LG V50 ThinQ 128GB (Telstra Variant) - $599 + Delivery (Free C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

4160

Found this in the catalog at https://catalogue.jbhifi.com.au/2020/04/16-apr-digi/index.ht…. Similar to the G8S deal from last week, but better screen, bigger battery and the DAC the V-series is famous for. Very good deal on a very good phone. Pretty sure its an all-time low price, maybe clearing stock for the V60 which has just been released.

I ordered just after noon on friday (17th), got shipping notification just before noon on monday (20th), and received it at my house 15 minutes ago. i went with the cheapest auspost shipping. in my order confirmation, it said i'd receive it around the 30th, so i got it much faster than that. i know they have got this contactless delivery thing going now, but it seems weird that they drop the phone on the front door step, dont even knock, and then walk away.

the phone is on the charger. coming from a 5.2 inch screen phone, i thought it'd be bigger - am happy that it isn't phablet sized.

Guys who if possible please go to Telstra forum like many of us. Pled and ask ask Telstra for Android 10

    https://crowdsupport.telstra.com.au/t5/Device-Updates/LG-v50…

    • Can't seem to access the page

    • I've been posting on there and I messaged LG directly. Here's the response I got:

"To set your expectation, we have no information yet as to when will the updates be available for LG Australia. Android updates on any phone comes directly from Google, LG has very little, to almost no control over when will an update will be release.

Android updates are directly coming from Google, which is the Operating System (OS) developer. Once they have the OS ready for the said model, it will be forwarded to LG for beta tests, once done, it'll be forwarded back to to Google for release approval, and only then it'll be released publicly (either over the air OTA or via network providers)."

Just a bit of a non-answer which makes it hard to determine where in the progress cycle the update is.

      • That answer is crap. its like not answering. As a customer i don't really care who owns that piece of work whether its Telstra/LG/Google. They need to work it out. It needs to be tested approved by Telstra and LG regardless.

This is top of the range Flagship phone. They need to do something about putting it on the same update as overseas carriers.

    • Sent an email inquiry to LG. Here's hoping that enough people do, something might get done.
      https://www.lg.com/au/support/email

      • Update: Same empty reply others have received:
"…We understand that you want to keep your device updated to the most current version of Android, however to set your expectation we have no information yet as to when will the updates be released.

Android updates on any phone comes directly from Google, LG has very little, to almost no control over when will an update will be release.

First time poster long time follower.

Just wanted to give a shout out to the JB Store Manager at Castle Hill Homehub NSW (name withheld).

I found perhaps the last V50 at JB in all of AUS during the sale. The item was in Kedron QLD. The Castle Hill Store Manager negotiated on my behalf even though the Store Manager on the other end wasn't so keen on it as it was an interstate transfer + required priority shipping with insurance i.e. costing them money while they could just sell their item to another customer as they had sold all of Kedron stock the previous day but got given two from a closed store to sell.

I got the brand new phone delivered today. The store manager made sure that he came out to give the phone to me.

Fantastic customer service. I have bought from them previously but will be repeat customer in future too.

      Excellent customer service!

      • Yes, especially after me getting disappointed due JB online order cancellation.
It was a great comeback from JB just because of this one employee!

  • Ordered one online Friday morning with expedited shipping. Just got a call back now telling me they don't have stock and i should cancel my order.
Anyone else in a similar same situation?

    • +1

I ordered my one on 16/4(first day when OZbargain posted).Paid 6.99 for the fastest shipping(estimate delivery on 20/4).I got an invoice but JB didn't send a shipping statement to me. 4 days later,I emailed to ask and they reply me the Chadston store will call me but they didn't. Today, I received an email said my order was cancelled due to no stock.Refund would take a few days. Very disappointed.

      • More or less the same for me, the order confirmation said estimated delivery on the 20th. I contacted head office on the 22nd and head office directed me to call the Prahan store who told me i had a choice of cancelling the order or waiting for new stock to come in.
So disappointed, I was exited for this phone, been using the g6 for over 3 years, this seemed like a natural upgrade.

  • This phone is fantastic. The display quality is excellent and battery life has been surprisingly better than some who have reported here. However, I thought I could manage without the dual Sim but it's definitely a deal breaker. This has led me to the conclusion that I have to return the device.

