ - this is not a deal in any stretch of the word. Avoid.
