LG V50 ThinQ 128GB (Telstra Variant) - $599 + Delivery (Free C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

4160

Found this in the catalog at https://catalogue.jbhifi.com.au/2020/04/16-apr-digi/index.ht…. Similar to the G8S deal from last week, but better screen, bigger battery and the DAC the V-series is famous for. Very good deal on a very good phone. Pretty sure its an all-time low price, maybe clearing stock for the V60 which has just been released.

Mod Note: Refer to the catalogue for pricing, as the site hasn't been updated yet. Site has been updated.

      • Thats pretty poor then. Oh well.

  • FYI - I doubt this will receive Android 10 at least not for a very long time, particularly as a branded 'Telstra' device.

    Otherwise neat price.

  • Thank OP purchased one for pickup, has anyone purchased this before and can confirm when picking it up there should be two boxes? one for the phone and the other for the dual screen case, or is it packaged together. Thank you

    • +1

Yes it comes with 2 boxed packed together in a paper enclosure, 1 for the phone and another for dual screen attachment.

      • Thank you

  • +1

So good. So tempted to jump from my LG G7+ esp with that dual screen bonus

  • +3

Got it, compared to the s9, the s9's UI feels way more polished. I liked how multi-tasking worked on the s9. On the LG it's stacked cards and I can't find a night mode.

The phone got noticeable warm to the touch with the battery depleting fast, I can tell the settings are lagging then it shut off despite having 37% battery. The 2nd screen makes the phone heavy and it's frustrating to use. On charge now let's hope it holds up better.

    • Thanks for the quick feedback
what do you mean by frustrating? is it similar feeling to using a flip case on a normal phone? or is it the weight of it?

      • +2

It does feel similar to a flip case only a bit heavier. When you open it, it feels unbalanced.

As for why it's frustrating, I didn't try it much because it doesn't seem well thought out, you can maximum youtube on one screen but on the other screen content stays vertical. So you have mismatched orientations.

        • Can you confirm if it is dual sim please ? Too many conflicting info in previous posts here.

          • @sistermay: I can only see 1 Nano sim slot in the tray, the other is for the SD card.

            • @Rauland: Not a combo SIM tray microsd card is it?

              • @xoom: Yes, would really like to know this as well. No dual sims is a deal breaker for me.

    • I recharged it fully, the phone/battery was probably sitting unused for nearly a year and needed a charge to recalibrate it. The phone seems to hold up with no heat or lag now.

  • +1

Lucky i suppressed my inner ozb for the last V40 deal. This is a cracker! Upgrading from V20 (nothing wrong with it apart from image ghosting from screen and getting a bit of lag). It will serve as a back up phone then. Thanks bud!

  • +2

I really wish something with these spec comes in 5.5 inch full screen phones. All these upsizing is too much.

In the meantime I'll stick to my Galaxy S10e (best compromise) while next to a power point.

    • +1

I agree, this is a great deal that I almost pulled the trigger on but the screen is just too big for me.

    • Does your S10e have battery issues….?
I thought it was just me.

I was tempted to get this as an upgrade from my failing quickly s10e

      • +1

I don't think it's a battery issue. It just doesn't last as long as the actual flagships as expected.

You have to get rid of widgets and it helps with the battery life.

Unfortunately it's the best sized phone for me so will have to wait it out till a better one comes along.

  • What is meant by "5G Compatible" ? is it a 5G device ? what are the supported bands ?

    • +1

      3500 N78

  • This for $570 or an s10+ for $794? I do prefer samsungs software, I do like having front fingerprint and the s10+ has a better dac. But dual screen?

How useful is the dual screen? Any good use cases for it? I use my phone mainly for music and directions driving, watching videos on pt and music when exercising.

    • dual screen is cool and somewhat uselful, but reviews said with dual screen you'll get 3.5hours usage. go figure.

      • But can't see it being practical having the second screen always being connected though.

        • It's detachable….
Like that song from the 90s :)

      • +1

My S10 non plus gets me about 3.5-4 hours anyway, if you don't use dual screen on the LG then I'd say go with that. The idle battery drain on the S10 exynos sucks compared to the Snapdragon model.