    • ? you can just return the opened device to JB because you don't like it? or because it's missing a feature i didn't know that.

      • Well that's first option. Its been mentioned previously that others have returned.

        • Only because jb were advertising it as dual sim in error initially.

  • even though deal is expired, anyone know how this phone's camera compares to other android or ios phones?

cant seem to find it on Dxomark which is very weird.

    • +1

Coz it's only a marginally better than v40 otherwise they both share the same tech underneath.

      • :o yea i can see that now when looking at gsm arena

I bought two phones recently. Huawei P10 plus and this V50 both from JB. Also have an iPhone x for WORK and old S8. I am also an amateur DSLR photographer - mainly landscapes. These are my observations:
      - Camera in reality is just 'okay'
      - Pics have a lot grain.
      - night photos are shot at low iso to reduce noise but at very low shutter speed. In comparison P10 plus take brighter and vibrant pics even at higher iso.
      - Telephoto lens rarely works. In normal to low light settings, normal camera kicks in instead of telephoto and crops the photo to 2x. This is because normal camera has f1.5 and Telephoto has f2.4 aperture. Disappointing really.
      - Wide angle is okay but has no auto focus. Thus sometimes subject is out of focus.
      - Front cameras have no autofocus and unfortunately produce blurry selfie photos as human subjects move. P10 plus and S8 have autofocus on front facing camera.

If I compare, this phone is still good camera for $599 but in reality I am gobsmacked with the $249 P10 plus on clearance at JB. Leica assisted lens are pure porn. Also takes lossless 2x zoom photos using both monochromatic and normal lenses.

V50 is good for manual controls. I rated iPhone x low due to lack of manual controls below.

      My personal camera phone rating:
      P10 plus > V50 > s8 > iPhone x

      • I find it super compared to my A70 in all aspects but the screen notch, tad big on v50

      • +1

Never seen the P10 Plus for $249 that seems good.

        • They had an online clearance sale. P9 (32gb/3gb ram) for $199 , and P10 plus (128gb/6gb ram) for $249 - which is what V50 has. Very good value imo but GPS connectivity is very bad on it.

I think they are clearing phones with big bezels. May not look attractive at the shop floor anymore.

Wish it was the blue colour with diamond etching but its just the normal black. Very similar to iphone 8 in hand. Just a bit bigger.

I bought P10plus from Albury store and negotiated to get it shipped to Sydney for additional shipping cost. Again, exceptional customer service from them too. I suppose it matters how you request it.

To get the best of V50 you need to use Manual mode. Also install Gcam. However we are stuck on Android 9 means we can only get an old version of the Gcam build….

Never liked Huawei just got the camera itself, not gonna pay a premium price.

This price for its camera is decent.

if you want the best you pay iPhone 11 Pro, Huawei P40 Pro, Galaxy S20 Ultra, Oneplus 8 Pro costing 3 times as much as this phone and yet none of them got dual screen feature.

All we need is Android 10 it will unlock latest widescreen mode + Gcam builds

The next best price point would be Xiaomi Mi9T with Gcam

Unless you only care about camera, the overall package IMO LG and Xiaomi is better than Huawei

        • I have never used any other brand except for Samsung, Apple, Sony and now LG and Huawei - both for the first time.

I agree with your comment but the poster specifically asked for camera review.

We have a little baby that is hyper and moves a lot. I do need a good camera (for a reasonable) price to capture those memories without pulling out my dslr or mirrorless all the times especially indoor night shots. Also helps that I can share photos quickly with family when using the phone. That is why good phone camera is important to me.

Just moved on from my Note FE/ S8 setup (changed the sim around based how I was feeling).

P10 plus was a surprise where I thought I was just buying a spare phone whereas V50 felt a little incomplete. However, I have done updates and P10 plus in Android Pie degrades the Camera Quality especially no stabilisation in Videos! Rolling it back to Oreo.

I presume Huawei is going to sit in the lounge room so we can use it as a night family camera for baby shots, remote (IR blaster) and to share files around while LG becomes my daily.

In terms of phone software, both do not come close to my Note FE. Should have bought a Note 10+! but then you get what you pay for.

  • Thanks OP!

