Impoving sound quality in my car

Hi guys,

I'm driving a 2004 Mazda 3 maxx hatch at the moment and i'm using stock car speakers. I can tell easily that the sound quality isn't as good as my cousin's one (She has the luxury version of the Mazda 3 - the sp23 and it comes with bose stock speakers).

I just wanted to know, what would i need to buy to improve the sound quality of the car?

  • Speakers?
  • With amplifiers and subwoofers - i don't really want to reduce any more free space in my boot, as a hatch it's very limited already.

I saw a user post this deal:

It definitely looks like a bargain, I'm tempted to purchase these cheap sony speakers first and if i'm not satisfied i'll go find different ones.. but can anyone recommend me some speakers that are under $200 for reasonable sound quality? Also…is there anything else besides speakers, subwoofers or amplifiers that i can add to improve the sound quality?

  • I don't think that the deal you're mentioning will give you any satisfaction.

What speakers size does your car require?
What player and power do you have?
Do you want coaxial speakers or will you be able to mount component speakers?
What is you budget and your expectations?

  • +1

Get door and cavity insulation. I bet your speakers are fine - door deadening and maybe an EQ are what you need.

  • prob better off asking in mazda forums, eg: ozmazda.com

  • The speakers are what you need to change. There is NOTHING cheaper or nastier than low-end standard OEM car speakers.

The head unit will be fine - even a new one won't really change the sound quality. An amp would change the sound, only the loudness. The NUMBER ONE thing that affects sound quality if the speakers - the ones that you have are probably only single-cone, and don't even have a tweeter!

When buying, be cautious of the Speaker Efficiency. If they are under 90db/W you may need an amp to get them pumping. What I used to do is find the most efficient high-end speakers I could find, and then just use the standard head unit.

    • Thank you =) I just found some speakers on ozbargain at JBHIFI just then! Will be purchasing. Will let you know how the sound quality is!!

    • Just in case somebody was wondering:

      It was these:
