  • What's everyone's thoughts on these? Looking to get one as a laptop replacement and wondering if I should go for the 8gb or 16gb ram?

I replaced my Dell work laptop with Surface Pro and couldn't be more happier. It's very light to carry so makes it much easier to carry during daily commute (oh well, who knows when will I start commuting again). At work I have a monitor so I attach it to that and it's then easy enough on the eyes. It can also be used as a tablet. After using this, don't think I will ever go back to the traditional laptops.

On the RAM, the higher the better and it will future proof you for a few years but if you need it just for casual browsing, netflix and basic work using excel, word etc. then you could perhaps manage with 8GB.

I'm not normally a RAM enthusiast (eg someone who advocates a lot of RAM just cos) but after using a Surface device with 16GB for a while and then going back to one with 8GB I felt it was noticeable. I think its well worth getting the 16Gb these days, long and short of it is you can manage with 8GB but better experience with 16GB imo.

      • cheers guys appreciate the feedback!

Good if you plan on using the tablet or pen functionality. Otherwise I would get a ultrabook laptop like the new Dell XPS or ThinkPad Carbon for a better typing and lap experience. The type cover is good but not as rigid as a proper laptop. I had a Surface Pro 4 and much prefer the laptop experience of the Surface Book instead (although the weight is annoying). Saying that I have only had terrible experiences with Dell laptops so I would be cautious. The Surface pro would probably have better support, drivers and quality control

Don't get anything less than 8GB ram and aim for 16GB.

If you do get a Surface you can get the cheaper 256GB model and buy a 512GB microSd card for about $100. You can then mount it as proper NTFS drive so it looks like a local disk. Then keep your files on the SD card and system files on the SSD. I sync the SD card with OneDrive so always have a backup. Not as fast as proper SSD but it is not bad and to go from 256GB to 512GB ssd is about $500+ for the surface pro which is apple-like rip off

      • This over the iPad pro?

        • +2

Depends what you need it for. If it is just internet browsing and some casual photo editing then the ipad has a better screen battery life, is better operated by touch. However it is pretty dumbed down OS so for ANY work that involved typing/Office or where you want to manage and organise your files easily the Surface is way better.
I do have an Ipad Pro 11 also but only use it for Lightrooom cloud synced photo editing and reading. Using it for any work is a pain in the arse, especially moving files around - it essentially has the same limited file system and limited interface as an Iphone. e.g. Want to connect a windows formatted hard drive? it wont show up at all. Also the standard folio cover for the ipad is crap, expensive and has no trackpad. The new one with the trackpad costs $500! is almost as heavy as the ipad itself. The surface is way nicer for doing any typing or work on and has a better keyboard cover and is more stable with the kickstand

          • @qvinto: Hmmmm ok might just wait in hopes it goes down in price even further. $2000 seems a bit much at the moment!

@minno15: Maybe look at the previous Surface Pro 6 model as it will be cheaper and the performance will not be much different. Functionally they are almost identical except for a USB-C port on the SP7 which the SP6 does not have. This is not a big deal anyway

  • does anyone have idea when Ms will release Book 3?

    • +1

Rumored to be later this year based off Windows Central and others are reporting.

Sales will be had on the Surface Book 2 variations as well most likely as it gets closer

Should be pretty soon based on rumours. Announcement within a month but who knows when it will be available in AUS. We had to wait a while to get the SB2 after it was released in the US
