Youtube - yes but I think limited to 1080p.
Here is a good source of information about the player Whirlpool Forum

        10 year old plasma isn't 4k anyway

        • -7

But 10 year old 1080P plasma has better picture quality than 4K LCD.

          • +1

@dreamscene: Prefer my 4K OLED C9 to my (just few yrs old) plasma.

        • 10 year old plasma isn't 4k anyway

There are more advantages to the 4K model than the just 4K output.

Thanks OP. Used my Concierge Credit to make the price down to $169

    • isn’t concierge credit $20?

There's this media player that you can run on it called 'Infuse' and it's 'subjectively' the best thing ever for hoarders. Sure there is Kodi/VLC on Android offerings, but it's like comparing Rooney M. (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) to Scarlett J. (Ghost in the Shell). I have Infuse hooked up to a NAS and the media library is a beautiful thing to behold and such a pleasure to use. It auto-magically retrieves metadata for your files and I have not seen any other product handle the tv series experience better (season and episode navigation).

    • +2

Infuse is another $70 or so though, right? But yes, its beautiful.

      • Lifetime is around $90. We're on the $15 annual plan though :)

        • $90 now? Geez. I bought it like two years ago for ~$50, prior to that it was about ~$20.

          • +2

@no not me: Plex does the same thing and is free (as long as you dont want to stream your content over the internet to remote devices)

            • @Laserface: Yeah, agree, Infuse might be a great option if you already own an AppleTV. Yes, it is smoother and better looking than Plex, but effectively Plex accomplishes exactly the same thing for free.

            • @Laserface: Plex can’t play certain audio files properly so will stream a reduced quality transcode most of the time. Infuse simply plays the file as it has paid the audio royalties.

    • Currently planning my NAS/Homeserver/Media setup at the moment. How does infuse compare to something like Plex on my Mi Box S?

      • +1

It doesn't. Infuse does everything on the client device and it's just a supercharged media viewer like Kodi while Plex runs off the server. Plex is good for large collections and easy access for external users while infuse isn't.

        • So Infuse can't play media over the network? Currently not happy with the new plex player in my Android TV box as it feels a bit laggy IMO. Just thought I can switch over to this in the probably future. Thanks!

          • +1

@monchee: Infuse can link to a Plex library and play over the network or internet. I find this the best of both worlds as it plays more formats directly than the Plex client but still uses the Plex library and media matching.

          • @monchee: It can play media via network just like Kodi does as long as you set up the shares. Why don't you go install Kodi on your MiBox and see? Infuse is pretty much like it but less features.

BTW, Infuse is iOS only i THINK and Kodi isn't on iOS (officially, without needing to jailbreak) so it's the only real option for Apple users.

Edited: Ohh I forgot Infuse CAN use Plex servers, Just gave it a try on my Apple TV 4K and not impressed. I used the freeware Infuse app.

            • +3

@ickyboo: MrMC on AppleTV is KODI. Check it out.

              • @altitudinous: ohh.. Thanks for heads up!

                Going to install now!

              • @altitudinous: Thanks! I'll check it out. I'll start with the Free version and then maybe get the paid version. All I need is for it to play from my NAS box.

            • +1

@ickyboo: It's not the same at all - the Plex player only supports the codecs on the device. So the Plex Server will transcode an avi file, for example, because it's not natively supported on the Apple TV. Infuse comes baked with a whole swath of codec support. It's useful if your server doesn't have enough grunt to transcode a 1080p file, it can just stream it in whatever codec and likely Infuse supports it.

        • If you've got a NAS wouldn't you want to run the encoding on the NAS itself? I know it's dependant on the abilities of the NAS itself but seems counter intuitive to bring the encoding to the client side.

          • @massafiri: For best results on a multi-user platform - get the client to transcode.

I just setup FreeNAS on my old gen 2 I5 desktop. Works like a charm with Plex. Copied my movies into the storage drive. No need for a separate NAS server. Make use of any old pc lying around and convert that using FreeNAS.

