There's no way they'll ship these for that price, unfortunately. I'll eat a roll of toilet paper if they do!

I'm taking note of this. What's your TP of choice?

      • I think 4 ply double strength. Prefer purple colour so it's more tasty!? Don't forget not just the TP but also the cardboard roller in the middle as well.

      • Quilton King Size. Looks like I'm safe though!

    • Be prepared then…. When it does deliver you probably don't have enough TP to swallow…

It would make top news headline. "Professional swallow TP at times of shortage due to bargain scored by fellow professionals"

  • Except from an unknown third party seller "Tramu Computers" with a few BAD reviews and not eligible for Amazon Prime. That's a deal breaker.

I have an old NAS HP N40L. Which was used for file server, print server, media player, torrent etc. But recently found it unable to play MKV file so I switched to using my old laptop for this purpose. It's much faster and lower power consumption.

Now I am not what to use it for. I wonder what people use a NAS for? Nothing my old laptop can't do.

      backup, server, etc etc

Nothing my old laptop can't do.

Can you laptop hold 4 x 3.5" HDDs, up to 12TB each?

      • Can you laptop hold 4 x 3.5" HDDs, up to 12TB each?

Well, someone in another deal thread told me to cram it til it fits, so maybe?

    • +2

      you can use it for
      1. plex server
      2. torrent storage
      3. as a container
      4. as storage location for your VM
      5. as onsite back up with replication to amazon S3 (also i heard that GCP is now even cheaper than AWS so you can do this as well)
      6. as storage backup for your NVR security camera

Plus the benefit is that you can set it with RAID configuration so if one drive fail, you can replace it really easy (the drive is hotswappable)

    • found it unable to play MKV file

What you need is a low profile graphics card to slot in and connect to TV via HDMI. I use a HD5450 from many years ago and it's flawless for x264 and x265 content in VLC. Cheap upgrade but well worth it. Can also add a tv tuner in the second slot, but no one uses that anymore.

      • I have a HD6450 but still can't play the MKV file.

        • That's odd. My HD5450 does 1080p x264 MKVs flawlessly. Have you enabled GPU acceleration setting in VLC?

    Back in stock!

    • Heh. It aint being sold by Amazon Au.

      • It wasn't from Amazon Au as the beginning if requires shipping fee?

        • he meant, slim chance the non amazon au store will honor the price mistake, or give voucher compensation

          • @CyberMurning: Exactly. What people forget is Amazon is also a marketplace just like EBay.

    • Annddddd it's gone

      • +1

I got a cancellation from buying at the start too unfortunately, seems like they're just manually cancelling them quickly.

      • Ahh dang it,

Were you charged the full amount though or just that pre-auth $1?

  • +8

Did some research on the company and seems "Tramu" is just Umart as it is backward read of "U_M_A_R_T", higher chance to get the deal now

  • Damn, was finally ready to trade up from the old OzBargained HP Microserver N54L. I swear that old trooper is now appreciating in value. Looks like it will just have to keep on keeping on.

Seems like the right place to ask the question - im after a 4 bay NAS unit to use as a plex media server - Whats going to be best bang for my buck to transcode a 4K movie? (only the one trans-code at a time) These Synology DS918+'s seem to be pretty powerful and will most likely be more than what i need.

    • At $305, it is the best price you can get man.

      • +2

Yes but this is a price error and wont be honored. Im after something similar but lower specced and cheaper.

    • +1

short answer is that you'll need a Plexpass to enable hardware transcoding, and this a DS918+ is just about the minimum you'll need in order to transcode a 4K movie. See this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1MfYoJkiwSqCXg8cm5-Ac…

Ideally you don't want to transcode 4k content if you can help it.. most people tend to keep separate 4k libraries because of this.

      • YEah ideally i direct play all my 4k content, its more of a backup option if i needed it and i was using the 4k transcode as a bit of a benchmark on the power i am after.

Cheers for the info on the DS918+ though, answered my question.

  • I saw it was available and didn't muck around buying one. I hope it goes through. I'm currently using expenology on a hp ml 10 that was a great bargain on here a while back.

    • Me 2 was when I finally decided I'd buy removed, you snooze you lose

      • +1

        Cancelled, lost anyway lol.

  • Made a freenas server using hp ml110 which i bought for 150. Add 4 or more drives and expand as much as u want. Add any plugins u want, plex, torrent, pc backu0. Rclone a long list.

  • -2

Lol.. no nas .. no $20 voucher either.

  • This is well below wholesale cost, only a big / reputable retailer would honour these purchases.

These appear to be fulfilled by Tmaru, and not Amazon directly.

    • Tmaru as backward to Umart, I believe it is umart. It is the problem whether Umart will honour it.

