  • let's see, free range eggs cost about $5/dozen these days. So for $138 you can buy 27.6 dozens (332) of eggs. Can anyone tell me if you keep two hens, how long will it take before you can get your money back? I guess what I'm asking is on average how many eggs can they lay in a day?

Depending on the breed, it's likely to can lay eggs for around 1 - 4 years at around 220-270 eggs per year. The numbers will drop every year, however, the size of the egg will increase.

Then you need to factor in their food (scratch mix or laying pellets, depends on what you want) and pet stores will generally sell a 20KG bag for 20-30 dollars. I feed my girls twice a day with scratch mix and a supplmentary mix of leftovers and fresh fruits / free vegetable scraps from local produce stores.

But on the bright side, they are walking fertilisers, they save you loads on pesticides, terrify the living hell out of termites and when they retire… well, you know what to do :=).

Time has run out for the Coop and it's been replaced by Toblerones.

Small typo Oztrez in your nutritional information. You have 10g serving size instead of 100g (unless theres 2200kjs in 10g of Toblerone? :)).

    • NOOOOOOOOO! :P Fixed thanks for that!

My university degree is in nutrition and I was shocked at the energy in these things. They don't waste space in there.

Psychiatrist: What's wrong with your brother?

Sister: He thinks he's a chicken.

Psychiatrist: How long has be been acting like a chicken?

Sister: Three years. We would have come in sooner, but we needed the eggs! Boom-tish!!

    • +1 for the effort bro..

This is currently off the website. We're now making sure that we can fulfill all eggsisting orders before making them available again. Have an awesome weekend OzB

  • You do not need to waste money on a chicken coop, simply use a small cage and pack as many as you can into it like the big boys.

Read that, much easier and cheaper to raise chickens that way.
