  • Just for everyone's information: I hate the mobile phone industry. There is nothing 'free' about this phone and a the word 'cap' (literally meaning 'maximum') is completely abused (the mobile phone industry seems to think it means 'minimum' and call costs being completely arbitrary some feel they are getting a bargain by signing up for a cap).

Luckily there is some law which tells you the 'total minimum cost'. Unfortunately it is in the fine print.

PS. The iphone is forcing three to drop their prices to lure people in to long term contracts! Muhwahwahwa poor three :P

    • I'm ignoring the politics.. I think mobile plans and contracts are fairly straight forward really..

I agree the iPhone is putting and will continue to put downward prices on phone contracts, especially for smartphones. I'm holding out with my current phone, now 2.5 years old (Oldest, still working, mobile I've ever owned by a long shot) to see what further deals can be scrounged..
They can do better than a "Free N95" on the $49 Cap I'm sure.. Optus just announced iPhone pricing of $7/month on a 24 month $49 Cap (or $12/month for the 167Gb).. Is the iPhone a $7/month phone than the N95?? Probably..

  • are you serious that the iPhone is on a $7 month $49 cap. What a rip off? The handset is only going to cost $199 USD. I really wnated to get an iPhone but if it is that expensive I will stay with my n95.

The handset costs $199 in the US.. but when have you heard of Australians paying parity with the US even after factoring currency valuations.
$7 on a $49 Cap is surprisingly cheap, that's what the N95 cost only recently, if not more!! and the iPhone is a new phone as opposed to the 18 month old N95.. you'll always pay a premium for the latest and greatest..
Anyone expecting a $AU200 iPhone was kidding themselves..

    • If you search around on Google, AT&T is preparing to release iPhone 8GB without contract for around $599 somewhere down the track, and iPhone 16GB for $699.

    • The iPhone in the US is $200-300 upfront, then $70 per month MINIMUM.

Australian get the phone with ZERO upfront payment, and FREE on a $79 plan. Meanwhile the minimum people in the US will pay for an iPhone, even if they pay $200 a month is still $200-300.

I'm quite pleased with the Australian pricing.

      • Except AT&T's data plan is "Unlimited" (whatever it means over there). $79/month plan has only 700MB! :)

I guess everyone is now waiting for Vodafone's plans :)

        • Our small population and large land mass as always going to mean large data bills compared to the US.

Personally I'm happy with what Optus is offering, when you consider that their current $9.95 mobile data cap includes a "massive" 5Mb of data (yeh, 5 megs!), its a huge leap forward.

  • "The handset is only going to cost $199 USD."

AHHH. Why does everyone keep saying this!!!! It's $199 ON A PLAN in the US!!!! It was hailed as being cheap as the original iPhone was several hundred dollars even on a plan!!!

NO ONE will be selling an iPhone outright for under $500!

    • hahaha the pricing in the mobile phone industry causes frustration :P
I still hear people proudly announcing how they get $150 of value from their $49 cap. (Newsflash; the $49 cap gives you precisely $49 of 'value').

  • this is one of the few that is best on the market today (better then iphone).

  • First of all N95 8GB is not 18mths old.

I got my N95 8GB on three new $29 cap with $5/mth installment for 24 mths (that is because I have been with three for 2 years, that's what the call centre guy said to me). Anyone has been with three for 2years or more can get the same deal like me.

The N85 8GB probably still costs around $675 or more in Australia.

Also not to mention Three got cheaper 30sec rate and flag fall fee than any other carier. The three cap plan also allows you to make international call of up to $100 (I don't think we have that features on any optus cap plans). Three also got cheaper international call rate than Optus. I always call my friend in Bali and Optus charges me twice what Three does.

    My total cost on this N85 8GB is ($29 + $5) x 24 = $816 - $675 (if i sell the phone) = $141

    $141 divided by 24mths = $5.875

With as little as $5.875/mth, I am getting $310 worth of calls ($150 + $160).

ps. I might be able to upgrade to a new phone at probably after 18 or 22mths down the track.
For me that sounds a great deal.

    • Personally I don't think replacing a memory card slot with an 8Gb memory chip in an otherwise 18 month old phone makes it a new model..

That being said, you otherwise seem to agree with me… there are better deals that can be had than this one. Given 3 don't have the iPhone (yet) I suspect there will be increasingly better deals coming from them after the iPhone launches.

  • I found quite interesting article from Gizmodo, although don't know if this is doable or not :)

Basically they say just get a contract with AT&T and then cancel it, which brings the total price cheaper than buying outright iphone …

    anyway here it is

    http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2008/07/dont_buy_an_unlocked_iphon…

have fun calculating the real cost …
