I guess it’s worthy to go and have a look at all the franchises…however, in my opinion (and doesn’t constitute financial advice), most franchises end up with the franchisee losing money; especially in the retail food and drinks sector.

Yes the first question would be, How did you help your franchisees during the current crisis.

Then, did you offer a discount rate on franchise fees?

The only thing the master franchiser is interested is how to extract as much from you as possible with the least amount of risk.

This is the sad reality. So many mum and dad investors looking for a better lifestyle have been screwed over (looking at you retail food group/Nando's/grilld).

If you want to start a cafe/food business, ask yourself what the benefit of buying an established brans has and weigh it up against the costs associated. I would hazard a guess and say that the brand cache for smaller franchises (Michelle's patisserie etc.) isn't worth squat. Combine that with ridiculous requirements to order stock through suppliers with inflated costs and it makes it very hard to come out on top.

Then they force you to renovate and they deal with rent negotiations on your behalf themselves , at end of it all you get screwed over and they take over or forced to sell your store for much lower then you put it. 7/11 makes like 10-15% of profits in the buying and selling franchise fee's ALONE!

It's all a massive scam. SO MANY heartache stories from battling families that never even had money to pay themselves and loose it all at the end.

Franchises work if you are a big investment group as you'll have power and lawyers, otherwise for a normal Aussie they are one of worst things to get into.

        • Nando's have been accused of the same (forcing refurbishments that push the franchise owner to sell at a loss). It's completely heartless.

Franchising needs a royal commission. Too many shonks.