LG still do phone eh.. Wow.

  • This or the S20 🤔

    • +1

Ones double the price and by far a better phone.

Myself and my partner are in need of a new phone, so I got two of these for less than the price of a new flagship. Win win for me.

      • +2

Different colour cases to differentiate? 😂

    • Depending on your budget. I got this today and quite happy with all except battery

  • What security patch is this Telstra variant up to?

    • November 2019 with Android Pie.

      No Q yet.

      • Cheers, that's 2 months better than my Huawei Nova 2i, but not great overall. I'll pass on this and wait for something better.

    • Android 9
and 10 may not come anytime soon, or won't come at all. that's normal for lg.

      • +1

LG have already released 10 but Telstra haven't approved it :(.

        • yes LG have release 10 for US region or maybe other area of the world, not AUS, not for Telstra model, so still a NO.

  • +1

Placed an order. Can someone recommend a case?

    • Yeah I'd also love to know if there is a case out there that can be used with the dual-screen attachment on.

    • +1

Spigen range on eBay is good. I've got Tough Armor case for my V40, but they don't seem to make that specific model for V50.

Overall great case brand and ergonomically designed.

      • There's also Ringke but I don't know if the attachment is covered with the casing

  • wtf i just checked a comment said something about a dual screen, and on the site it says dual screen included, shittt shit shit i dont need another phone, this looks so cool
i got a iphone 11 as my main phone with lg v30 as backup

    • What do you use the backup for?

      • +1

he meant a spare, if main broken, otherwise just collecting dust

  • I bought the Mi 9T in the last JB deal after moving away from iOS…yet I'm still tempted to jump on this though after only having the 9T for a month.

But single SIM and slow updates is a major turn off for me at the moment.

    • +1

Yep the empty promises of updates is the reason i'd never entertain another LG phone.

    • good on you, by that time i do not need a new phone. but now i am, no more 9T for me to grab.

    • +1

Haha I'm in the same boat… the dual screen attachment actually looks kind of cool too.

I've used LG phones in the past (G4, G6) and have always liked their hardware. But the Mi 9T with the Pixel Experience rom is so buttery smooth (and not to mention has one of the higher screen to bezel ratios). Not sure I can go back to notches or to crappy outdated takes on Android.

      • +1

Stick on the Mi9T, LineageOS official is coming out over the next few days and is so much better than any vendor ROMs

      • Could you kindly point me in the right direction to try out the Pixel Experience rom? Am I able to restore MIUI if I need to?

  • +1

Criminal this is not on Android 10 yet. Doesn't appear to be any custom roms for it either? https://forum.xda-developers.com/v50-thinq/development - from what I'm reading there has been no luck in unlocking the bootloader yet, so are stuck with LG official roms.

  • If I got this phone it would be for the dual screen… but the G8X apparently has a much better dual screen, but not available in Au…

    • -1

G8X is different name of model V50S
It has better dual screen with more flexible folding angles ( similar with new dual screen of new V60)
But downside are the worse camera and smaller screen compare with V50

    • eh? there are 2 similar lg models? whats diff. between V and G ?

      • Normally v and g model have different design on previous years

        However last year LG released 3 model of G8 (G8, G8s, G8x) and 2 model of V50 (V50 , v50 s)

G8x and v50S are exactly same design and all features (size, processor, ram, memory, camera factors,…). Only different is v50S has dual screen and G8x doesn't.

        • V50 and G8x differ in cameras, 5G and how the dual display fits onto the device, V50 has pins, G8x slots into USB port.

      • mainly,

        1. V50 dual screen uses a different panel, so there's colour/temperature inaccuracies when looking at them together. G8X uses the identical panel, so they'll look cohesive.

        2. V50's hinge mechanism only "locks in" at 3 angles, while G8X can stay at any angle.

there are other differences as others pointed out but i don't really care about those.

  • anyone been able to get a gift card too with this if they sign up for a telstra mobile broad band data plan ? also is it best to buy with suncorp e card or a amex card that offers cracked screen protection?

