LG V50 ThinQ 128GB (Telstra Variant) - $599 + Delivery (Free C&C/In-Store) @ JB Hi-Fi

4160

Found this in the catalog at https://catalogue.jbhifi.com.au/2020/04/16-apr-digi/index.ht…. Similar to the G8S deal from last week, but better screen, bigger battery and the DAC the V-series is famous for. Very good deal on a very good phone. Pretty sure its an all-time low price, maybe clearing stock for the V60 which has just been released.

Mod Note: Refer to the catalogue for pricing, as the site hasn't been updated yet. Site has been updated.

Sure neg my post, but this is a $1200 flagship-level phone and people might expect it to have flagship level specs (ie 8-12GB RAM). Most reviews of this phone are of the 8GB model, I'm just pointing out that this is a variant with less RAM.

      • agree and others have much better battery life with all the features turned on. this, with the main feature dual screen, 3.5 hours.. bohooo

      • +3

It's last year's flagship, so 6gb ram is acceptable for the price.

The price matches its performance and is great value for the price.

Typed this on the lg v50 I bought today.
I chose this phone when I could easily afford any phone but as an ozbargainer i decided on this as it's a great deal.

  • What is "telstra variant"? Is it locked to Telstra?

    • oh I see that it's unlocked. What does Telstra variant mean though?

      • +3

It'll have Telstra software built in and maybe a Telstra boot up screen.

        • +1

I'm guessing i could get rid of that shit with some tinkering?

  • Hi guys, Is V50 better than LG G8s?

Bought LG G8S last week, waiting on delivery. could I still return it to JB? Seems like this phone has really good reviews.

    Thanks

  • I'm still pissed we don't have the G8 here, but instead the watered down G8s. I'm pretty sure the G8 is better than V50. It has the feature where the whole screen is a speaker membrane, meaning it's incredibly loud, making some bluetooth speakers redundant.

    • +1

      G8 has
      Smaller screen
      No 5G
      Less cameras

V50 on paper beats out the G8

I've got the G8s, weirdly this lower model has more cameras than the standard G8.

Then there's the G8x a missmass of everything, way to go LG, "Life's Confusing"

Is this carrier unlocked or Telstra only?

Not sure if you root this phone
LG is famous for slow updates

    • It is carrier unlocked, but I believe the updates will depend on Telstra and well as you said, combined with LG's bad history with updates it will take a very long time to receive updates.

    • As per the link on JB HiFi website:

Telstra variant only. Device is unlocked, and works on all Australian networks

  • Are the 2nd screens worth anything to onsell and reduce the overall price a bit further?

    • Not sure about durability of the 2nd screen case because it seems to be glass on the outside. Might be able to onsell to people who have damaged theirs, but if they've already been burned by the poor design maybe not

  • Using huawei mate 10 pro. Great solid phone, nothing wrong yet. And this LG V50 price very tempting but the spec not very much. Better Cpu, bigger screen but the same ram. Plan to use next phone at least the next 2 year. Should I change age it?

    • +1

Same boat. Havent got security updates since last year which is why I'm tempted.

  • Does this have hybrid dual sim slot?

    • +3

I'll tell you tonight after the phone arrives.

      • I'm also interested - the ad does say that it has dual sim.

  • +3

I bring up OzBargain hoping to find a good deal on a flashship from last year and bang! LGv50 on the homepage at the top. Purchased after checking camera reviews for low light checked out. Other ticks for me: Audio jack, screen brightness, price, water and dust resistance. Thanks OP!

    https://www.pcworld.idg.com.au/review/lg_electronics_austral…

Review says battery lasts only 3.5 hours with both screens on.

Also the dual screen cannot be used as combined for reading ebooks.

Controller mode for games have very limited support

    Buyer be aware

    • +1

For $600 without the second screen alone it is an amazing deal. I would totally agree with you if it were even $200 more expensive.

      • +2

Yeah it depends how you value it.

It's a single Sim device btw

If I buy it I might only use it for audio and as a backup not my primary driver

        • came to find this out, if it's single sim it's a no go for me. I like the phone otherwise

    • Ok the battery part, terrible. Pass.

      • this phone has good battery life.

    • Those comments maybe out if date, I've seen threads mentioning software to make apps work across both screens (left to right screen) and even a hack to force it to work in top to bottom orientation.
It's LG where good ideas go to die, however there's hope on XDA Dev of porting over Microsoft ROMS from the Duo series where the dual screen implementation looks great in early leaks.

      • +1

I haven't seen root or Roms available. Pls point out the threads you mentioned about better dual screen software support

      • yes i want to know as well

  • Micro SD?

    Wireless charging?