        • That's the plan! Just switched to a Ryzen rig and waiting for the release of the NZXT H1 in our shores. Once it's out, I can put my old parts in the Node 304 that I'm temporarily using and convert that to a NAS. Haven't decided between OMV and UnRaid. Not looking at FreeNAS since I was told that it's for the advanced users.

          • @monchee: I just want a NAS to store my files and movies. With the Plex plugin works like a charm. That’s all I need. :)

          • @monchee: Don't be too put off, I knew nothing about FreeNAS and very little about networking and software etc. I was still able to build a great Freenas server just using guides on their forums. It took more effort than building a normal windows PC but current Freenas UI is relatively easy to understand.
Though in the end I just set the Freenas server to handling backups for all our devices and set up Plex on a spare parts windows PC, hooking that up to our main TV. Having a proper PC attached to that TV gives us a lot of options.

        • I've been running three FreeNAS instances for many years. Over time, UI has changed a lot so that less experienced people can use it.
Plex server is a native (iXsystems) plugin and is a breeze to set it up and use it.
As pointed out earlier, you can turn any old PC into a FreeNAS box. Via plugins, this box can then become a server for pretty much anything you can think of via plugins.
As it runs on FreeBSD UNIX (like PS4 for example), it's rock-solid stable and very reliable. It just works!

For $10 (or so) the Apple TV has MrMC, its own version of KODI with all the features you mention. Well worth it.

      • How does MrMc compare to infuse?

    • Can anyone comment on how this compares to Plex? It sounds good.

      • A more basic version of Kodi - good for streaming from a NAS

    • +1

I am literally unable to parse this comparison.

      • Yeah. Which is which? And which is more desirable?

      • Hahaha… the comparison was COMPLEX hacker who was a little round around the edges (Kodi) vs SIMPLE assassin who's easy on the eyes (Infuse).

When I was younger and had more time, I would be all over Kodi… but I don't have the patience anymore, I just want things to look beautiful and work… first time, all the time. So Infuse is more desirable for me!

    • +2

Infuse's Plex integration is trash but. Syncing is so slow if you have a big library.

    • What NAS drive you using? Im planning to get one. Cant seem to decide if im better of getting apple tv 4k or shield pro which has bulit in plex server capability. I own a macbook, iphone Apple watch, so im temped towards apple tv but damn shield pro has a sick design and sick remote.

      • +1

We're using a Synology Diskstation. We also have Macbooks, but use Android phones. We ummm'd and ahhh'd a long time about which to get; we also looked at the Shield Pro but we didn't need it to play anything special or the gaming aspect of it (we don't have a 4k tv or a cinema grade sound system). We just needed our media player to catalogue and play our library of MKV files smoothly. So we went with what we felt offered a smoother and easier experience day to day (for the whole family… including our 4 year old).

The ATV4K remote is gesture based and quite nice to use as well!

        • Thanks for the reply. If i am out of the house and i have plex on my tablet, would the content be accessible with something like your set up?

    • I agree Infuse is good. I would also suggest storing your media in Google Drive and skipping the NAS if you don’t already own one. Don’t have to stuff around with hard drives etc. There’s pros and cons of course, but pros winning in my situation. You can also get Kodi to display/play your media from Google Drive (with a bit of tweaking). I don’t know if MrMC has that cloud feature tho. I think not.

      • +1

That sounds really great, but unfortunately our son likes to watch the same movie 10 times before moving on to the next one. So having a local copy really helps!

    • Infuse is awesome. Watching full 70Mbps+ 4K HDR rips over AC Wi-Fi from my old HP Microserver homebrew NAS and it doesn’t skip a beat.

    • Infuse is awesome - thanks for recommending it! I installed the free version and it works perfectly.

    • would you know if infuse does 4k hdr passthrough or (even better) tone mapping?

    • That just looks like Plex or Kodi…

    • Infuse was the only way I could play my 4k HDR movie downloads from my laptop, because my laptop wasn't powerful enough to play those files, but streaming it to the apple tv via infuse was the way to go.

Be aware there MAY be a new Apple TV not too far away.

    From here - https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/apple-tv/

Signs of a new Apple TV with an A12 bionic chip were uncovered in the iOS 13.4 beta in January, suggesting Apple is working on a refreshed model that could debut sometime in 2020. Beyond an updated processor and a "T1125" codename, there's little else known about the new Apple TV that Apple has in the works, but rumors suggest it may feature 64 and 128GB storage options.

A listing for an "Apple TV Gen X" showed up in Target's inventory system, which suggests that a new Apple TV could potentially be coming soon. Target employees say placeholder listings usually show up just a few weeks ahead of a product launch.

The new Apple TV set-top box will come with a new Apple TV Remote, according to code found in iOS 14. Little is known about the Apple TV Remote, and it is not clear if it will include design changes or new features.

    • But also form the same link
"Apple is still on track to release the new Apple TV, and it could come before the end of 2020."

      Thats a long time.

      • +5

Tomorrow is "before the end of 2020." Could be a long time.

    • And I bet the new one won't even include digital TV. How long til Apple put the functionality they have in the product name in the actual product? SO misleading. It's still going to be Apple TV but missing the TV part.

  • Can someone tell me what the difference is between Apple TV 4K 32gb for $199 vs the Google Chromecast Ultra for $99 and what apps you can and can’t get on each device? I’m not up to date with things like this so any explanation would be greatly appreciated.

    • +13

Apple TV is a stand-alone device chrome cast requires your phone.

Apple TV is far superior in all aspects imo.

      • +2

I agree Apple TV is better but if you want value for $, you can't beat the Chromecast

      • Thanks Gary and Rhyzy, i mainly want it for kayosports and maybe one or two others and can’t really see myself spending 199 on something to use it mainly for that.

        • For Kayo, grab the Chromecast Ultra in that case or maybe even a Vodafone TV if you want a physical remote

          • @bdl: Kayo has to be sideloaded on vodafone TV and then it's a coin flip whether it will install or not.

            • @Jake D: Works fine for me for three VTVs, Kodi also runs the Kayo plugin on a VTV with no issue

    • +2

Chromecast better, you can cast from any device - phone, tablet, PC, etc. It plays much more nicely with everything out there. And if you have a Home Mini in the room you can just say "Hey Google play Tiger King" no hands needed, no remote needed. And both devices still come in under the Apple TV.

      • How do you pause/seek without a remote? Do you ask home mini to do it as well?

        • +1

Yep! Or app on my phone or the tablet I keep next to the couch. Multiple ways.

      • +1

Wow i didn’t know that about the home mini, thanks mate very handy piece of information.

    • +1

Apple TV makes watching Netflix/Stan/Disney+/Prime a delight. It displays the menu in a visually pleasing way. If you are using it just for Kayo sports then it's better to just get the chromecast. If you want it for everything then I would shell out the extra $ for this.

  • +2

    Good price, cheers OP.

Thinking about upgrading from AppleTV 3 but not really sure what I'd gain. I don't have a 4K telly, my fetch box covers the local catch up (iview, sbs etc) and for missing stuff like disney+ I've just been airplaying from phone/ipad, which works fine.

Using it as airplay2 source playing spotify to other speakers around the house is about all I can come up with. What other tricks do these new ones have that could help me justify the purchase??

    • +1

Wait for new model later this year. From what I can tell the current Apple TV 4K doesn't do anything more for you other than faster CPU but even then the A10 is laggy for real intensive gaming, New one has A12 which would be awesome for gaming.

      • +1

Apple TV4 has the App Store, which is a massive gain from Apple TV3.

    • My favourite things about upgrading from the 3 to 4k were siri remote and the actual 4k, choosing your own apps from the Apple TV store is handy too. So probably not really worth it unless you're upgrading your telly as well imo.

      • yeah the remote would be cool but it's not a big selling point for me. The kids will inevitably loose or break it like they did the last one.

        • It's also not robust like the previous ones as it has a glass front like an iPhone so you have to be extra careful. But it's also the same tiny size so that's assuming you don't lose it under the couch once a week like i do 😂

          • +1

@Chickenleg: I can't keep track of our Harmony 650 remote so got no chance with a little tacker. I found it outside on the trampoline last week FFS.