    • My preference was to use Amex for the screen protection insurance, but the JB website doesn't take Amex, so I went the Suncorp giftcard (and immediately ordered a case as well).

      • Does Amex kick in if paid via PayPal?

        • +1

No, I'm pretty sure it applies only if you pay directly with Amex.

      • is the screen protection for the first few months only though ?

        • It's not explicitly clear - if you're paying for a SIM-only plan then the phone needs to be less than 3 years old, but from a quick read I can't find a specific cover period for an outright phone purchase, so it may be unlimited as long as your Amex account remains active - you can read the full T&Cs for the Explorer card here if you want to do your own research: https://web.aexp-static.com/content/dam/amex/au/staticassets…

  • -2

I can see it here for $450, brand new with free shipping?

    https://www.ritzpixbyritz.com/index.php?route=product/produc…

    • +5

It doesn't mention about dual screen including and also look like grey market (not Australia stock)

    • +5

Model is LMV450PM (Sprint US), 5G won't work in AUS as not the correct bands.

      • I believe that model isn't dual screen compatible, no pins on the back?

    • +4

USD? and that website is sketchy as bro

      • Super sketchy, look at all the spelling and grammar errors in the website… Cheap ripoff

  • +1

Good combo with the phone for Spotify, Netflix downloads etc.

    Samsung EVO Plus 128GB MicroSD - $25.95 + $3.95 Delivery @ ShoppingSquare

    • Do you know if I can move my SD card which has Spotify songs downloaded from existing phone to this one?

      • +1

Not too sure sorry. May work if you change the download location on the new phone to External and spotify sees the files automatically.

        • Thank You

      • +1

Yeah it should be able to re-index. Make sure you set the storage to SD card in Spotify. Although for me it worked 1/2 times.

        • Thank You.

  • does anyone know if the camera is good? and should i pick up this phone or s10 for $700? and hows the battery life on the v50

    • search this post about battery you will see some

      • s10 or this ?

        • Depends on what you really want tod O with phone
I like to do multitasking on my phone as watching (or listening to YouTube)and playgames or reading at the same time so LG v50 is my choice

          • @arrogant84: how good is the screen?

            • @ShotzzAU: Can't say because it depends on your reference.
Like some people like the vibrant colour on Samsung but some one hate it and prefer color on iPhone

V50 has full HD resolution so I think it's enough
You don't need more than that on small screen because I can't see the difference

              • @arrogant84: V50 is Qhd not full HD. Out of the box the Samsung is punchier with higher saturation. LG is more toned down. You can adjust the display settings with the LG to get a similar look. Its easy to adjust. There are various preset modes including a high saturation option or you can just manually adjust it. The quality of the panels are very similar. Edit: Only referring to the main screen.

          • @arrogant84: are the 2 screen has the same size and resolution etc etc exact same? otherwise weird

            • @CyberMurning: Sadly the 2nd screen has a bit smaller size and less resolution (if I don't remember wrong it is only HD)
It is quite weird but if you don't look it too much. It's quite hard to notice different between HD and full HD

  • Friggin typical, just got a Realme X2 Pro - sigh. Really wanted the V40 but didn't drop down to $499 again - now this at $599 - dammmmmmmm

    • What drop to $499?

      • gessus.. he said, really wanted v40 but been waiting and v40 never drop to 499, and now he see this 599, he reqretted bought realme already

  • Bought the V30 for $399 in Jan (well I paid nothing considering I was able to port in and get a gift card) and super happy with it, my G6 (crappy Au version) was seriously on its last legs. Having said that though I wish this was available at the time though totally would have dropped an extra $200 for the current version. Oh well maybe in 12 months I can do another port and it will be even cheaper lol.

  • Damn it's so hot! All the pick-up option in the city run out of stock. I just missed the option to pick-up so have to order it online and wait for a week.

    • Hi, is there an online option? I too missed it but couldn't find any delivery option.

  • +1

I so badly want to buy this, but have a LG G3 that received stuff all updates.
So sad. Looks like a fantastic deal.

What does “post paid” means when phone is outright?