Also worth noting this is running android 9, Telstra has no comments when 10 will release

    • +2

True. LG are notably terrible at software updates themselves let alone waiting for Telstra as well as LG to roll out software updates. Good luck.

      • Yep. Tested V50 and update was still from May 2019.
My V40 global version got updated this Jan.

        • This jumped to October 19 on starting.

          • @terrys: Corona lockdown stage 4 date…

    • Can't you just download the OS and install it on there yourself?

  • I must say I am very tempted by this but I just did a comparison on GSMarena with my S9+ and TBH not much difference there in terms of specs.

    • How S9+ which has SD 845 v/s this one has SD 855. So should be compared to S10 series.

    • +2

Yeah unless you're a real techy who wants the DAC and best manual camera controls on mobile and the dual screen… outside of those LG traits probably not worth an upgrade from S8 or S9

  • I really like the lack of camera bump and it has 3.5mm headphone jack and knock to wake.

I was thinking the new iPhone SE is a good deal for most people but this deal is great bang for buck.

  • +1

    very tempted - using a pixel 2XL for over 2 years now….

    • +1

Yeah I've got a pixel 2, but the battery life is (profanity) killing me now.

      • +1

If battery life is bad on the pixel 2, this has 3-4 hrs of SOT battery.

    • -1

      2 years is nothing…

    • Using 2xl, battery capacity is 82% left. But I won't buy this lg. Slow or maybe no future updates. Battery is average without second screen.

    • should we jump in the wagon and upgrade? very tempting, but that means gettin rid of Google's excellent camera and photo upload

      • i totally forgot about the photo uploads… so if we switch to LG, we get a lesser quality photo upload?

        • +1

yeah we wont retain original quality, hoping they put it back on pixel 5

  • With the new oneplus 8 being so expensive and Oneplus 7t pro being 1k I'm not sure if this phone is a bargain for what it's worth… Its hard to judge overall experience is different

  • +1

Yeah software updates from LG are very very slow. Expect to be at the very least waiting 12 months or more if they come at all.

    • Qft the v20 is yet to see Pie outside of Lineage OS roms and in beta for the korea v20.

      • Makes me wonder if there's a lineage rom for V50

        • It looks like there is an official unlocked bootloader from LG provided the variant is based off the same Euro model. There is no TWRP, root or custom rom yet though on any model, though there is a bounty for it. Fingers crossed its similar to the V20 where a dev claimed the bounty and got root access working)

      • And I should add buggy Korean beta too. For Some reason the edit dropped off.

this doesn't look promising - no response from Telstra

  • Is this the cheapest SD855 phone on the market?

    • No, pixel 4 from Vodafone is at approx $520

    • Would be close… even if the pizel 4 is cheaper this trounces the pixel 4 for features unless software is your top priority where LG especially behind a telstra brand is worse than awful

      • +1

Good find, but pretty sure it's error, blue x2 pro listed higher price, and x2 pro never has green version, this picture is for X2 (not pro), don't know if they will honor it.

  • +3

Thanks OP. I've gone from V20 to V30, and only a few months ago to the V40. I'm definitely taking this opportunity to upgrade to the V50. Even if I ditch the second screen, I'm looking at a bigger battery than my V40, and 5G if I want to go down that path.

    • How are the updates on the V40. Did you get any and how often?

      • Haha. Having had V series phones back to back, that's probably one of the reasons that I keep upgrading - LG is RUBBISH at updating their phones. I don't remember Samsung being heaps better, but I'm definitely not impressed by LG's updates.

  • Is it confirmed to be dual sim or not?

    • Two nano sims as noted in the jb specs

      • Conflicting information. People on previous page are saying single

        • PCWorld review says single. I don't think JB one is correct. its single sim with Micro SD Card slot

          • @neonlight: Yep, single SIM only

            • @terrys: The only brand that I know can do Dual SIM + Micro SD is the Motorola series since G4 plus they had it

  • +6

No office works price match guys as OW don't stock this phone, saved you all a call lol

  • +1

    Shoe circle phones

  • +12

It's got touchscreen, GPS and WiFi. The marketing people really know their stuff…

  • I can see great potential in this phone.
Tbh I'd only be buying it for the second screen and 5G support but if the phone's second screen isn't good and makes battery life suffer I can't see much point in upgrading to this, as I've already got a worthy single screen phone.

Entertainment Book and Suncorp App offer 5% discount on JB gift cards. Suncorp purchase was instant - not sure on Entertainment Book.

    Thanks OP.

    • Wow. I really need to remember that Suncorp offers this! Thanks for the reminder.

    • There's normally a card surcharge with the entbook too

    • Just remember with some of these type of deals, JB Hifi can run out of stock and cancel your order. And then they will refund you back to a gift card and then you are stuck with it.

    • Yes but by the time you get those you might miss out the deal
