65% alcohol, they recommend 70% at least. Probably still good for cleaning hands though.

    • +15

Should you still mix it with coke before you use it?

      • Let us know once you crunch the numbers what ratio we should use ;)

    • +4

WHO says it needs to be at least 60% not 70%.
But Have it too high a percentage and it evaporates too quick so doesn’t work as well.

    • +2

      60% - 75% is recommended from what I've read.

So at least 60%, not 70%.

      • At least 60% is what WHO recommends.

    • +1

It's important to know that not all alcohols have the same efficacy, depending on ease of acquisition either ethyl or isopropyl alcohol can be used in differing concentrations.

The WHO recommended formulations consists of:

      For Ethanol formulation
      • Ethanol 80% (v/v),
      • Glycerol 1.45% (v/v),
      • Hydrogen peroxide
      0.125% (v/v)

      For Ispropanol or 2-Propanol formulation
      Isopropyl alcohol 75% (v/v),
      • Glycerol 1.45% (v/v),
      • Hydrogen peroxide
      0.125% (v/v)

      https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK144054/

However they also mentioned "The microbicidal activity of the two WHO-recommended formulations was tested by a WHO reference laboratory according to EN standards (EN 1500) (see also Part I, section 10.1.1). Their activity was found to be equivalent to the reference substance (isopropanol 60 % v/v) for hygienic hand antisepsis." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK144054/

Atleast 60% alcohol is meant to be good! i see this one is a liquid not a gel!

    • Is liquid supposed to be superior in viral\bacterial killing action? I thought the gel would be as you'd likely have to use more of the liquid since it evaporates faster.

    • Good for sprays I think, I have some given to me in a couple of spray bottles, these are good for spritzing on your phone or handles or frequently touched surfaces if you don't have wipes at the ready.

  • +13

ah so this is 400mls total still not cheap

    • +7

I remember 2x 1L bottles of isopropyl alcohol for $20 with free delivery (that would have probably cost them $10 to post) before all this started.

Now it's likw 100ml for $15 with free delivery, someone is making huge profits.

      • +1

I remember buying 5L of 99.99% isopropyl alcohol for $10 delivered less than 2 years ago, it was a crazy bargain.

    • +3

Wait till you see their 2x750ml for $55…
This is a blatant money grab because:
      i) This is a non-consumable alcohol rub (denatured and unfit for consumption), hence not subject to the hefty alcohol sales taxes
ii) It is actually easier to produce: No need to use fragrant materials for malting, mashing, fermentation
iii) No need to dilute it as much
iv) No need for ageing like any whiskey would, which means no oak barrels needed
      v) No product description/labeling at the back, meaning that cost is saved having the product audited/lab tested for labeling

Thanks for linking mate, best value alcohol hand gel around atm.

Did some googling, use this code for a 10% discount:
      SIGNUP01

      • It’s only taking 5% off for me.

  • Just ordered some from bearded chap - $11.95 per 100 but is 80% v/v alcohol if anyone wants something with stronger alcohol. Its the strongest i could find, that wad available readily.

    • +1

      Search Mr Black - 80%, $20 for 500mL.

Maybe sold out now, but was available 2 days ago.

      • No stock

    • +10

$120 per litre, are you kidding me?
Higher alcohol % doesn't make it more effective, 60% minimum is all that is required.

      • Yep, too high a percentage and application can be inhibited as it evaporates too quickly.

IMO 80% might not be desirable in a liquid (as opposed to gel). I've used home-made ~75% (about 15% aloe vera gel, and some drops of glycerin) and I think it evaporates a bit too fast, so I end up using more. Around the mid to high 60's is a good spot I've found.

      • $50 per litre. I don’t know if that is better value or not. But math ain’t right.

        • Good pickup, but I was referring to @Jimothy Wongingtons post.

"Stay Safe, Stay Positive, Stay Home. That’s The Spirit"

    Poor choice of words? haha

But in regards to the price, first one I have seen that isn't pre-order, ships from 06/04, although, more on the upper end right now. I guess if you weigh down your absolute need for it now, right?

  • +1

i wonder how it tastes…. looks to be grain alcohol

EDIT: not that I suggest it

CAUTION: Do not consume. Keep out of reach of children. Avoid contact with your eyes. If skin irritation occurs, discontinue use. High flammable. Store in a cool dry place. For advice contact Poisons Information Centre (Phone 131 126) or a doctor. Contains 65% Denatured Ethanol. The SDS for this product is available on request.

Any chance all these shyster hand sanitizer “deals” can be put in a single forum?

They are a dime a dozen.

    • How are you and others storing them, I understand the practical use is to have a small bottle of it on you when touching high traffic (touch) areas (lift buttons, groceries carts etc.) I don't see it being practical to carry around any bottle larger than 50ml so curious as to what others are doing…

  • +1

Minimum 60% is all that is required.
Not that I endorse this product at all.
    Sounds very awkward to use.

A guy was selling 300ml hand sanitisers for $30 each at Gordon Centre - I didn't check the ingredients to see if they were fair dinkum or not. I saw a lady buy 4 bottles!

    • There’s a lot around that are zero alcohol.
They may be fine for killing bacteria but won’t kill the virus.

  • +6

    Found a few others:

    https://synergieskin.com/shop-products/sanitiser-spray/ (120ml, 70%, $15)
    https://www.starhygiene.com.au/star-hygiene-250ml-instant-fo… (250ml, alcohol-free?, $8.75)
    https://stali.com.au/products/st-ali-hand-sanitiser-75-alcoh… (250ml, 75%, $20)
    https://www.nepbio.com/collections/klinrub (200ml, 75%, $12)
    https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/dettol-ant… (250ml, liquid handwash, $3.55)

Haven't bought any, probably shipping costs involved with each, but hopefully it helps!
Think OPs deal is the best value, apart from maybe Officeworks.