      • Well backward is uramt lol u mean swapped t and u :)

        • Cancelled, but the store name is Tramu. Their refund phone number is the same as Umart's online store.

  • Usually sells for $520-$700

Where can you find it for $520?

    • You can't now. The cheapest it has been since the last Ebay deal (when it was $636), is $699 + postage from PC LAN.

No worries get a cheap pc instead with a motherboard that supports raid and has 4 spare sata outlets. That'll serve plex, and whatever.
You can also use that one for reading ozbargain.

    • any that as small as this synology?

      • +1

If you need something small this one's not bad and will do 6 drives:

        https://www.pccasegear.com/products/21683/fractal-design-nod…

        • that is USD right? and just the case… so are you sure we will end up with a complete nas cheaper than synology?
          edit. AUD actually.

          • @CyberMurning: That's up to you to look around. Tons of options available. I simply answered your size question with an example.

            • @trevor99: That's a lot bigger though. But it can support gpu..

        • Got this case for my unraid NAS running ryzen 1600af

Multiple vms + dockers + gpu passthrough.

Can add different sizes hdds to expand the array.

But if after performance or all in one hassle-free NAS solution with support. Synology is the way to go.

    • Uses way more power than this.

  • +3

Highly encourage people to look into building their own servers.

I followed the NAS Killer 4 guide on Serverbuilds.net and made a power house of a machine from spare parts I had kicking around, that out performs any NAS in the sub $1000 range. Obviously it's not for every one, there is a bit of DIY and it's not as simple as an out of the box Synology setup - but I'm extremely happy with what I've got.

I run Plex (direct stream and transcoding) for two house holds, torrents, PiHole, VPN and a few other goodies and I'm barely using any resources doing so.

      • That's the one.
The attached forum post is also very friendly and knowledgeable.

    • Which OS? FreeNAS or unraid or something else? :) curious…

      • I went with unRaid myself. Read up and study the differences between unraid, freenas etc because unraid doesn't function like a traditional RAID setup. For me though, it fit my needs perfectly. I wanted primarily a media server where data redundancy wasn't a huge deal for me. Any vital data I subscribe to the 3-2-1 data backup rule anyway.

But unraid has been great for me. Very easy to set up but there is a high level of customization if you are more comfortable getting your hands dirty. Community support is fantastic and a lot of great Youtube support content to go with it.

        • I haven't gone down unraid as of yet since my media-pc coming to 6 years now is doing ok, Intel 4th gen i7 4 cores so decent to run plex and other things under Windows… I have 2 x ssd, 2 x 4tb drive 1 x 8tb drive so unraid although would be more safe I'd lose the 8tb under parity…i also backup the media to an external 6tb drive with veeam and ive recovered using it so free veeam paid for itself lol… All pictures get uploaded to one drive as well.. So I'm with u on the backup depending on importance…

Next time I'll def go unraid with ssd as cache and same or similar size drives for the data… Curious are you using HW decode on unraid.. Did u go with docker version? How many streams at a time do you get and at what resolution…?

      • I run Windows Home Server 2011 on my HP Microserver and it's been flawless for nearly a decade solid.

        • Hehe Yeh used that before it was definitely nice… But as shadowfax has if you move on from ur current media server with unraid or even freenas you can build very powerful and feature full NAS'… Def worth a look 😊

  • Got cancelled mine.

  • Same here, mine got cancelled also!

  • Just got the cancellation email

  • Got my cancellation email :(

  • You can build a decent Mini itx PC with raid for almost similar price! Why use this?

    • +2

There's value to some people in having something that works out of the box with well supported software & apps and without constant endless tweaking and trying to get it to work properly. Particularly for commercial/small business applications.

If you're a home user and like to tinker, then by all means, build one. You won't save much but you'll definitely get more out of it in the long run.

      • OK. I probably may not need a NAS at all as I stopped stocking Linux distros. But if I ever decide to have one, I will probably end up building my own then.

      • Also, it's not like you can't tinker with Synology. It's linux anyway, especially if you want to setup automatic downloading of linux distros, etc. You need to be pretty tech savvy to do that.

        • yeah used to work before with couch potato something like that, setup tv show watchlist, it will auto download for new episode on the day it get released, rename, get subtitle, then move the file to my plex folder

          now broken (with torrent)

  • OMG can't believe I missed it!!

    • +2

don't worry you didn't miss much as they didn't honour it.

      • ahh bad luck….I was still reading the first page…

  • Just bought one 10 secs ago! we will see if they honour the order. Paid

    Item Subtotal: $305.00
    Postage & Packing: $12.56
    Order Total: $317.56

  • -1

Just bought one off Amazon AU for that price.

    • Not from seller Amazon.
This is a waste of time.
Who knows what the motives of this seller is. Relisted at the same price error but keeps canceling orders (I hope that includes refunds)