            • @watts: Used to lose my apple remote all the time till I got a bright blue silicon grip cover for it off eBay for a few bucks

    • I have an ATV on the upstairs Tv and a ATV 4K on the downstairs one. At this price I am seriously considering retiring the ATV3. The “newer” box, while familiar to an ATV3 owner, is a so much better experience in many ways.

I have one, It's not as useful as Apple makes it out to be. I regret jumping gun getting it 2 months ago instead of waiting for the new Shield Pro. I'm even invested in the Apple garden and the only thing I see useful is Apple Arcade where there's some compatible games (most are laggy). Otherwise it's lacking apps and AppleTV+ is a joke.

I RARELY use my Apple TV 4K and when I do it's just for a Plex and even then the Plex client on Apple TV is gimped like most Apple TV apps. Also i HATE the touch apple remote with a passion! It's always not as precise as a normal button. I seriously think Apple has forgotten the Apple TV and people just use it as a overpriced AirPlay device.

In the past I've also warned people off the Bose SleepBuds and look at it now (recalled)

    • +1

      1) Lacking in apps is 100% the app developers fault not Apple's. Very easy to develop Apple TV app if need be as shown in their developers conference and as seen through some developers.

      2) Should be using paid Infuse not Plex. Plex isn’t that great.

      3) I have three Apple TV 4K and barely if ever AirPlay anything ever. The only reason to is for apps that refuse for their own ends like Zoom (Wants devices with cameras/microphones to be used).

      4) No app is gimped on Apple TV 4K unless it’s a Google service or similar. YouTube was purposely gimped by Google for Apple TV outright a few years ago because it was embarrassing that it was their best experience but they wanted consistent cheapo UI from inbuilt smart TV and also Google doesn’t want to pay for h.265. YouTube it simply dire tier content anyway and no one with an Apple TV 4K would be booting up YouTube very often anyway - simply way too much content to choose from otherwise.

      5) You use your iPhone or Apple Watch to control the Apple TV. Either through the navigation centre or Remote app.

      • +3

1)It might be due to devs but Apple isn't enticing devs to the platform.

        2) I'm heavily invested in Plex since I've paid for the gold pass and not going to blow $70 just for a media player.

        3) Eh.. Ok…

        4) Too much content on Apple TV ??? HUHHHHHH

        5) Tried it. Feels crap on my iPhone XS Max, iPad Mini 5 and iPad Pro 11. A set top box should NOT be controlled using touch controls, it's too imprecise

      • +2

I'm an Apple dev, Apple sent me a free Apple TV back in the day to develop an app for it, I did one, no-one cared. No-one buys the apps on the Apple TV so devs don't develop for it. Main apps on the device are the streamer/video player apps which are excellent on the platform. Not worth developing ad supporting apps from developer point of view if no-one wants them.

        • I go out of my way to avoid ad supported apps and refuse to allow my kids to buy games with IAP.

Then again I am in the minority who is prepared to pay for a good app.

Understand it is very hard to get revenue fromATV, once they have that initial setup of apps I don’t think people keep looking for new ones. The culture wasn’t developed to do it. Maybe if Apple didn’t load so much bloatware in the ATV people would access the App Store more and look around a bit. The bloatware on ATV is the opposite of Apple’s usual approach.

    • I have a shield and an Apple TV. I'm sorry but Apple TV has always had the better apps. I'm and Android user btw.

    • Yep agree, I bought one and it DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TV.

It's named Apple TV but you want to watch digital TV on it? No chance! What a joke.

      • You can watch most channels with the Freeview app, some shows are blocked due to distribution rights but I've only rarely come across one i'm interested in.

        • But you can't watch actual TV. Like there's not even an antenna input for DVB-T!!

  • Set up your Apple TV as a home hub.

If you're running home automation stuff in an apple environment you can use your AppleTV as a homehub to allow you to interact with your devices while you're not at home. E.g. turn something on/off while on the way home.
