    You never know when you might need a particular knot.

    For example, I once used bowline knots to tie swing ropes to a piece of no-longer-used city infrastructure, so that I could put up a swing as performance art one day a few years ago.

    Spent the morning swinging, drinking tea. A couple hours into it, the coppers came by and said, oops, you're swinging over that driveway, can't do it, gotta take that down. (Note: They didn't object to the swing on the infrastructure, just that where I'd put it resulted in partially blocking a driveway!) Before I put it up I figured I'd eventually be asked to take it down, and I was happy I got 2 hours of fun time in, so I shrugged and said OK.

    They asked if I needed any help. I smiled and said no, give me a minute. I undid the bowlines and pulled on the rope, and the ropes went up and over the infrastructure and fell down on the footpath between the coppers and myself. Didn't take 30 seconds. I laughed, "It'd have been poor form if I'd put up some temporary street art without knowing exactly how I was going to get it down."