    • +1

The ones without alcohol are not recommended, they dont kill the virus.

  • +1

Minimum 60% is required as a disinfectant. Since alcohol evaporates quicker than the other ingredients, the strength will decrease over time. Therefore I think it's probably safer to buy something that is at least 65%+. & if you think your liquid sanitiser is too strong, you can always dilute it with water, aloe vera, glycerin, etc.

    • you can always dilute it with water

      Ensure this isn't tap water!

  • Those were the days ….mhhhh 15 Litre 99% for 25 bucks delivered ….. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/387741

    • How long to stock up at that price again, I use it for cleaning.

      • Probably never from now on.

With Fevermates, use code “ SIGNUP01” for I think 5% discount, not much but it’s still something

    • Thanks - so far have avoided buying things as a precautionary measure, but just had neighbours in the same stairwell at home with confirmed covid19 (building management advised but wouldn't say which unit!) - Stairwell has been sanitised but totally unsure if neighbour is doing the right thing!. Thought it's best having some available - if nothing else, to protect others..

I got the recent deal with shipping due in May (Hope it happens) but great one OP. Nice to see our distilleries join the effort against Covid-19.

One word of caution though. When buying the 750 ml+ sizes, be careful with storing them. These are highly flammable.

  • Thanks OP. Picked up max quantity of 3 x.

  • +16

You can also use FEVER25 and get 25% off on fevermates, with a max of 4 bottles, work out approx $61 delivered for 2L in Metro area.

    • Thanks mate! Bought.
This should be in its own thread ;)

    • Thanks, bought some for myself and family

For anybody wondering, these are $14.95 each for 500ml
      With 25% discount as above.
      Max purchase of 4
Only shipping option is express at $16.95 and is not discounted.

      1 is $28.16 shipped ($28.16 each)
      2 is $39.38 shipped ($19.69 each)
      3 is $50.59 shipped ($16.86 each)
      4 is $61.80 shipped ($15.45 each)

    • +1

Thanks, real deal is in the comments!

    • +5

I don't think the FEVER25 code is working anymore.

      • Code no longer valid. :(

      • Isn't the fevermates offer still cheaper even without the 25% off code.

      • +1

Not valid anymore, but still made my order. "Fake OZ bargainer"

    • Damn I just placed an order with the 5% discount code.

  • I mix 100% iso three parts to one part aloe gel. But the gel part clumps up in the alcohol in a little rubber ball so I suspect I’m left with just the aloe juice and a slightly higher alcohol content than intended. I wonder if aloe juice is the way to go instead of gel at all.

    • Have you tried adding the alcohol slowly to the gel (instead of gel to alcohol). You also have to whisk the mixture like a madman, or just use an electric mixer

      • I did for the second batch. The first batch I shook in a big jug and that actually made it a bit cloudy and I think a little smooth on the skin. I think 75% is just too much. I read that there is a thickener that can tolerate it but why not just make it a liquid sanitiser instead.

    • try using glycerol/glycerine, don't need as much (10-20% is enough) but it is starting suffer the same price gouging fate.

  • Damn Flanders!

  • -1

You're better off just buying vodka! Double the purpose.

    • -1

No you aren’t, no where near high enough alcohol.

Unfortunately out of stock at the moment

  • Melbourne based distillery change business to support sanitiser needs.

Not that much of a change. This is made from the 'head' and 'tailings' from the gin, which is normally just waste to be thrown away (as it's poisonous).

Not as bad as Yakult though, who found a way to get people to pay good money for waste product that normally went to dairy farmers for their cows to consume.

    • so could this contain methanol from the heads? isn't that bad?

      found this:
"Methanol is not used in hand sanitizer because it is toxic and is absorbed through the skin."

      and this:
"Methanol as an Unlisted Ingredient in Supposedly Alcohol-Based Hand Rub Can Pose Serious Health Risk."
      https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29987197

    • Out of stock for delivery, and no stock in local stores.

      • Weird… My bad :(

  • +1
    • Expected release date is 11th May 2020

  • Not Melbourne - but I think there might be some craft gin distilleries down there. Here in Brisbane, there are some Gin, and Rum manufacturers doing 80% alcohol sanitizer - we are using Brisbane distillery - in bulk works out to as low as $16.25 a litre - We have a friend who is buying 20L a week and onselling to friends and family - no markup.

Interestingly, some of the boutique alcohol places depend on fancy bottles - which come out of europe and are unobtainable at the moment. They offer a discount for "refills" - they wash and sterilize.

  • Any distilleries around Sydney area available for this kind of products?

  • +2

I hope they go out of business. Dodgy greedy bastards…

  • +1

I've just ordered 500ml for $29.95, including delivery to Queanbeyan (Canberra area), from this Hunter Valley mob
    https://www.hunterdistillery.com.au/products/hand-sanitiser/…

    • I don't think this is a gel. You want gel as you only have to add to one palm, and it's sticky enough not to fall off hands when covering both hands front and back. With liquids, that's more difficult, it will want to drip off, but you could use a sprayer

    • This one turns out $59.9/L, more expensive than $55/1.5L

  • -1

    Rip off.

  • Are they using their own distilled alcohol or are they just bulk buying alcohol from somewhere like Manildra at a few dollars a litre and just watering it down, bottling it then selling it off at $80/l of alcohol as hand sanitizer.
