can't wait to break into 10,000 courses with 0 viewed.

    • is that a lofty goal or are you excelling at this? I'm only 0 from 741.

I'd really like to do some courses if I could find some time… I'm wondering if I stopped enrolling in courses and downloading games and ebooks I might be able to.

I recently spoke to a guy who was doing he's masters in electrical science, and he said he absolutely hates doing it online, party because explaining he's hand writing over video call is a nightmare, but cannot manage to do the last year's of university due to the outbreak, so yeah no idea how these courses would help anyone.

Coming from he's point of view.

So are any of these courses really worth the time and effort in a job interview?

Can you use them as credit?

Some of these courses are done quite well, especially the ones which has high number of students and rating. They have these students/ratings obviously for a reason

      • especially the ones which has high number of students and rating

Some of these will use a coupon code and a clickfarm to inflate their numbers

        • Yeah you are right, normally these ones are newer courses and there are fewer students enrolled. If you look at the ones with more students and ratings, these numbers do tell a story.

If you can't explain what you've learned from the courses in a straight forward way, then probably not worth mentioning. If you can talk at length what you've learned then I bet it would impress for a job where they don't expect you to retain information about advanced Excel macros or whatever, or be able to talk about database tables casually, or whatever.

You mean sell your self self short with no guarantee.

        Fair enough.

    • Are these video training? If so, I don't know why I'm downloading them. My preferred learning is, in order:
      * On the job - with someone who knows what they're doing to mentor
      * From a textbook - that is specific to what I need - I don't know enough to pick what is relevant
      * Classroom - just an extra step from textbook - I'll be writing everything down myself - useful if teacher can distinguish what is relevant and what isn't
      * Video. I started a video-based PM course some years ago - paid $2000 for it (employer was supposed to reimburse but didn't finish course while I was there)

Video training would have to be awfully well done for me to get anything from it. I groan just thinking about that PM course that I really need to get back into.

      • Video can be good or can be bad. It's good when they use short videos to demo technique but the bulk of learning is done through text with a summary video at the middle & end of each chapter. This is how they taught me CCNA at tafe through the CISCO site.

I too find it hard to learn off a bunch of 2hr videos with no text material provided except for slides in the video, have to constantly pause it and try to perform what I saw then watch again and rewind/rewatch segment after segment gets tiring very quickly.
