Has $99 connection fee and you get $125 worth of flybuys points so basically you only earn $26 plus there is a contract.

There are other RSPs like Superloop, Aussie Broadband that do not charge connection fee, no contract and their prices are relatively cheaper with more typical (7pm-11pm) download speeds. E.g. superloop has 100/20 plan for $90, modem is not included though.

And these RSPs usually have discounts for the first 6 months when you signup.

    • You make a valid point.

What modem do you suggest we buy that can work with any RSP that doesnt need to be configured by me every time as I have no idea?

      My connection is FTTC.

      • NBN give you the FTTC network connection device. You need a router and not a VDSL2 modem.

How much do you want to spend?

        • I want a decent one for under $200. That will reach the whole house as the router will be in a study and it needs to have a strong signal.

          • @polar: There's not much under $200. TP-Link Deco M5 Mesh Whole Home WiFi Router. Comes in packs of 1, 2 or 3.

            • @Twix: Oh ok. How about under $300.00. Sorry I have no idea about this stuff. So grately appreciate your suggestions.

              • @polar: How big is your property?

                • @Twix: Not very big. Single storey 3 bedroom average house.

                  • @polar: Deco M5 2 pack should suffice. An alternative router under $300 with strong signal is the AmpliFi HD WiFi Router by Ubiquiti Labs.

                    • +1

@Twix: Thanks will look into them both.

      • If you have nbn FTTC, you don't need a modem router. You just need a router.

Which one to choose really depends on you, factors like how big is your home, how many users, how much you are willing to spend behind a router.

You won't have to configure it even once I believe, it should just be plug and play out of the box, just connect it to modem given by nbn and you should be up and running unless you want to change wifi password or wifi access point name.

you can try getting this: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/d-link-ac1…

but totally depends on how much you want to spend and what are your needs.

        • Any router you buy from a shop needs to be configured at least once. The exception being ISP routers.

          • @Twix: what would you need to configure on a router that a customer buys externally?

As far as I know there wouldn't be any need to do that unless you want to configure advanced settings or change wifi settings, because the router would already have factory defaults.

            • @bhakharvadi: When you first setup the router it will ask what settings your ISP use. Choose from PPPoE (username & password), automatic or static IP.

              • @Twix: If you choose automatic it should work straight off shouldnt it?

                • @polar: Yeah automatic is what Optus use.

                  • +1

@Twix: If I buy a modem I wont be getting this deal. Thanks for your help.

                    • @polar: A good router with a strong signal is worth it. I wouldn't go on a 24 month contract. Plenty of ISPs do month to month.

              • @Twix: I believe PPPoE settings are for the part when you have a modem router which is basically adsl, so you need login details to verify your account with ISP.

In a standalone router, the router will just take ip address/lease given by the modem (NTD) provided by nbn when you connect to it via ethernet cable. that is what I understand.

                • @bhakharvadi: WAN settings are up to the ISP. PPPoE is even used on FTTP, FTTC and HFC with certain ISPs.

Yeah if your ISP uses automatic IP the router will get your IP address but you need to select automatic in the router settings. If you don't tell the router the right ISP settings you won't be allocated an IP address and you will get an error message saying no internet or your ISP DHCP does not function.

  • I wonder if you can waive the connection fee if you don’t require a modem?

    • I don't think so, modems are usually costlier than $99.

  • Interesting.

This claims 40mbps peak speeds, whilst the $75 plan claims 44.

  • Can anyone recommend an affordable reliable NBN retail provider, I was initially with TPG and was always getting drop outs, so I went over to Telstra who have 4G mobile back up so if you have any drop outs the 4G instantly kicks in so you never loose a connection which was awesome, I had a 24 mth contract with them which expired a couple of mths ago so I decided to change to Aussie Broadband being $79 p/m as I was paying $99 with Telstra and ever since being connected to Aussie Broadband I have been getting drop outs once again, i.e will last anywhere from 30 secs to maybe 2 mins or so and this happens a handfull of times during the day. I would suggest I always have been getting drop outs with Telstra but with the 4G back up I had not noticed this during that 24 mth contract period I was with them, this Optus seems like an OK deal, spaced over 24 mths will equate to $68.92 incorporating the $125 flybuys deal into it as opposed to the current $79 I'm paying with Aussie Broadband. I'm on a 50/20 connection. I'm unable to get onto a higher plan as I have a FTTN connection and that's the highest available connection I can get at our premises.

    • Are you not using the Telstra smart modem with Aussie Broadband?

Have you told Aussie Broadband about the dropouts?

NBN has to fix it unless it's an internal wiring fault.

      Vodafone provide 4G fail over.

      • No, I didn't think the Telstra modem would work with Aussie Broadband, I thought they were configured only to be used with each service provider, I'm just using the modem Aussie supplied. I'll give that a try, but with the drop outs, I went through all this with TPG when I was with them, did all the over the phone tests, they sent an NBN technician out twice, but as the drop outs only happen random times each day, while they were here it never dropped out and they couldn't find any faults.

        • Use the Telstra smart modem it works well on FTTN with Aussie. Not all ISP modems are locked to the ISP that it came from.

          Yeah intermittent dropouts are tricky.

          • @Twix: @Twix I have a netgeaer gateway max c6300bd-1tlaus that was used with Cable. I have put it on the NBN connection but it only allow one device on at a time on aussie nbn fttc. Do yo know how we can fix?

            • @polar: Reset the router by sticking a pin or paperclip in the hole above the WAN port.

              • @Twix: @Twix we tried that but still same problem.
