ALDI - Digital Inverter Generator 1000W $349 (22nd September)

60

Get ready for storm season/flood season

This special is on the 22nd September

I think this is a pretty good deal - considering it has a 1 year warranty and you actually pick it up at a physical shop (not send from eBay) Its also German brand so should be good!

Note according to the manual it is 70dBA noise level - however eco mode should cut that down lower :)

Here is the instruction manuals for it http://www.isc-gmbh.info/download/prod/36630362/4151253_1101…

why am i considering buying this

    • A lot of people seem to have natural disasters, power outs etc…

Seems like a great thing to have if any of that applies to you.

  • I actually think its pretty good for the price - will be able to run the fridge ( I have power meter from jaycar (http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=MS6115 ) and our big fridge only draws like 300 watts and 14 watts idle, but nevertheless it would easily power a computer and tv….the best bit is its inverter so should be pretty clean power… :)

I just think its going to come in handy for storm season and or natural disaster strikes!

The 300W that your fridge consumes when it is RUNNING is not really all that relevant when you are sizing a generator or inverter. You need to consider the STARTING current, since many motors draw a lot more when starting than when running.

This generator is only 900W continuous and 1000W max. That means that the fridge (by itself) needs to be under about 4 Amps peak, or there may be overload or starting problems.

Note - this is for general info only - your fridge might be just fine.

      • Spot on, depending on the load, the start up current can be up to 4x the operational current. As the fridge works by cycling on and off this may be of concern. If you have an AC clamp meter put it on the active of the mains cable and set it to record at max . This should give you an idea of the start up current. That said if I was still living in the bush I 'd be in the market for a generator.

just get the current rating from back of fridge and multiple by 240 for max power requirement. unless your fridge is massive then the inverter should be able to handle it with ease.

  • The Bismarck Herring seemed like a better deal in the catalogue :P

  • The "Digital Inverter" description is worry, I checked the manual but it does not say if the output is :
Pure Sine Wave: Good output for all device types
Modified Sine Wave: Fine for Electronics but not good for motors (eg you Fridge)
Square Wave: Bad for all (well fine for incandescent light bulbs!)

On the + side is that it is rated at 230v (which is our Std in Oz, NOT 240v) though it does not specify what the variance is and some of these devices can be way over spec.

    • True, but it does say "Technology to operate with sensitive equipment"

Considering generators can often kill sensitive equipment, it seems this means the output is digitally regulated and should be great, but who knows…

    • Common misconception that 240V is standard in Oz, it,s just more common. The Australian Standard advises 230V with a tolerance either way.Bottom line is that if you look on the back of most appliances they are rated 220V-240V so they will work happily. Its legal for utilities to provide power at 250V, this can significantly shorten the life of appliances/globes so its worth checking your voltage from time to time.

  • "Its also German brand so should be good"

    gold.

    • it might be German brand but "made in China"?

  • "Note according to the manual it is 70dBA noise level"
    but at what distance?
An interesting comment as the picture suggests 94dB, now thats pretty loud.

    Just wondering
    1. Anyone see the fuel price these days? would it be cheaper to run an extension cord to china instead?
    2. In a Disaster Should we have more to worry about then electricity? Beside it most likely knock out petrol station too?
    3. During a disaster how are we to find it in the back of the garage under all junks where it would normally be stash away?
    4. If your car still running, why not stick an inverter to the cigarette lighter instead?

      1. Very cheap considering how long it can power the generator.
      2. Having a fridge with proper food is very important, I would also like a computer as well… depends what you find essential in a disaster.
      3. its a natural disaster not an apocalypse.
      4. Inverter provides very little power and runs on a car battery which you will end up killing, completely useless unless its for your phone.

Sounds like its running a bit rough in the vid.

    • I was going to say exactly the same thing. Particularly if you compare it to say, a Honda generator…it does sound a bit dodgy.

  • I will definitely be buying one of these. Losing power for 3 weeks after yasi hit was not fun. At least we had no damage to our house but in 100% humidity with no fan and no cold food, not an enjoyable few weeks.
