            Lazy assholes everywhere

        • That doesn’t change the fact that Australia does have a GST that Apple must pay. We also mandate a 2 year ACL warranted rather than the standard 1 year offered in America. Considering all of this it’s surprising Apple priced this phone as low as they did

      • 438.90 USD to AUD = 687.975 Australian Dollars

A friend asked me if it would be considered an “upgrade” if they are on an iPhone X now and want to buy this SE…I just shook my head.

    • Kinda in the same boat, wondering. Have an X and not sure whether this is worth the purchase - specs for bucks seems to be amazing, but unsure of battery life :/

@onlinepred: No they are stupid because

                1. Some of them have to have to ask whether the SE 2020 (aka iphone 8 rebadge with updated soc) is an upgrade to the iphone X.
                2. Some of them don't realise this is a stupid question to begin with and seem to think it's a Android vs Apple issue.
                • +2

@arkie0: Given one asked the guy seriously who mocked someone for asking it…. Yes, that was stupid :)

        • +8

It's not as clear cut. iPhone X has the same CPU as iPhone 8. They wide angle lens is the same between the two.

iPhone SE doesn't just have the CPU+GPU upgrade. It has improved 4G/LTE support and 802.11ax Wi‑Fi 6 support. Also, the improved CPU does have better image processing capability so even with the same wide angle lens, SE is likely to produce slightly better images. Obviously, the telephoto lens in X isn't available in SE.

iPhone SE isn't a suitable upgrade for iPhone X (not to Apple anyway), as the display is a downgrade (and there is no 120Hz touch sensitivity, no face ID). Lowering the CPU clock on SE also means XS owners won't be too upset, but leave enough appetite for them to consider iPhone 12.

Apple main objectives for iPhone SE (2020) are: (1) entice previous SE owners to upgrade - because they are now on the final iOS upgrade - no more iOS upgrade for them later this year. Keep these people in the Apple ecosystem. (2) try to gain market share from people interested in Pixel 3a, Pixel 4a. Essentially, lock as many people into Apple ecosystem.

We, Android supporters can tease Apple all we want, but honestly, deep down, we would really like Qualcomm and Android makers do something similar. Qualcomm - stop wasting time on crippling midrange CPUs and spend more time on flagship CPUs. It's annoying to figure out a midrange Qualcomm CPU's performance with respect to previous gen flagship equivalent. Also, what's the point anyway? Android CPUs are lagging behind (close to 2 gens behind A series for at least 3 years now).

          • @netsurfer: Thanks for pointing this out.

          • @netsurfer: I get the internal differences and benefits of each, but a iphone user will get more outta a bigger screen and extra lenses then they will out of other differences imo.

Hence the SE being more a downgrade. If the pricing isn't enough indication either….

It's a smart product by Apple. Just made harder to swallow in Australia with the currency being so terrible.

          • +1

@netsurfer: Hmm, I'm not so sure that IOS 13 will be the last upgrade for the 2016 SE. Here's why - the 5s (and the original iPad Air) got 6 years of updates, and was cut off from IOS 13 only because it only had 1GB of RAM, and Apple wanted to introduce features and functionality that required 2GB. This is why the iPhone 6 only got 5 years of updates, because it also only had 1GB of RAM.

The 2016 SE (and the 6S with which it shares its internals with) has 2GB of RAM. Guess what also has 2GB of RAM? The iPhone 8, released in 2017. There's no way Apple are going to raise the minimum RAM to run IOS 14 to 3GB with the iPhone 8 released so recently.

Also, the 5th Gen iPad shares the A9 chip and 2GB of RAM with the 2016 SE and iPhone 6S, and it was released in 2017. I doubt they're gonna cut off any device released in 2017, so I have high hopes for any device that shares that architecture will receive IOS 14.

          • @netsurfer: Thanks! This clarifies a lot for me.

      • I would never go back from my X (OLED) to LCD screen again

      • +1

        Specs for bucks amazing?
I see a good processor on an otherwise horribly ugly and featureless phone.

The iPhone 8 it visually replicates is an actual upgrade to this, with a still great cpu and you.

How much are they going for?

        • Without looking it up, what spec processor is it? What makes it good?

          • @Herbse: iPhone 8 has the a12, same as the iPhone X. It's still extremely capable by today's standards, probably still better than the Snapdragon 855.

Otherwise, this SE model lacks many of the features found on the flagships, which the 8 was, while looking the same as the 8.

Keep in mind that the Apple processors, while fantastic, are almost completely wasted due to apples legacy support limiting any use for the power.

    • This will be a good phone, but certainly not a worthwhile upgrade from an X.

My wife has had an X since launch day, and I can’t see her replacing it any time soon. Still a great phone.

    • Tell them yes, and you'll buy them an SE if they give you the X for free :)

  • +10

The bezels are so 2015, but even the iPhone 6 had room for a headphone jack.

    • +1

Headphone jack would somehow require a wireless to 3.5mm dongle to function.

  • -1

It's 399$ in US converts to 625$ aud. Is government charging us the difference??? Or apple thinks we are too rich??

  • Wouldn't Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite 8GB/128GB Dual Sim (cheapest $730, comes with S-pen + extra features) or S10 lite be more contemporary & better value?

    • +9

Not really the same product. This is for people who want to be in the Apple ecosystem.

If you are indeed indifferent about Android or Apple, then yes there is a conversation to be had.

Apple has its advantages and disadvantages. You are going to get longer software support with this than any android phone (unless either Apple or one of the android manufacturers change their policy). This has a faster chip (if that matters to you), but worse hardware in most other areas (screen, camera hardware, less ram, design etc). If you like to tinker with your tech, Apple is not for you. If you want the bells and whistles, not the right phone. On the other hand, Apple has more apps in their app store because app makers only need to make sure their app works on 1 version of iOS so it's more attractive to them.

This is the best value, no frills smart phone which will deliver 80% of the flagship iPhone experience for 50% of the price.

      • -4

The only advantage, 'faster chip' cannot be utilised with reduced functionality. Note10 Lite is fast enough to not notice the difference.
The major difference is that Note is productivity device with 2x functionality (unless one insists on Apple).
The major advantage of Android is scaleability & flexibility. Can move to any brand & add features as DEX (desktop/windows style with monitor/kb/mouse) or move to Chromebook. Apps are still updated after the OS update warranty - the device will still function well.

      • +2

I agree with you on everything except 1 fact.

The Google play store has more apps, whilst the quality of the apps is a total different question.

iOS is so simple and easy to use in comparison to the many different flavours of Android and that's why most people like it, backups and restoring are easier if you've got an issue you (under normal conditions) have the Apple store and their technical support is amazing over the phone as well. Software support is good as well, typically outliving most Android devices (the Shield TV has done well, as an example) by usually double to triple the amount of time.

The benefit to Android is there's a lot more competition, it's more open and you have a choice of the features you want. Expandable memory on most devices is a big bonus too.

I own an iPhone 11 and an S10 and whilst I agree that the S10 should be compared to the iPhone 11 Pro, I still personally prefer the S10. Mainly because it works better for me and I've been on Android since 2009.

I guess the other issue with Android is that people buy a $200 Android budget phone (although less of an issue nowadays) and compare it to a $800 iPhone..

        • +1

I suppose I should qualify that. Apple will have more apps that you actually want to install. They are also all optimised to run on all currently supported Apple devices, which is always a risk with a non-flagship Android devices.

I don't like the Apple user experience personally, but if I were ever to move to Apple it would be for the App store.

          • @Fiximol: For me to fully move it'd be for iMessage and Facetime and the ease of backups but yes I agree.

    • Does it come in a sub 5.5" frame?

      • Note 10 Lite is 2x the screen area (2.6x pixels) in slightly large frame (h+2.5, w+0.9cm). If you want smaller frame, go for S10e (S20 would be expensive). Everything else is superior in Note 10 Lite

        • That's a negative for the note 10 lite, it's not like people going for the Se want a HUGE phone lol. I have s10e, and it's battery barely lasts a day, and only has 10 months of OS updates left.

    • +1

You wanna start something?… well do ya… punk!

  • +1

Sigh, I'm still yearning for the old days of the 4-inch screen & smaller form factor. At least while my eyes can still see things that small.

    • Get a used SE, swap the battery for a fresh one. It’ll last forever.

      • Apple might stop supporting it soon. Rumours around that the old SE won’t receive the next big iOS update (iOS 14).

      • More and more sites and even apps are not compatible with or practical anymore on 4” screens. Also, I don’t think iOS 13 has done much good for the old SE with Safari blank screens etc. My SE has served me well, got in on launch day so that’s 4 years now. I might get the new SE for the next 12 months on one of those JB/Telstra deals and then upgrade to the rumoured small version of the iPhone 12 next year (which should be the size in between the old and new SE).

  • shoulda copped the v40

  • +2

Tempting. The 6 is getting a little old.

    • +1

It's 6 years old at this point wouldn't just call it a bit old. Something like the 7 plus is a bit old going on 4 years but at least that still has an a10 fusion and 3gb ram.

      • +1

I might be on my third battery, but it hasn’t let me down!

The touch only models really piss me off.

  • -6

… how much can you buy an iPhone 8 for now?
It's a considerable upgrade to this

    • +1

This is basically an iPhone 11 built into an iPhone 8 chassis. So not sure why you believe the iPhone 8 is an upgrade.

      • This is nothing compared to the 11. This is a good cpu shoved into a phone with no features otherwise. Aside from the cpu, how is this better than the 8? 8 is loaded with features, with only a single generation difference in cpu, which was only a modest update over the 8s

        • What features does the 8 have that the SE(2020) does not?

The A13 chip is 2 generations newer than the A11 in the 8. It allows Apple to use their newer Post processing tech on the camera (portrait mode, newer HDR algorithms, EIS on selfie cam)- and their camera specs on the 2 phones are literally identical. It also means their software update is going to be supported for longer by 2 generations.

The SE has 3 GB of ram to 2 GB on the 8.

The SE has dual Sim and ax support.

All reviewers are reporting that the SE runs like the iPhone 11 unless you are taking photos, where they are keeping the better stuff for the 11 range including night mode (which was also not on the 8)

    • This is quite a decent improvement over an 8.

      • Cpu improvement yes, but the 8 is plenty capable while having a better camera and features.

    • +3

Yea, this has an A13 CPU. The iPhone 8 has an A11 cpu.
      That's 2x extra A's!
      Don't be stupid.

      • … and everything else?

  • +10

As a devout Android user, it's sad to see how many other users are struggling to admit that the SE represents a win for Apple in terms of upper mid range value. Hardware wise this is a smart but for the money. It comes down to whether you like to use iOS or not.

    • Coming from a long line of expensive androids, I think this will be my first apple. I use my phone less and less, and keep them longer and longer.

      • Do you use something else instead?

        • What do you mean

    • +1

The only impressive hardware in this is the SoC. Rest is bottom range garbage.

  • No blue tick from Telstra the 8 has it.

  • Tiny 4.7 inch , no thx

    • +13

seems like someone's not satisfied in the bedroom…..

  • +1

This phone would have been excellent value and Android killer had it been priced equivalent to US price but they had to add Australian tax. This is chance missed to overtake the market.

    • To be fair, it's flagship spec, priced at a hair above pixel a series.

    • Missed chance? Look at the upvotes of this deal and the recently posted JB/TGG SE phone plans.

    • Agree. Especially when you factor in that the reviews have indicated the camera is not great in lowlight and has no night mode and google pixel 3a came out with great camera reviews.

      • The reviews I read said that the rear camera is actually performing really well because of the A13 chip (the camera module itself is identical to the one found on the 8 apparently). But yeah, no night mode.

        • The reviews I've seen so far say the day photos are close to the iphone 11 and videos are great but it really falls away in lowlight.

Its not that hard to find a phone that's going to give you decent day photos though. Its the lowlight that's tricky. For the aud price, its better lowlight performance and that night mode that's really missing.

The phone does have its positives in particular that processer but the things its missing tend to stick out like a sore thumb much more when your paying about 60aud more than the usd price including GST.