I exchanged one LG G8S and ordered LG V50 last Saturday and picked up in store today.

I bought this, and it arrived on Monday. It is really good.

    • Does your dual screen remain blank when closed like mine?

It doesn't show the time, date or notifications when shut.

      • do you mean when the dual screen is facing backwards, or folded so its facing the main screen?

  • Just returned one still sealed at JbHifi Eastland VIC if anyone is still looking for one.

Got my phone delivered today. So glad i didn't cancel my order.

    • Why would you cancel?

      • +1

Last week JB told me they didn't have stock, and recommended I cancel my order as waiting for them to order more from a supplier could take a long time. I didnt cancel and 9 days later i got a email saying my phone is on its way.

        • So weird to ask you to cancel, you would think they would just do it on their end. Anyway worked out well for you I suppose!

  • -5

so I have managed to return my device. I was looking at the display last night and I noticed the display colour/brigthness is inconsistent across both the screens. Did any one else have this issue?

    • Didn't you return on 23/4 due to not Dual SIM? Didn't you say the display quality is excellent?

      • -2

It only got approved today for a return through online store. My comment about the display was in regards to main display and not the dual screen option one.

I was asking an honest question and some people got offended.

  • My selfie using the "Sexy Red" filter was unexpected. 😂

  • I wrote what i thought was a good review on JB Hifi but it got REJECTED by JB saying it doesn't meet content guidelines.

This was my review that was rejected below.
Is JB Hi Fi "filtering out" bad reviews or was there something that breach content guidelines ?

Review that was rejected by JB Hi Fi
Bargain for $599 in March 2020

Bought at late March 2020 for $599. Pro
    -Bargain at $599
-Snap Dragon 855 processor is fast
    -Dual screen attachment is cool
    -DAC and headphone jack

    Cons
    -No Dual Sim
-No infrared remote (but alot phones dont anymore)
-Andriod 9.0 and LG are slow at updates
    - If u picky, has notch and a fingerprint sensor at back

In summary, $599 gets you a 2019 flagship phone. Great value.

    • Maybe they have a problem with you mentioning the price, otherwise I'm not sure why they would remove it.

      • I think they generally don't like you to include the price in your review.

    • The product page has been gone, how did you write review?

      • JB sent me the link to write a review via email.

  • PSA: LG AU have just marked this device as "discontinued" on their website. Not entirely sure what this means but it doesn't bode well for Android 10 updates.

    • +1

The update has been released. Teltra are the ones not passing it along. They may be waiting on a "stable" version…

      https://www.mylgphones.com/lgs-android-10-update-plan-q2-202…

      • +1

In the link you shared: "The Android 10 OS Update target South Korea models only."

LG AU aren't offering much help either with their generic reply of "it's not up to us, it's up to Google".

        • Yes.The updates usually go to Korean models first, as do Samsung's.My point was that there is another update to 10 in the pipeline described as "stable", which may explain Telstra's reticence in authorising the version they would have been sent. It isn't L.G.dragging the chain, though their response does suggest a bit of a lack of insight on their end. Getting the full[ish] and proper use of the second screen would be a brilliant plus.

        • +1

Has ALWAYS been the way with LG. Hence why I can't be bothered any more even though their phones are excellent. Had a G3, G6, V30 and V40….

      • First of all, I want the update so badly as well.

The link initially says "The LG V50 ThinQ, LG V40 ThinQ, LG V35 ThinQ and LG G7 ThinQ will get the Android 10 Final stable release." but if you look at the box with the green bar on the left displayed below it says V50S not V50. Yeah, they are different models and v50s is newer that came out after v50

Android 10 update for the models listed in there except V50S was announced around Feb to be rolled out in Q2 so that link doesn't say anything new.

V50 stable has already been rolling out and it's just taking longer to receive it in Australia.

Let's just be patient guys lol…

  • Ive gone back to the v30 for the time being.

  • Is this likely to go on sale again soon?
What's the word on the street

    • Discontinued

If anyone is after a case to use when you don't want to run dual screen or carry a bulky dual-screen case, my one just arrived from aliexpress.
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32859541333.html?spm=a2g0s.9…
I personally like simple protective cases like this, and the phone is way too slippery without a case for my liking.
