I was just looking on eBay today at $300 - $400 android phones. This is a good price for AU stock, but i'd prefer to pay $329 for a Samsung Google Nexus S

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/350491732641?ssPageName=STRK:MEWA…

The main difference between the two is the Nexus S's PowerVR SGX540 graphics card is superior to the desire Z's Adreno 205 GPU, and it has 1GHz processor compared to an 800MHz CPU. Oh and a 4" screen compared to a 3.7"

Still a +ve from me for the price.

You can't compare HTC Desire Z with Samsung Nexus, the desire Z has keyboard, You either want a keyboard or not, and also Desire Z support external MicroSD.

You can compare in detail http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=3421&idPhone2=…

        • +4

Actually he's right, you cant compare a phone with a keyboard with one that doesnt have one. Because regardless of all the other specs, the presence (or lack of) a keyboard will ultimately be a dealbreaker if you dont (or do) want one.

        • +2

          Hardware keyboard >>>>> software keyboard.

Not to mention when the soft keyboard is up, it takes up about half the screen.

        • Also the Nexus has a Super AMOLED screen compared to a Super LCD.

Nah, most of them have LCDs, like mine. (i9023)
There aren't as many LEDs (i9020) and when they are selling the LED screens, they usually charge more, up to $400.

@scrimshaw Having owned an E72 and typed on an N97, I have to say Swype >> phone keyboard.

    • Thanks for sharing. Is it the right time to buy or wait. I am happy with the legend. want a good deal to replace it after my contract.

      • +1

I don't think this is the right time to buy.
Few phones will be release within a month or 2. So the price of these phone will drop. (I'm hoping)

        • +1

Theres always a new phone in a couple months, given that samsung, htc, apple all have their own cycles. Just pull the trigger if you want this one.

        • +1

the nexus s price will drop as soon as the prime comes out. And I'm cursing myself again for getting the Galaxy S2 when I knew the Prime or the Note will be out in a bit more than a month

        • SG Note isn't out until Q1. hopefully the Nexus Prime makes an appearance in Oct, if not I'll "just" get the Note lol. Good times for top end phones right now.

But yeah, if you need a kbd, this Desire Z is still a great option especially for the price.

        • new phones I was talking about was Nexus Prime and iPhone 5

        • SG Note and Nexus Prime are not for everyone though — I think those are simply too big. Then again I've never owned a phone with 4+" display…

        • Me either scotty.

With the Note, I consider it to be more of a micro-Tablet, so am prepared to give it a decent go as a do-all device. this blew me away today, you can't even do that on a big tablet…
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMvMWyXldzk

With the Prime, reports say it has no front buttons, so it shouldn't actually be any bigger than a buttoned phone.

But it all hinges on the Prime having WXGA. If it aint got it, I'll get the Note for sure.

        • I think with the screen, you get used to it. At the start everyone needs to get used to the feel of the device(and I do mean a phone), and by the weeks end, you get used to it.

          @Stumo, I'm guessing you're an artist then?

        • @Stumo, I'm guessing you're an artist then?

Yeah a bullsh1t artist lol. But seriously, yes, I can hold my own with a pencil and paper just fine.

  • Couple questions:
    1) What version of Android is installed out of the box? (If not 2.3, can it be updated to 2.3?)
    2) You say it's AU stock but I see no mention of HSDPA 850MHz/NextG compatibility, which is one of the main reasons for preferring AU stock (the other being warranty). Is it compatible?

Looks like a pretty good deal otherwise, but having NextG and (at least the ability to upgrade to) Android 2.3 are deal breakers for me.

    • +1

Android OS, v2.2 (Froyo), upgradable to v2.3
      Stated in GSMArena

    • Not all phones contact NextG support. For instance, your statement means that the phones provided by non-telstra phone provided by other phone companies arent't AU stock which is obviously false.

      • I know not all phones support NextG, that's why I asked.
I never implied that phones without NextG aren't AU stock, only that NextG support (HSDPA 850Mhz) is one of the few reasons to care where the product comes from. Sorry if you read that differently.

    • Network Support: 2G Quadband, 3G, 900Mhz

    • I have had a Desire Z since March,
it came with 2.2 and is now running 2.3.3 via it's auto update, no extra effort on my part.
I would recommend the phone (I personally prefer the hardware keyboards, but would have been better to have and extra row with numbers like the Touch Pro)

      • like the milestone 3… dual core, 1ghz and 5 row keyboard, only downer is that its 512MB ram…

  • Good deal. If it didn't carry vodafone branding and bloatware, it would be an excellent deal.

  • Not to be a tool, but if you want to use your phone for more then calling, spend more then less. The better specs now the more you can do with it in 3 years time.

Eg. Spend ~$550 not $350 and get the best you can. An idea anyway.

  • my wife has one of these phones, i love it, she's not so keen,
    facebook,
    weather/time app,
    and the keyboard
    make this pretty good…
probably not as fast as newer phones, good for the optus network (900/2100)

i hear the galaxy s2 has a qwerty keyboard version on the way, also the milestone 3 has a 5 row keyboard.. thats what i have my eye on… shame it only has 512MB of ram…

any questions shoot them across… hers is now running 2.3 (OTA update)
didnt make too big a difference
though we did have an issue for a while there when she would press the S key and it would bring up a search, g google… etc… perticually annoying when your tyring to type an SMS, bug in the hot keys only seemed to surface when she updated to 2.3

other than that the HTC sense is pretty awesome… no swype though.

  • It is $324.00 here (free shipping too) and may be no branding.