          • @barghunt1: I agree and the RRP of the phone feels a tad expensive - for me, I'm planning on getting it on that JB/TTG deal for $199. Considering the normal deal for a 12m contract is just a $400 voucher/phone discount, it brings it down to $599 which I think is a really good price for those who don't care much about bezels.

  • +1

Does the Costco extra warranty apply on this?

  • Damn I just got my SE this afternoon via online Apple Store. Will be a pain in the neck returning it under current circumstances. Have to let it go.

    • +2

You can return it to Apple within 14 days, they even offer a free pickup service.

  • +2

Decent value phone which would become a great pickup at $100-$150 off. (Though I don't think it will be discounted that much until next year) This year a Galaxy s10e would generally be a better phone with better features (most notably excluding limited duration of software support) though especially since it will be on sale from $600-$650 later this year.

    • I have an s10e, the battery didn't get me through a day. Otherwise it's great. I still think the se2 offers much better value long term. S10e only gets another 10 months of os updates

  • -1

I cannot believe anyone thinks this phone and it's cost is a good deal.. apple "egosystem" or not.. are there some people so desperate to own an apple phone they would pay crazy money for this?? Really??

Buy whatever makes you happy, but seriously, no one can tell me this is a good deal. It's just apple making an entry level phone (cpu is excellent though). So people can say, hey look I've got an apple. Doesn't mean it's money well spent.

Apple are the greatest marketing company on planet earth and this is just another example.

    • +2

CPU and camera looks solid. It's either this or about $500 more for next one up from this. It is a brilliant move in my opinion. Just bought one for my son, much prefer my LG V40, but there u go.

      • Yes a brilliant move and awesome marketing!!

You say $500 more for the next one up and I say, how can anyone be so desperate to own an apple.. at the low, middle or high end.. just crazy.

        V40 is excellent value.

        • +1

C'mon man. I used to be so anti-apple … but if you have a Macbook and the phone, they just work so well together. There are a lot of people that don't have the ability to think and Apple serves it all up to them. And I prefer brunettes but accept others will prefer blondes (but ginger lovers are idiots, obviously). ;-)

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: I'm not anti apple at all. I praise just how well they've marketed their products to the masses of followers and the way they've created markets over the years.. iPod, iPhone, iPad, Watches and Air pods. Awesome branding.

I've liked Mac's since the early days they were the go to technology for audio visual design.

Even had some fun building a hackintosh for $200 and it ran MacOS Catalina like a breeze..

Perhaps it's the old price for performance thing and apple just doesn't add up for me.. maybe I'm just a tight arse.. maybe I just don't get what all the fuss is about spending crazy money for every item, to be part of that ecosystem.. when there are so many other better options for far less coin.

            • -1

@TravHall: Now you can finally buy a flagship and see what actual quality and support is!

              • @onlinepred: Really?? Ohh wow, it seems I've been missing a flagship in my life.. I so need the actual quality and support of Apple.. my life is obviously missing something 😂

                • @TravHall: Now you can try and understand rather than judge!

                  • @onlinepred: Haha judge what??

How damn expensive every single product is, that Apple bring to market?

What a laugh.. thanks for that.

                    • +2

@TravHall: Expensive? Did you not see this phone haha? Cheaper than all Android flagships. But seriously, the benefits for me are seen in support. My wife's ip6 battery was lasting about half a day, took into apple, and they replaced the battery on the spot for $50. The phone lasted another year. Mind you it was out of warranty. That phone lasted her almost 5 years. Meanwhile my flagship androids have gone in and out of support, with no real hardware support while out of warranty. I've spent more than double what the iPhone 6 cost replacing my android phones in the years that my wife kept her ip6. Nearly every product, tws buds, smartwatch, are all inferior in a completely objective view. I'm sitting here comparing my galaxy watch active 2 and galaxy iconx buds, drooling over the apple watch, airpods. Truly each to their own though, some people like saving a few bucks and dealing with inferior products, and that is me. I used to like saying my pixel does everything your iPhone does etc, but then it comes and goes while others still keep their iPhones which keep working.

                      • @onlinepred: Wow!! You love apple and a flagship 😅
                        I'm very happy for you.
