  • TGG, JB have the 1TB for $249 and the T5 is similar, too…

I should have grabbed the T5 2TB for 387 last deal but oh well, with the T7 out hopefully there will be good deals.

    • Not really a deal. I had bought the T5 2TB for $319.20 during the Bing Lee 20% eBay sale back in Dec 2019 i.e. $399 less 20% off. I'd suggest wait for a better sale if after the 2T version.

      • I regret missing that one… I thought at the time it will go lower because of the new T7, lol… nowhere near that low since

    I got the 1TB in Nov 2018 for $237.

And it’s still similar price after 1.5 years hmmmm

    • +5

$ was much better back then though. Good prices around at Black Friday time.

These are great to use as external storage for current gaming consoles, it also provides a benefit that they could be used on the next gaming console too to store this generation of games on it.

So, use it now to install some PS4 games to it and have reduced loading times, then when the PS5 comes along, plus this in and you can install PS4 games to it. You'll be able to keep the small super-fast internal SSD for PS5 games.

    • Agree 100%. I use mine on my Switch for storing/launching game backups (XCI format) and comparable in performance to the on-board eMMC for eShop titles and only marginally slower than the HybridFlash chips on the original game carts.

    • Given the series X will use proprietary storage, it probably pays to wait till the PS5 is out incase non nvme options aren't as favourable.

      • +1

I think they'll allow for expandable usb. Xbox did it long before sony but you could DIY upgrade the internal PS4 drive.

I'd be tempted to use a firecuda if i get one of next gen consoles

      • +1

The PS5 and XBox Series X will both support external USB 3.2 storage that can be used to install non-PS5 and Series X titles.

This is where it will be handy because the current consoles cannot fully utilise the performance of even the slower SSDs. When used on the next consoles old games won't be using up any of the limited inbuilt super-fast SSDs. Hopefully, older games on the newer consoles will be able to benefit more so from the speeds of external SSDs, but we will see.

        • It's been announced MS is using their own storage options….
          https://www.ccn.com/next-gen-xbox-series-x-reveals-its-most-…

Actualy, just reading that, that's only for the new titles… weird.

I did use a SSD with the X and while it's better, it's nowhere near what it could be as you said.

          • +1

@scuderiarmani: Yeah, they'll have both options available. Those superfast memory cards and external USB storage, however, Series X titles have to be installed on those memory cards.

You would be much better off buying a 2tb BX500 drive for $290 and a usb 3 enclosure for about $20.

The read speed of even the cheap BX series is around 500mb/s, far beyond what usb 3 can handle

Officeworks is $140, so price beat by 5%…!

    • Wonder if it is the same price on the education store

      • +2

Yes it is. The 1TB T5 is 254 so if you have a $50 off coupon it would work out to $204.xx at edu store

        • Think you need to exceed $250 purchase to qualify to apply the voucher.

          • +1

@0jay: Yes T5 is 254 so coupon should apply.

        • It was $99 on eBay about 6 months ago

          • @Krogers: Lucky those who got it. I got the Kogan deal for $56 (500 GB)

When you buy a 500GB T5 for $250 back in Oct 2018. Feels bad man.

  • +1

Same price at JB HiFi, The Good Guys and Bing Lee: https://pricehipster.com/?q=Samsung%20T5%201tb

    • It's $249 at good guys, jb hifi and Bing Lee. It's $1 cheaper at Harvey Norman..

In any case better to get OW to price beat Harvey Norman anyway.

  • Dammit I bought a 500gb for $140 a fortnight ago!

Been using quarantine as an opportunity to do lots of data backup. Highly recommend this little hard drive, has been performing amazingly. Really high quality cables with it too.

    • +1

This is unlabled evo m2 drive inside anyways so this cause is slightly cheaper by 10-20 lol

  • binglee cheaper

    • +1

      Only the 250GB. It's $99.

Even better to get OW to price beat that.

      • They don't stock the 250gb. Click through shows discontinued.

  • Does anyone know whether using this for external storage on a Mac for the Photos library will bring any noticeable improvement in speed over a spinning HDD? I can't seem to find much about that specific use case online.

    • +2

It'll absolutely be massively faster than a mechanical drive.

    • +1

4.9x faster if you read their specs. And if your pc is of good spec, up To 540mbs…

I won't buy another HDD ever, no need too.

      • +1

thanks. I just want to make sure the bottleneck isn't somewhere besides the external HDD. hence making upgrading virtually pointless.
