    • I’ve got this. Nice little starter audio kit for a small - medium bedroom. Bass is average but can’t complain for the price

    • whats the subwoofer output

  • Tempted.. i have a pioneer vsx 524 and its fine except the arc sucks… wonder how this would be

    • +1

I have a Yamaha, and the ARC sucks too.
I wish they had manual over-ride, instead of just hoping the auto-detect always works.
ARC seems to be a dirty hack on a protocol which was never intended to be bi-directional.
It works most of the time, once you've figured out the quirks, but still annoying.

      • Can now confirm the eARC ont his model still sucks too.

  • Anyone know if this can decode Atmos/DTSX? (Or Dolby TrueHD/DTS HD MA for that matter)

    • +4

      Doesn't look like it:

Thanks - I couldn't find that on the Amazon page..

Dolby Atmos and DTS-X are just an extension of TrueHD and DTS-HD MA, which include the additional spacial objects. Useless on a 5.1 receiver so I guess my question really should have been is if it supports TrueHD or DTS-HD MA

    • heh beaten above :)

  • +4

Same spec as the Yamaha RX-V485 AV Receiver according to CustomHT Solutions

    • +1

Thanks, I'm more used to that naming convention. Pretty good receiver, probably one of the best entry level ones you can/should buy.

  • I have the VSX-522 and am looking to upgrade (along with a new television). Any downsides to this receiver? The website claims eARC via firmware update so I assume it supports HDMI 2.1?

    • Do a search for "avsforum Yamaha RX-V485"

Should be a heap of information on there, it's my go to for anything a/v related (especially receivers and projectors)

      • +1

Okay it looks like it supports eARC but is just HDMI 2.0.

Are there any issues with connecting HDMI 2.1 devices together (source & TV) and supplying the audio over eARC/HDMI 2.0 to the receiver?

Trying to avoid buying something which is already out of date and it's a tricky question to Google.

  • That's more like a standard price for this starter Yammy amp.

Anyone looking can also keep an eye on tge manufacturer refurbs from excelhifi - comes with warranty and direct manufacturer refurbs.

    https://www.excelhifi.com.au/audio-visual-receivers/

    Currently the RXV485 for $379.

    • +2

This is the same model as RXV485. Why would you pay $20 more for a refurbished unit?

      • +1

That was just an example. Not sure but Yamaha markets HTR and RXV lines differently. This particular model sounds very similar to 485 but generally RXV and Aventage are considered better built. But you are right about 485 being almost identical.

I am not sure of the internals, owners of this unit might shed more light.

My suggestion was for someone on the lines is not in a hurry t o keep a lookout for refurbs AND brand new units for much better specs and power handling. Like RXV 1085, 2085 or higher.

        • +2

The RXV and HTR lines are typically identical internally. They get the same firmware updates, manuals are the same and so on.

Yamaha typically brings in the two identical models for a couple of reasons.

          1) To package them with speakers in a kit.
          2) To sell off in bulk lots to specific retailers, in order to get the brand in front of more people.

I don’t think I can remember a higher model than an equivalent RX-V6– in the HTR range, and occasionally you’ll get a HTR-2— model that’s stripped down beyond the RX-V3– for really entry level speaker packs. You don’t get slim models or DAB+ models either (well, not so far).

RX-A (Aventage) models have better build quality, sometimes have better or upgraded components, come with a fifth leg for stability (hmm, yeah), and upgraded warranties (RX-V typically 2yrs, RX-A typically 4 with first year replacement warranty rather than return-to-base). They’re only sold through some retailers, not through any Yamaha dealer.

And the CX/MX pre/power-amp components are even more high end, and are sold through even fewer retailers.

  • +2

Does it have Band 28 though??

    • +1

      Only Jazz Band 28

  • Great buy. I have an older Yamaha 673 works brilliantly and good HDMI integration with chromecast

  • which sites do people look at for hi-fi reviews or does anyone have any recommendations for a medium-sized theatre room.
Would a budget of $1500-$2,000 be enough for a 7.1 system package?

Are rear channels pretty much wireless now to save running cables?

