I just switched over myself as i figured offset from no premium for 6 weeks will bring down my annual premium to sweeten this deal even more.

The quote I got from Medibank was lower than my existing health insurance which is surprising because previously whenever I tried no one could beat them on premium prices.

Guess It pays you back to reevaluate.

    • Have you made the claim in the past with Bupa? There is a lifetime limit for Ortho and depending on how much you have accumulate. Eg. With my cover, $500 per year, max $3000. Thus to claim the full amount, you need to do the ortho at 6th year of membership.

      • Hence why I went into the store to ask for my claimable amount. I've used some of my lifetime limits hence why I went into the store. They said the entire amount. Anyways I transferred from Bupa with 4 years, with Medicare before that. So I haven't missed a day of private insurance with premiums for like 10-15 years.

  • Thoughts on getting this for 6 weeks just for some dental work? Im due for a clean/checkup which usually costs about 200-300, and got some side sport niggles (physio). Would probably cancel after.

Says you must maintain direct debit for 30 days to receive free 6 weeks. So thats 2x fortnightly payments - about 2x$46. You can then claim back 60% of your extras. Wonder if you end up winning hmmm

    • You would save money getting a cleanup on Groupon or a discount medical clinic.

Open up a policy with AHM, choose the best extra policy as this has no wait periods for dental. Close account following your dental work.

    • This is the reason why private health insurance is expensive! You shouldn't encourage people to do this.

      • Hi Hoarder - when i just chatted AHM asking about policies / wait times the agent followed up after stating they have no wait times for dental work with "that its great with AHM because if you want to change your cover or decide its not for you theirs no lock in contracts.". So they are using that as a selling point. Feel free to correct me if were doing something wrong/unethical here ?

Do people just get on these promos just like they change their mobile providers for good deals every now and then?

Save your money, private health is a scam.

Had a decent cover for almost 8 years, spending more than 25k… I now have quit PHI… as I realised that I am wasting my hard earned money getting nothing out of it other than optical…

    • That's the thing with insurance though… You don't need it until you need it.

I had a terrible experience with Medibank and would advise you to shop around (or avoid PHI altogether).

I was sold a misleading plan that did not cover me for what I needed due to an update of their plans terms and conditions. I said was happy to backpay the extra amount if it meant they could waive the waiting period as it wasn't my fault. I went thru their customer complaints team and got declined. I escalated it to a higher complaints department and got declined again. They case manager was very defensive and wasn't interested in listening to the issue.

When I ran the numbers on PHI for pure tax avoidance (I've only been to the doctor once or twice in the last decade), I found that health.com.au provided the cheapest coverage.

I think HIF is still the cheapest.

    • Should at least get an annual or 6 monthly FBC and all related to routine health summary blood work.

      Dental check-ups every 6-12 months.

Optical check-ups every 1-2 years dependent on how you feel about your eyesight between visits.

      Isn't Westfund Limited provide cheapest?

  • I had cover for 10 years, it was costing me $150 a month and I basically used it for Dental only and it pays itself off. I stopped now for a few months, because I felt like it was money down the drain but I am thinking of joining again esp if I can find a good sign up bonus with no lock in contracts.