    Thanks

    • If you want brand new setup then people typically spend more. But sticking to your budget.. well almost. You can lool at the Yamaha NS 555 5.1 package and 7.2 AVR of choice.
If you want to get ATMOS in future better to get an amp that supports it and enough power, etc. Spend more more features;)

Negotiate with dealers for a good deal. Do not take advertised sale prices as the final price.

Have a look at these. Bought them myself.

Yamaha NS 555 5.1 pack - add on in ceiling 2 or 4 atmos speakers later

      Yamaha RXV 1085. 7.2 AVR

if you are in Melbourne speak with Melbourne HiFi or Eastwood HiFi in sydney great people to deal with. Ask for a deal and suggestions.

      • I got it for $2250 including speaker cables and shipping.

You can break this set up to just the 5.1 without atmos.

        https://www.melbournehifi.com.au/collections/home-theatre-pa…

Or buy speakers and amp separately. Denons are food but expensive in Aus.

      • Ha good ol' Eastwood HiFi. I remember when they were in Eastwood - in the shopping centre with Woolworths - must be about 40 years ago. Still going strong. Good for them.

  • +1

    Thanks OP.
I was looking for RX-V485 (which is close to $600 at the moment) but this one is the same hardware, even firmware updates.

Could be worth mentioning that it supports 4k and HDR 10

  • Whats the smallest 5.1 av receiver ?
I am looking for one for my PC but can't find one that is small enough to chuck it on my desk and not look ridiculous

  • +1

Review seems to suggest it doesn't have Google cast support. But if I plug in a Chromecast into one of the HDMI ports, doesn't that solve the problem?

    • +1

      Yes

      • +1

Great thanks for your help. I just bought one!

  • complete side question.

My projector only has 2 hdmi inputs, no Arc or eArc, along with headphone and audio outputs.
Does this mean there's no point trying to hook up an Atmos audio setup for it?

    • You use eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) to connect your TV to AVR usually to pass the audio back to AVR.

For Atmos, you will need an AVR which decodes Dolby Atmos and have physical spacial speakers in-ceiling (or Atmos enabled ones which bounce back audio from ceiling back to you).

      AND

Actual Atmos content ofcourse, typically a blue-ray player connected to your AVR. I doubt if Netflix,Prime has Atmos though, someone please correct me if I am wrong.

    • +1

I recommend that your Projector should be used only for HDMI input(s), to project video out from your receiver's output HDMI (Main). I wouldn't bother with its internal speakers & audio connections.
      - Atmos is only a sound codec, therefore the receiver will handle the sound to the speakers.
      - You need a compatible Atmos speaker system, source (video/Bluray) and a receiver (7.2 and up)
      - You can watch TV through your projector however you need a TV Tuner such as Humax etc.(support at least 1080p upscale)
      - The TV tuner will be connected to one of your AV receiver HDMI inputs.
      - You can use the AV receiver as an HDMI switch for your other devices, PS4, XB1, Bluray player etc… (depending on the amount inputs on your receiver)
      - If you want to watch 4K on your projector, the projector has be compatible, HDCP2.2, HDR10. 2160p60 faux or native etc (you don't need 4K for Atmos)
      - HDMI cables have to support HDMI 2.0 or above. ~ 18GBps (4K)
      Cheers

      • thanks heaps!

Looks like I'm back in the market for an audio upgrade.
Now to work out where to start with that :)

        • If you already have decent speakers then you can start with the AV receiver.
If not, then look for a 7.1/7.2 HT package that supports Atmos.
          Cheers

What is the make and model number of your projector?

          • @vinni9284: vankyo v600

Really cheap projector but surprisingly effective.
Was bought for just an temporary outdoor cinema party but turns out to be quite a nice upgrade for the lounge too.

  • I am currently running a Pioneer VSX-D714 and am looking to upgrade. One feature I use regularly is the Speak A+B feature to play music in the backyard.
Is anyone able to advise if this has a similar feature? If not what models do?

  • Any good place to get a 5.1 / 7.1 speaker pack? Need something for the parents to go with their V681

  • Thanks OP, receiver just died this week, so good timing!

  • Thanks OP, bought one. I got 4 speakers(Yamaha NS-333), came installed with the place I moved in a week ago. Hopefully it will work with them.

  • Thanks OP, bought one

  • Perfect timing, picked one up to go with new 65" Panny GX1000, replacing older Yammy RX-673.
